As someone that has been working in the computer industry for more than 10 years now, I fully agree that compressed air is fine.  I use it regularly on system here at work.  I've gotten to the point where I can angle the can to get the dust out of the HSF units and out of the case as well, so don't worry about it getting into other components.

If your case is located in an area that is prone to dust collection, a little secret that some people use to help minimize the dust build-up is this.  Take a used dryer sheet, and simply attach it to your computer case over any intake fan vents.  Once they are used the sheets are quite pliable and breath well...sort of a do-it-yourself filter system.  It won't stop all dust from getting into the system, but should help reduce how quickly it builds up and requires you to clean your system.

Dryer sheets is a good tip!!

I myself use an air compressor in short bursts from 2-4 feet away from the case.    If you use compressed air or an air compressor, the biggest thing is dont get close up to the components and dont spray constantly (mostly for the fans sake).

Do not use a vacuum cleaner.

Never.
Ever.

They generate so much static its crazy.  Their hoses are usually made of some plastic/rubber mix, so theres alot of static on the end of that hose youre shaking around in your case.  Be hardpressed to find a pure rubber vacuum hose thats safe around electronics.

i just take mine outside and give it a good wash with a garden hose takes care of all the dust and takes out those nasty grease spots    plus if you leave it plugged in it makes cool sparks!

Warning: Do not attempt without adult supervision.

i need a new computer so I'm just going to let the dust build up until my computer ignites in flames.... seems like a good enough excuse to upgrade, doesn't it?

Right now I have filters over all the intake fans, but it still needs to be dusted occasionally. Compressed air is fine. I've heard of people using vacuum cleaners, but it just seemed foolhardy to try such a thing so I never did.

if you wanna see your computer go up in flames you don't have to wait...

try this open your case, find the front USB connection wires (should be coming from the front of your case ), find where they connect  to the motherboard - there should be 4 connectors look for the one that says + or positive and G or ground .... disconnect those and put the G wire on the pin where positive used to be.  Power your computer up and enjoy the fireworks make sure you have your windows open lol and possibly wear a gas mask.  (you could even possible use your computer afterwards... if you plug it out fast enough lol)

if you have no USB ports... just connect a bunch of random wires onto pins with voltage... but just to warn you (especially in this instance) ... stay the hell away from the case and hope there're no flammable objects anywhere in the 50 feet radius lol ... needless to say... the dammage will be irreparable

HAVE FUN!

vaccuums = static, and anyone who knows anything about computer systems and electronics knows static = bad.  I say compressed air.  But dont put the straw point blank on the components and spray the shit out of them.  The compressed air can cause frostbite....on your skin that is so beware of that too.  But if your too close to the components and spray too much in one place and can cause frost...and frost = condensation, and again, condensation = bad.  Keep the straw at probably atleast about 8 inches away.  I usually use it from about 8" to a foot away from it, depending on where Im trying to get dust out of.  If its in the heatsink or fan of my video card, I will get closer to actually get the air where I need it.  Just not TOO close and not for TOO long.

Oh yes, and the water hose idea is BRILLIANT!!!  Ive never thought of that , you could just fill up your bathtub with water, and toss er' in.  FYI, just dont stand in the tub during this process.....</sarcasm>
