A virus named Brave Sentry has completley destroyed my PC (not my BF2 one thank God). I can't run any applications....what do I do? I tried deleting it through control pannel, won't work, the task manager is disabled. I am teh sad. What the balls should I do?!

Reboot and run virus scans in safe mode FTW

Looks like it's spyware. Do you use Microsoft's Defender? I'd recomend getting it or Spy Sweeper or Ad-Aware or something like that. They should be able to get rid of it for you.

I'm not actually familiar with this one (but it's based off an older one (spy sheriff), which I have cleaned up.

I did a little googling and ran across this, as well as reading of others that this process worked for:

Good luck!

Hey, can you tell me how to do system restore? or is it too late. I have had the virus for like 1.5 days now.

Are you able to gain access to the start menu? If you do, go towards All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and System Restore. Then go the Restore my Computer to ths Point or some rubbish like that and then set back to the earliest point Windows made by itself (assuming you didn't create you own point) and hope it works. Otherwise, reinstall all of Windows.

System Restore is pretty straightforward. If your computer is store bought (major manufacturer), there will be a CD labeled "System Restore."  Pop it in, and follow the instructions. IDK if that will work or not, my best guess is that it should.

HOWEVER:

If you want to reformat manually, insert your Windows CD. Go into your BIOS by pressing a specific f-key, or [DELETE] during bootup.

Go to something like "ADVANCED CMOS SETTINGS"  (this may be different for different computers, you'll have to look around in your BIOS to find the right menu. )

Select "BOOT DEVICE PRIORITY"
Tell your computer to boot from CD drive first, and tell your BIOS to "SAVE CHANGES" Your system will then restart, and will automatically boot from your Windows CD, allowing for you to reformat your drive. If possible try to back up essential files before performing the reformat. While technically it does not wipe your drive clean,  it will make your old files inaccessible to the new install of Windows, thereby removing the virus.

Hope this helps.

system restore wont help, you need to delete the file on your computer. Eitehr virus scan or a spyware cleaner.do a search on www.symantec.com put in the name of the virus you think u have they will tell you how to resolve the issue. Might be as simple as d/l a virus removal toll they offer.

Yeah, I have tried doing a proper fix, but the computer can barley run the internet because it has become so slow. When I try to d/l an anti-virus program the file can barley download, half the time it just freezes.

find a friend at a university, most have a school download site that provides tools you usually have to pay for, ie norton / mcaffee, etc.  Failing that, spybot-search and destroy and ad aware are two tools I use regularly.  Just d/l them on another box and burn it to a CD.

This looks like its a variation of Spyaxe, a nasty piece of malware that did the rounds 3-4 months ago. A/V progs will be completely inneffective (its not a virus ). You realy need to run Smitrem, its specifically designed to deal with this family of infections. smitrem also recommend using ewido to clear up other bits of spyware that gets imported with the Spyaxe trojan.
You may not like the sound of this, but Norton/McAfee/AVG will do absolutely nothing to clear this up, ditto Spybot/Ad-Aware.

http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/  This is the Smitrem download page, good luck.

I see InnerMonkey recommended the same thing, sry didnt notice, +1 to him.

I had a nasty lil fucker of a Spyware. Put an icon in the taskbar that kept reporting "You have a Virus - click here to remove it". When you clicked on the Icon, it brought up a webpage that then started all sorts of shit - adware mostly and fucked with my web browser. Nortons couldnt touch it (and niether could AdAware), and you couldnt remove the exe from the Task Manager. In the end I had to reinstall XP

Here is a neat little tool (FREE).

It's like CTRL-ALT-DEL / aplications.  Shows you what you are running.  However it tells you everything about the thread/process.

You can find out what is running (The spyware) where it is, what dll.s it is using, etc.  Then you kill the process (Right click on it) and start deleting.

Saved me a few times and is very easy to use.

Also good for shuting down things before playing bf2.  Give it a shot.  Use it in safe mode.

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep very nice Stealth. I think I will be using it to track down those pesky malware .exe's that just wont die
