Wait until Conroe comes out and kills AMD, then purchase a cheap 939 system or just go with Conroe, AM2 is still a baby.

If you end up getting a socket 939 system, go with an Asus mobo and either the AMD 64 3700+ or if you want X2 get the 4400+

Also, newegg doesn't even have a full stock of AM2 processors yet... (I think monarch does) If you really really want AM2, just wait for newegg to get them all in but, i still wouldnt purchase one.

Also, I would suggest an Asus mobo if you're going with AM2 or 939 but, here are links to the AM2,

ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe Wireless Edition ATX AMD Motherboard

$239.99

or

$146.99

If you want AM2, wait for future revisions. Socket 939 will work just fine for now.

Update: I have to laugh at whoever this is spending time following me around just to drop negative karma. If you think you have a strong enough reason to do so, at least be brave enough to provide your name. For the life of me, I can't think of why I'm getting it here and not on debate/serious talk, where my conservative views should be getting -k's from liberals.

In my opinion, I would go with a Socket 939 system right now.  I just picked up the ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe board for $169.99 and installed a discounted OEM AMD FX-60 CPU and it is TITS!  What's even better, prices are really starting to come down on these components as well.  You can build a sweet system that will hold its power for quite a while.  You don't always need brand spankin' new for power.

I still question whether or not Conroe will hold a candle to AMD over time.  AMD has a solid product.  We can expect good quad-core processors in about another year.  Physics processors are all the rage now.  But if cost is a factor for you, I would stick with Socket 939 and an X2 or FX processor.  There's still plenty of life and scalability in those components.  Plus, give the manufactures time to work out the kinks in the AM2 and Conroe .

I always like to wait a little while after new technoogy comes out to get the reviews and see what's broken on other people's PCs first.

I'm either going 939 when Conroe drops the prices or just going with Conroe if it's really going to be that good.

I'm really tired of playing the waiting game though!

Comes down to this. If you have (2) 1GB sticks of DDR, get 939. If you don't, then wait for AM2 and get yourelf some DDR2. No sense in buying RAM for a dated memory controller. If you don't have to buy RAM, then theres no need in replacing it until you absolutely need to and right now there is still a very attractive option on the table. (Socket 939 with AMD64, X2 and FX)

Am I the only one that just buys stuff when he wants to upgrade? Everywhere i see people "waiting for the conroe", or any other newly high expected part. in my opinion, you can always keep waiting that way, since when it's released, something other "highly expected" will be released shortly. At the moment I'm thinking of upgrading my xp 2600+ with 1gb of pc2700 ram to a 4000+ with 1gb of pc3200 ram, and I'm not gonna wait for new technologies to lose their "beginning of production problems".

Well I just upgraded an AGP card to a newer AGP card. AGP is dead tech, but I bought it anyway because I'm too cheap to upgrade my 2800+ to something more worthy. Hell it works, so why bother. Did that rather than waiting around for DX10, which I'm still doing, but this will hold me over.

Btw... treat yourself. Get 2 gigs and thank me when you're done

yeah just get conroe, it overclocks real good, it will be way better then intels sample at idf since they will realease new revisions. revision B0 is already an overclocking monster, 2.4ghz to 3.6ghz on tuniq tower 120 (air) so i think its gonna be real good. i already made plans on getting conroe by the asus P5WDG2-WS, it already supports conroe. i have the proof since asus tech support already sent me their bios that supports conroe.
