In another thread (forget which) a conversation started over whether China was Communist, and whether Taiwan is a part of China.  So as not to further derail that thread, I've started this one!  So, opening up with Taiwan:

This website, which is currently down but I believe to be that of the Taiwanese government, claims that Taiwan has diplomatic relations with 27 countries according to the Google blurb (second from the top - it was working last night, but the server appears to be down, must be Made in China ).  According to Wikipedia it only has 25, but the content of the list is mostly the same (i.e. small/unimportant nations).  I trust the the Taiwanese government website is more accurate, hopefully it will be up again soon.  With such little recognition, I don't see how it can be considered an independent state.  Further, the UN views continuity: notice they don't list the ROC or PRC, but rather China.  So far as the UN is concerned, China joined in 1945, and the government changed in 1971 (?).

Thoughts?

The USA don't recognize Taiwan's existence as a sovereign nation.

I'm not entirely sure of this, but AFAIK they are one nation, and the dispute surrounds which of the two governments is the legitimate government of China.

Uh, no.  The real government of China was pretty certainly resolved when the Commies booted the Nationalists all the way to Formosa.  After that, however, Mao chose to consolidate the mainland rather than push on and finish Chiang Kai Shek once and for all.  Taiwan now claims independence, however China argues that they are a part of China.  The US argues that they are a part of China but if China tells them how to run their government the US will back Taiwan (pretty arrogant of the US, if you ask me).

Oh, well if wikipedia says it it must be true, despite the fact that neither the USSR nor the PRC have stuck to Communist principles when it didn't suit them.
Funny how you criticize wikipedia and then use it yourself in this thread as a source.

We should all hope that Taiwan stays stable, regardless.  Just remember that somewhere in the area of 95-98% of the hardware in your computer is manufactured there.

damn straight.

well pretty much my country is split, half wants to go to china half wants to be independace. but i believe that taiwan is already independent since that im not a commie yet and we have freedom of speech and i can critisize the gov w/out getting arrested. now i would love china to give us like a 2 system. what bubbalo said was true about mao not defeating the nationalists. but during the 60s mainland china was weak and taiwan could have taken it back, but then chiang kai shek being an idiot as always wants to wait and make taiwan grow stronger and defeat china. that wait has made china stronger. well taiwan was never incorperated w/ the mainland since we have never signed anything. ppl just want to follow the larger country since they can provide better bussiness...

It would be great if TSMCs fabs shut down, I'd be rich.  Go get 'em China, they're laughin' at you.  Then payback Japan for that whole cutting off your heads thing during WWII.  Just leave Korea alone, I need parts for my car

Hell, If taiwan wants to go Commie, let 'em go commie.  What's a few million more commie chineese in the world.

but the point is we dont wanna be commies its just china wants us to join the "motherland". china considers itself the mother and taiwan the child, what mother doesnt want their child to be independant?

But i would love taiwan to be part of japan, sad that they left after WW2 it was a good colonization if u followed their laws

If taiwan remains stable ill be fine w/ that but if they force us to join china (invade which is possible) ill be on a plane to australia

Your aggressive attitude against every american gets a bit boring... Sorry to say. At one point I thought you actually had something to say. Now that've read this forum for a while, I must take it back.

I used it as a backup because the other source was down at the time of posting.  You'll note that I said it was more likely 27 (the alternate figure) than 25 (the Wikipedia figure).  Further, the number of countries with official diplomatic relations with Taiwan is simply a matter of who says they have them, whereas whether a country is Communist (as was the issue of debate there) comes down to a matter of what you believe is necessary to truly be a Communist state.  If he had said "According to Wikipedia and backed up by Harvard", I would have not criticised him.

I'm aggressive towards people who make pointless comments, and don't elaborate on why.

Palestine isn't independent, and their laws don't necessarily match up with Israel.  Being a recognised state isn't about how different you are from other areas of your......uh........place (from now on I'm going to refer to China/Taiwan as place instead of country, given that whether they are one is a debate).  It's about being the one who makes foreign policy decisions, and whether other nations recognise you as being a nation.  I could secede from Australia tomorrow, doesn't make me an independent nation.

cyborg_ninja-117 wrote:

I highly doubt that, given that the Nationalists had control of almost the whole country at one stage and then got their asses handed to them.

Taiwan's perception of it's independence could be quite different to the actual state of affairs.

well in the 60's communist china was very weak economically and their ppl were starving, but taiwan could of made a strike to take the mainland. well taiwan isnt communist since we have our own government, president, laws etc. China just wants to take taiwan coz we have hi-tech computer stuff and good economy that can help china. if we are a shit country and in large debt do u think china wants taiwan? its all about money. if china wasnt that powerful today do u think nations would go w/ chinas side?

Uh.....then how did you lose it in the first place?

cyborg_ninja-117 wrote:

A Communist nation can be run by a president, seen as how Communism is an economic system.  And besides, China isn't Communist.

Probably true (I don't know enough about the relationship to be certain, it may just be China wanting to throw it's weight around and look big), but why they argue it is irrelevant to whether it's true.
