America rewards hard work but makes sure the vast majority of its citizens don't sit around on their ass without contributing. In America we generally live to work, not work to live.
In Britain, for example, you can go can quit work and sit your pale skinny ass down in front of the 'telly', drink Carling (yech), and watch Coronation street, and the government will send you a welfare check; they will subsidize your (one's) laziness in the bat of an eyelid.

In Europe the bottom line is goldbricking - work can take a back seat.

Which system do you prefer?

1) Europe also rewards hard work.
2) Europeans pay higher taxes so less people suffer from poverty and society is, as a consequence, nicer.
3) Human beings want to be employed. Unemployment is soul-destroying. If someone cannot get employment - say like during a recession - european tax revenue will make sure you don't end up destitute like the hobos that plague most US city centres. The number of genuine lazy people in the world is actually pretty small.
4) Europe has myriad diverse cultures and extensive history. USA is a baby by comparison and a culture of instant gratification at the cost of things like the environment is nothing to be proud of.
5) Working to live is nothing to be proud of. You really want to work just to survive? That's a pretty sad state of affairs. I enjoy shorter working hours and my numerous holidays (27 a year plus about 10 bank holidays).
