Thank you!!  Being American Indian I feel that my people are still being persecuted to this day.  Every other nation that has come to this country has been free to do what they wish but yet there are reservations that the Bureau of Indian Affairs are suppose to be taking care of and they don't.  There are Navajo reservations that have no running water.  Lakota reservations where the elders die of cold in the winters.  All because the BIA doesn't do their job!  Up until the Freedom of Religion act (1976 I believe) the American Indian couldn't even speak their own language or perform their own ceremonies without the possibility of being put in jail.  Whereas all other peoples from various countries had all the freedom they wanted.  It wasn't even until the early-mid 1900's that we were even recognized as "American" citizens.  Now that is racism.

And the effects aren't still being felt?  The issue with the "It happened ages ago, build a bridge and get over it" arguement, is that the effects can be seen to this day.  They won't be getting over the insults, they'll be getting of the very real issues created, at their expense.  How is that fair?

Every freaking treaty that dam US Government has ever made with the original people of this land has been broken!  We kept our end of the bargin they should have also. 

Next time you need to do your research before stating something.  There are millions of American Indians in this country that are very sucessful with their lives.  And NOT living on welfare.  There are more white people on welfare than American Indians.

It depends on the Nation.  Not all tribes have casinos.  Not all tribes have corrupt tribal leaders.  The BIA, Bureau of Indian Affairs which is a sub department of the Department of the Interior, is still in charge of finances on a lot of the reservations.  And the BIA have been required to give a full accounting of funds that they have been in control of since their beginnings.  This has not been done.  Most tribes have given up on ever receiving what is due to them by the government.

As for the businesses that some tribes put on their lands; yes some of the monies do go to the rest of the tribe and some of it is used for various programs to help the members.  But it still depends on the tribe.  As I stated; not all tribes have casinos.  Or even big businesses for that matter.

The reservations were set up so that the government could put us all into a small area, keep an eye on us, tell us where we could go and what we could do.  Our children were taken away from us and sent east to an Indian School where they were given new "Christian names" and beaten if they spoke their native language. Our tribal chiefs and war chiefs were sent away to a Florida prison and told they would never see their families again.  Geronimo was sent to Oklahoma after a few years in this FLA. prison and was chained to a stake at Ft. Sill.  There he died.  Was this right?  No.

Little by little some reservations have been taken away.  My nation, for example, doesn't even have a "reservation".  We have a tribal complex.  Our reservation lands were divided up between the families in 140 acre plots.  Those plots have since been reduced by wills and such as time has went on.  My maternal family shares 33 acres. When my grandmother passes it will be divided up again into two 16.5 acre lots.  It just keeps deceasing.  And to top it all off the land can't be used for anything except wheat as there is, (ready for this?), a government contract.

In my opinion, the government is still trying to eradicate an entire race of peoples.  Once the American Indians have been shut up then no one will listen and then they can push us under the rug so to speak and close that little black area on their history.  So lets keep giving them alcohol and keep them all drunk (meaning that there a lot of liquor stores just off the reservations and the owners of these stores lead to the drunkenness of our warriors, keep giving them poor health care (meaning that the government keeps closing our hospitals giving lack of BIA funds to keep them open), keep the elders and young ones in the cold each winter so they die of cold (meaning that the Lakota and the Navajo have no way to heat their homes in the harsh winter months and most of their houses have leaky roofs so there is no way to stay warm), keep the tribal lands to a minimum 9meaning that treaties are still being broken and our lands taken away as they keep redrawing the boundary lines), keep our warriors in prison because they spoke out against the government (case in point: Leonard Peltier and Roger Means, though he is out now but still has an FBI file over 3" thick).  Shut that door on so called "American" history and no one will remember what a proud people we were.  What a proud people we still are. 

It is very hard to live the path that Creator has put before you when you get knocked off it constantly.

Uhm. Just a weetle kweshchun...but...have you ever thought of dissolving your reservations and just incorporating yourselves into "regular" American society? As I see it, you're just putting a greater strain on yourselves by content with segregation.
