Greetings,

I'm new to the forums, and a relatively new player of BF2 (thank god I've found this game ) but I have a question.

My system is as follows:

CPU P4 3.4GHz HT
2Gb DDR400 RAM
HDD is Ultra ATA
Graphics Card is Radeon 9550 256Mb (no oc) AGP (no PCI-E unfortunately)

I'm running BF2 at 1024x768 75Hz, everything on LOW except geometry at MEDIUM and achieving 30fps.
Is this crap and would buying a Gainward Bliss 7800GS+ be a good investment?

Thanks for any feedback.

Hi and welcome to the forums!
Hmm...according to the other parts of your system it would be a good choice to invest some money in a better GFX Card. I have a Leadtek 7800 GTX and I can run the game absolutely smooth...1280x1024 and all settings on high! Also if you have enough money you should have a look at the newer 7900 GT. It's also very good!

Definately new card, depending on your budget the X1900 and 7900 are the best cards around.

That's usually the solution with a rig like yours.
for me, I have a 3500+ AMD64
2 gigs Kingston RAM and a 6600GT .. i can run everything pretty well on high, and fairly smooth.. BUT i do have the shadows low and dynamic lighting on med ..  it's all about playing around with the settings as well to really get it fine tuned..

couple weeks i should be getting a 7900GTX, which will help 20 times more than my 6600GT

Plus PCIe is much smoother than AGP

I've got 2 x nVidia 7800 GTX, 3,8 gHz, 2 GB 667 mHz RAM, all graphics on high, 1024x768 60Hz, game runs smooth. Only my crappy monitor makes it impossible to use higher graphics.

Does SLI really make a difference in BF2?

Once again, thanks for the welcome, and thanks for the rapid response.

Unfortunately I don't have PCI express so unless I'm gonna swap out my mobo the 1900 is out of the question cos I really don't want to do that at the moment.

Looked on Gainward's site and apparently the 7800GS+ has the full 20 pipelines of the 7900, and according to dabs.com it is a 7900, just nVidia won't let them call it that.

I think that's the puppy, £315, my wife's gonna kill me

I'd karma you all but apparently I haven't got enough posts yet. You have my thanks instead.

Cheers,

Doc

I would say, dont upgrade yet, wait for DX10 cards to come out, then you should get more for your money

30 Fps doesnt sound right, Throw Fraps on and see what FPS you get

He doesn't have PCI-e though.

Yep, that's the essence of it though, don't have PCI-E, don't really want to change my mobo at the moment.

I think it'll be the gainward.

Thanks for all your feedback.

he doesn't have PCI-E, only AGP thus a limiting factor.

I believe the best investment is getting a 7800gs (as you mentioned) or saving up and getting a new mobo that supports PCI-E and getting a higher end card.

how is PCI-E smoother than AGP?  The AGP bus isn't even fully saturated by the highest end cards that are available to it.  There really is little/no difference between AGP and PCI-E (Especially when cards were offered for both).  The only 'smooth' part about PCI-E now is that the highest-end graphics cards are only available for it.

When i moved from one card to another from AGP to PCIe.. it was smoother for me.. but i'll take it from you. I noticed.. but then again, I don't overly know much about computers... so what do I know.. perhaps I should have phrased it differently...

for the money get a 7600GS, i just got the card yesterday. it is a GREAT card that was CHEAP (179 USD). i can play bf2 at 1024 with all the settings on high, (cept for the dynamic stuff on medium) and 4x AA and get 40-50 average FPS. it is a great card for the price, and you can overclock it to 7600GT standards. (im running an AMD64 3800+ with 1.5 gigs of ram)

Yes. Invest in a better graphics card. A 7800GT or 7900GT are the way to be, GTX if you're obsessive about performance. The difference will be going from LOW on everything to Ultra Turbo Mega Fancy High on everything, and still averaging over 80fps. Seeings as you don't have a RAM or processor bottleneck worth mentioning.

Enjoy.

if you get the 7800gs you will be able to run everything on the highest setting with the other stuff you have. one comp of mine has the same set up as you with the 7800 and its flawless, it also upgraded from a 9550.

if one more person tells him to get a pci card im gona go mental.

bah. dx10. microsoft has fucked us all with dx10. dx10 will not be hardware backwards compatable, but they're gonna give us some POS software solution. can you say laggy? how about more ram?

Okay, I stuck it under FRAPS and came out with an average fps of 40-45 depending on what was going on at the time.

I think I'm gonna put up with the crappy performance for now (mostly because my wife WILL remove bits of me if I buy the 7800GS+) and upgrade when I find out what BF2142 needs.

Thanks for all our help.
