Every time I try to start Battlefield 2, it briefly shows a splash screen with the Battlefield 2 logo and then the screen goes black for a second before crashing to the desktop. I can't aunch BF2 out of xfire at all.

I hear this is a pretty common problem. Anyone know the fix?

Someone i work with had the same issue, they completly uninstalled BF and then reinstalled but when patching used the 1.3 Full rather than mini one...

that resolved it for them..

Did you just buy a new monitor? delete your video.con file from your battlefield 2 profile folder in my documents..

I'm having the same problem, fresh install, all drivers and direct-x 9.0c updated, did the full patch install, still no luck. Just got the game, so it has never run before, had the same problem with 1.0 and 1.3 patch.

Running a 3.2 Ghz P4, 128 Meg ATI vid card, 640 megs of ram, 80 gig HD, Windows XP Home

It's an HP pavilion zv5330us laptop

kind of run out of ideas for what to try next

Sounds like your ingame settings are set to high and your graphics card cant handleit. But you can try this

Problem - Crash to Desktop on starting Battlefield 2
Cause - Several Possible Causes
Fix - There is no fix known to work for everyone, merely a list of possible things to try to resolve the issue;

1. Rename the Movies folder in your Battlefield 2\mods\bf2 folder to Movies2, to skip the start up Movies which can be the cause of the Problem.

2. Move your Battlefield 2 folder in My documents and put it on your desktop. When loading BF2 Again it should force it to create a new one using default settings.

3. Check you have no software forcing a set refresh rate, if you do disable it.

4. If on a AGP card, try running at 4x speed instead of 8x speed. I believe ATI users can change this in there ATI control panel, or use the ATI panel in display settings. You can access display settings by right clicking on your desktop, then clicking properties.
For Nvidia users it may be necessary to set it in the bios.
By doing this the loss of FPS is very small, but you can significantly improve the systems stability

5. Check on your graphic card control panel that everything is set to application controlled to see if it helps.

6. Re-Install the latest version of Directx from the Microsoft Website http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.mspx

7. Use Driver Cleaner to erase your old Graphic Card drivers, then update to a more recent or stable version of graphic card drivers for your graphic card.

Problem - Crash to Desktop on Joining a online Server.
Cause - No CDKEY in Registry / Uninstalling BF1942 on a system that has BF2 on it.
Fix - If you have the Uninstalling BF1942 issue, skip this bit and read the part below.
Use battlefield2_code.exe to re-enter your CDKEY, this can be located in the support folder of where you installed battlefield 2 on your Hard-Drive.
After re-entering your CDKEY you must then reapply the latest patch in order for it to be encrypted into the registry.
This Program can also be used. ftp://ftp.ea-europe.com/UK_Support/EAGA … yCheck.exe

If you have the Uninstalling BF1942 issue, read on from here.

You must remove BF2 manually and reinstall it. Here's how: (modified slightly from EA's instructions to preserve settings/config):

Save your settings/configs:
* Open My Documents, rename "Battlefield 2" folder to "Battlefield 2 previous"

Delete the game files:
* Find your installation of Battlefield 2 (default: c:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2) and delete it.

Remove registry entries:
1. Click on the Start button.
2. Click on Run.
3. Type regedit in the text field.
4. Click File and then choose Export.
5. Name the file Backup and make sure the Export Range is set to All.
6. Click Save; you will now be returned to the Registry Editor window.
7. Click the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
8. Click the plus sign next to Software.
9. Click the plus sign next to DICE.
10. Right-click on the Battlefield 2 folder and choose Delete.
11. Click the plus sign next to Electronic Arts.
12. Right-click and choose Delete on any Battlefield 2 folders.
13. Click the plus sign next to Microsoft.
14. Click the plus sign next to Windows.
15. Click the plus sign next to CurrentVersion.
16. Click the plus sign next to Uninstall.
17. Right-click on the key named {04858915-9F49-4B2A-AED4-DC49A7DE6A7B} and choose Delete.
18. A Confirm Key Delete window will appear, choose Yes.
19. Close the WindowsRegistry Editor.

Battlefield 2 is now completely removed from your system.

Re-installation:
1. Reinstall Battlefield 2
2. Apply latest patch
3. Open My Documents, Rename "Battlefield 2" folder to "Battlefield 2 old" (this is the freshly installed settings directory which you may want to keep just in case).
4. Rename "Battlefield 2 previous" (your settings before BF2 stopped working) to "Battlefield 2"

Peace Boris

still no luck =/

couldn't find anything that specificly said it lowered from 8x to 4x, but I did lower the hardware accelleration which said it should solve severe direct-x problems

other than that, the only thing I can think of, is because it's an ATI 9000 card, it limits the refresh rate to 60 hz, and I'm not sure how to change that

thanks much though Boris

ok I finally narrowed down the problem, yes it is the video card.

after running the 'EAsy Info' thing, it comes up saying that it my video hardware AND driver -may- not be compatible.

As far as I know, I have it updated as far as possible, but any help would be much appreciated.

Here's the info:

Display Device:  ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000/9100 IGP

Display Driver:  6.14.10.6436

both of those pop up with the question mark next to them signaling they may not be compatible, I also get the same thing for my sound drivers, but haven't spent much time on that yet.

mobility Radeon is the problem for sure... there is a file out there that allows people to run the game in ultra- low settings, for cards that are not supported by the game, but this is a crap shoot at best... once your in a game, you will be the biggest target because your settings will still cause you lag.

I hate to say it, but this may not be the right game for you to play... I assume your on a laptop? is the video upgradable on that model? That is the questions you need to start asking.

Good luck!

Ghetto Desktop.... I'm picturing a lot of bling, with a gullwing case lid that automatically opens, and the whole thing is lowered into the desk.

Or it's just covered in bad band flyers and Graffiti. Probably some Garbage stuck in the corners... lol

his is better than mine cause his has blue neon lights...

right?

yeah...

(I was calling it ghetto for several reasons, one of them being the fan he had held up over the video card cause it was overheating, and the fact that it can't hold a candle to this laptop, buuuut, it'll prolly run BF2, so thats what I'll be stuck playing on till I get my desktop back up and running)

anyway, I'ma go thata way now *points*

So if I am understanding correctly, Redline, you are blaming the bling, and the spinner he's got mounted on his GPU, right?

I have heard alot of success with people playing games on Asus laptops... probably because those are modular, and they can pick a different video card, when theirs becomes lack luster for gaming.

Besides, my Tsunami case has tonnes of blue lights inside, and I'm not getting any better performance out of them (grin)

Are there any more solutions to this?
Just got it myself, installed, patched, won't run.  I've done the above steps, including uninstalling/reinstalling.  Directx9.0c is installed, Windows XP sp2 (fully updated), latest video, sound, chipset drivers.  I have no issues with any other game (HL2, UT2k4, WoW, EQ).

giga-byte k8n-sli (using onboard sound)
amd athlon 64 3000+
2gb of ram
MSI geforce 6600gt 128mb

I'm also using a Saitek Gamer's Keyboard.  I know there are some issues with some games (i.e. Planetside) and that keyboard, is BF2 one of them?

Thanks,
Zirq

p.s. plenty of lights too ;p

I hate to look stupid, but what is an X-10 module?  A quick google search gives me the idea it's something with controlling lights.  If that's what you're talking about, then no, I don't have anything like that.  I only have lights on my fans, with no controls.

I have a couple more ideas that I'll try today, if any of them work I'll report back.
