So, should Blair get a US-style private plane to fly one?  Personally, I think that leaders should have to travel like the rest of us because it sends out the wrong message when you "idolise" a person and give them luxeries the rest of us can't have.

Yet another waste of my money.
The current arrangement they have of a plane on lease and then charter flights for Tony/Lizzy and staff works out at nearly £1.5million cheaper than this shit. Just another example of widening the gulf between the leaders and the followers.(Prescott's 3 Jags, country estate etc)  Personally I think the queen should pay for her own flights around her many homes in the UK, or get a fuckin bus. If she is on official state business then fair enough. What does she do anyway.........that racist husband of hers has done the UK more bad than good over the years. Thats probably why you don't see much of him these days. Think father Jack from Father Ted, lol.

I believe security issues are part of the reason behind having that sort of plane.

Looks like he will be getting a 777 or A330/A340 wide-bodied aircraft. Unless it is kitted out with the kind of electronics that AF1 has

On September 11th, the president's plane showed that it was much more than an executive jet -- it became a mobile bunker when all ground positions seemed vulnerable to attack.
...It would be a waste of money.

Go the way of Australia. Our PM flies in a RAAF BBJ (Boeing Business Jet).

I think it would be kinda cool if Prime Ministers and Presidents had 'Sub Force One' personal submarines for scooting around the world. It would be interesting to see all the dignitaries line up in the harbour as the Presidential submarine surfaced and out climbed the President.

As for this mode of transportation serving to expand the gulf between the people and leadership, I'd have to disagree.  Air Force One is a HIGHLY modified airframe which serves as a secure platform to transport the president.  Security would be greatly compromised if he relied on traditional flights, or even charter flights.  This would open the door to more easily allow tampering with the plane or its crew.  Beyond the changes which are public to the 747 airframe in Air Force One, I have to believe there are even more modifications kept from public knowledge which serve to provide more defensive (if not offensive) capabilities.

To get back to the thread, I don't see why Blair wouldn't benefit from this.  I don't know what the current climate is on the isles, but if it's anything like it's portrayed stateside, it seems like a weak point.  CameronPoe would obviously be in a better position than I to comment on that.

And Cameron, why are you so pissed off in all your photos???

I'm just not a big fan of smiling. I can't put on false smiles so I just stick with my serious face for photos.

The threat posed to Blair from us Irish is now extremely minimal btw.  Although I wouldn't suggest he go for a stroll down O'Connell Street or anything!!

President Bush doing a cartwheel  and a few backsprings off of the sub onto the pier would be awesome.

LOL.

Canada's own Stephen Harper resides in a permanently-cloaked space station in orbit 10 miles above the equator.

Decked out with an array of state-of-the-art environmental weapons -- such as tsunami- and hurricane-generators, as well as more conventional options, such as the zOMGw00tP3N372470|2 global remote keylogger and of course, the widely revered teh nuclear grizzlystrike capability -- the Canadis™ is the least any self-respecting smarmy pseudo-presidential pretender should afford himself in the name of his people.

Tell Tony Blair he can have one if he takes back those dodgy subs the UK sold us a few years back...  He thinks of himself as quite "presidential", no?

With the UK's involvement in the middle east, Blair is more of a target and thus needs more security.
