i've started booking in annual health check-ups. started at 35. full blood works, analysis, body scan, etc. very affordable and routine thing in korea/japan/taiwanese health systems (less so in the UK methinks).

only thing i'm wondering is at what age should i submit to the finger up the arse exam once a year, too.

The doctor will tell you. I have family history of prostate issues on my dad's side and I still haven't had to succumb to the finger probe. My doc tells me every year to hold off.

General preventative care is the most important thing people can do, and it's the low-hanging fruit in American Healthcare that will improve healthcare outcomes and lower costs. Most Americans don't get annual physicals/checkups and as a result don't catch issues until they get more serious.

it's the same in the UK, even with widely available, socialised healthcare that everyone pays for every month of their life. it's not generally a very proactive culture when it comes to preventative care or regular doctor check-ups. by contrast, it seems excessively routine (to my western standpoint) in asian cultures to drop by the local health doctor's office or hospital. they are almost constantly in and out of hospital just for routine treatments. in korea, for instance, it's super common to just stay overnight in a hospital a drip of various kinds when you're feeling tired or burnt out. crazy.

you go to the dr here with some passing virus or flu, expecting some anti-inflammatory drugs and mild painkillers to help you manage the symptoms.

you get those ... and then they also give you 3 giant blister-packs of these vibes-based 'traditional cures' that taste like shit and do zilch. pure placebo.

the only reason the press acts surprised at any of these old farts' passings is that they get the health care that 50s, 60s, 70s "waited too long to see a doctor" in the joe average obits do not. i refuse to believe in any sort of republican agenda to make america healthy again or whatever. when obama was about that, they fought him every step of the way. it could have been so much better, and they could have been a part of a bipartisan push to improve the lives of hundreds millions of people. but the market distortions!!
