I deleted the "Battlefield 2" folder in "my documents" and it hasn't crashed since.  The problem is with your profiles in that folder.

Once you've deleted the Battlefield 2 folder in "my documents" retrieve your account from EA when you log in and problem solved (you'll have to re-map your keys again if you changed them though as they go back to the default).

This patch / manual edit changes the amount of new connections your computer can make per second from 10 to unlimited, as it was before XP SP1. It is my opinion that this is a useless tweak for BF2, as you are already connected to the server when you crash (clicking join game or already in game). This would be effective if, for some reason, you had to connect to a whole bunch of servers to play. The connection limit from SP1 does not limit the ammount of connections, but rather the ammount of new connections per second. Again, since you are only connected to one game server, and maybe another EA server for login info, this tweak is not applicable and I submit that it will do nothing to stop the crashing.

FFS it's just the new patch that causes all the crashes; wait for 1.31

Works for a lot of people but not for some.  I'd say this tip has definitely done a LOT more good then not.  Thanks for the -1 Karma for it though.

This change made no difference to the CTD problem.  I logged the number of simultanious connections running (and I had XFire, as well as TS running as well), this never exceeded 6 at a time.

This hack (lets be honest, it is hacking your Windows), will do alot to assist in speeding up the number of connections you'll get over a torrent downloader, but it doesn't make the difference to the game, or it's post 1.3 crashing issues.

I applaud the effort, even though it landed like "Eddie the Eagle" (google hunt)

Maybe the 1.3 patch made it so you connect to the server more.

So you'll get less lag.
haha, hilarous! When will someone code a bittorrent program that connects "more" so I can get faster downloads?

No, but seriously. I have an LCD that shows CPU/network/memory and I've studied it while waiting for "verifying client data". Almost no CPU is used, network lies at <2kB/sec both up and down and memory is constantly increasing until the "join game" button appears. I run Windows 2000 and I if doesn't wait 5+ sec before clicking join game after a new map is loaded it's an instant CTD...

Well answer this then, when i go on teamspeak then join game it crashes. When i dont have teamspeak on it doesnt crash... ever.

I rather think that while you keep waiting for Verifying Client Data, the current map is loading into the memory. The problem is that - probably wrong coding - the Join Game button sometimes appear sooner than the actual loading process has finished.
So you click on it, but instead of waiting till the end of process BF2 crashes.

Same happens with Windows Update. The Express and Custom buttons appear before the whole page is loaded and if you click on them you hang...and you have to restart Windows Update.

I doubt that any Windows tweak or hack would solve CTD problems.

On the other hand I recommend everyone PingPlotter. When you join a server, look for it's IP and trace your connection with it.
Although in normal internet use the packet loss between the start point (your PC) and the end point is irrelevant, in online gaming the intermidiate hops (routers, relay stations)) must have flawless packet transfer.

When I get lag or CTD, one or more intermediate hops has mediocre/heavy packet loss.

That means it's really better to choose servers which are really close to you. Less ping and less hops, means less packet loss. Smoother game.

Anyway we have to wait for a new patch which will probably fix this and spawn other 3 new crictical problems.

I did this and despite the minor nuisance of having to reset your config (controls, graphics, etc.) and losing your favourites this seemed to have worked pretty well for me. Did it a couple of days ago and don't seem to have any CTD's or "There is a problem with your connection" issues.

you don't necessarily have to delete the entire BF2 folder, rather, delete the contents of "profiles" folder which holds as the name suggets your profile information, deleting it will cause you to optimize shaders again but it usually solves some issues that cause the game to crash.

BTW the folder is located in you Battlefield 2 folder in you documents

Hell all!

I recently posted information about a fix for the Crashing to Desktop when clicking the "Join Game" button.  After months of research, I have discovered that the problem ISN'T EA or BF2 OR the Patches -- it's Windows.

BF2, as we all know, is a game that uses a LOT of system resources - Memory, Processing Power, AND...... Internet/Network bandwidth!  It is the latter of these three (bandwidth) that, with Windows Service Pack 2 installed, is causing BF2 to exit to the desktop.

In a nutshell, Microsoft decided that they would limit (for security reasons) the amount of network traffic being sent from your comupter.  Their justicifation was to minimize the amount of possible viruses/warms being transmitted from infected computers.  Below is a link that has more information on this issue.
You can even download a program to fix this issue -- it has worked for me after everything else failed!

I don't see how windows an be affecting this CTD business, never did it before 1.3....

gonna try the profiles folder that is within the 'my documents' folder sometime though just on the off chance, but the whole setting up everything again puts me off doing it now when I want to crash....

nice job, but in my opinion, it's still ea/dice's fault.... they should know these sorts of things and plan around them.... alas, hopefully one day my favorite game will be bug free......

Enjoy!
The way to fix this issue is to: Check that little box to the left of JOIN SERVER..(Auto Start Box)  Then when you click to play that server and the map etc loads, the game will connect you to server when it is ready.  It crashes to desktop when you click the join server button too soon due to it not being totally done preloading and ready to start.  Yes this is an EA error due to the JOIN SERVER button showing up too soon.

OMG, so this has only started since 1.3?
I have had these problems since day one.
It has so spolied the game and i don't play it much any more.
I was sick n tired of loading in waiting for client data to be verified choosing kit, spawn poit then losing connection.
It would take 3 to 10 attempts to load in and get a game, I hope any new patch will fix this.
It drove me crazy I spent £120 on a new router, still the same.
I fowarded the ports BF2 uses still the same.
I turned off the inbuilt router file wall still the same.
I must admit I was a bit gleefull when I heard ohters were having the same trouble as me with this new patch. Sorry it is not nice to suffer alone lol.
