If they didn't have neuroses they wouldn't be extremely powerful tech oligarchs, thats just the way it works.
If they could not be evil that would be nice, you can't have everything.

i dunno, man, i know plenty of highly motivated, driven, ambitious people who aren't psychopaths or social failures. being well-rounded and retaining basic senses of human empathy and decency are laudable aims, actually! singular focus on profit/world-domination/technological monopolies are precisely what get us into these messes, time and time again. i don't think it's particularly difficult or beyond society to muzzle or rein in the evil nerd misfits, either, to be honest. perhaps we need to reintroduce robust bullying in school and demote all this Marvel movie nonsense that makes it seem edgy or in any way interesting to be a social misfit.

Do you know any tech billionaire oligarchs  though?

Trump isn't a nerd yet he seems to have become a billionaire.

I think most of them aren't true nerds, they've just leveraged tech.

i think trump's aims and his ideology - what there is of it - is actually fairly mild compared to the 'post-human' future that drug-addled nerds in silicon valley are cooking up.

What I find interesting about these tech leaders is there no sense of civic duty. Every politician I know tries to wrap what they do in the spirit of civil service. I participated in special education little league today. All of the politicians were there. No doubt many of them are genuine sociopaths but they know enough to package what they do in a respectable wrapper. The Trump era of performative ugliness is just historical strange. It feels like what politics becomes right before disaster.

going to assume this is gin-dry sarcasm, because she is horrendous.

an upgrade from the school marm'ish genre fiction writer he was married to while a more typically bald, scrawny, ungainly nerd type - but still.

it's almost too blatant how extreme wealth distorts and shrivels the souls of these people. she looked like a pretty regular, outgoing woman when she met him. now she looks like a demon that stepped out of a portal from a clive barker franchise.

Speaking of soulless people...I am reading a Henry Kissinger book "Diplomacy."

I was walking around Barnes and Noble and saw it in the history section.

i assume the end goal of amazon is to construct the literal Labyrinth under the domineering gaze of Leviathan.ai. managers will patrol distribution centers in leather pants with the physical signs of the torture they had to endure for promotion proudly shown on their deformed features.

better or worse than thiel's seasteading dream?

Wasn't Kissinger a self-promoting con-artist who never really achieved anything and was as gung-ho for war as the rest of the neo-cons?

The sad part is how many women are going to run after 'that last surgery' in the hope of snagging a billionaire.

definitely not. people were doing ludicrous poses to camera in the first-wave myspace era. who remembers the boxy emo fringes/bangs and the severe top-down angles making the subject look deep n serious? lol. glad i skipped all of that, in retrospect.

we live in a culture dictated by the visual norms and inducements of advertising, with celebrities as avatars of commerce. beauty magazines have been giving people mental illnesses since like the 1980s.

smartphones likely would never even have gone down the route of developing advanced cameras if this stuff wasn't already rampant. even during my university years, just on the cusp of their widespread proliferation, it was really common for people to carry a digital camera on their person in addition to a (comparatively basic) phone. their merging was no surprise, social media had turned everyone's life into an exhibitionist photo reel a long time before the tech got miniaturised.

i carried a digital camera because i'd snap pictures of odd objects off the side of the road and it was giving me kudos from the professor. even a bad snap was well received for "composition." i wasn't even thinking about it.

never big on taking pictures of myself. it always seemed narcissistic.

Neurotic liberals. That is what it seems like.
people want this because AI is flooding gamespace like it's flooding everything else. just a look at itch.io. ai assets, music, writing, and it's coming into steam too. valve made a rather tolerant choice in wanting this stuff to be accurately labeled. in the past, they've removed games from stores for stolen assets. some platforms for online media are banning ai content altogether.

again, you're just mad about any pushback because you use AI to manage your many sordid affairs.

My company is pushing everyone to integrate AI into every aspect of their daily work.

Not sure if they expect productivity improvements or plan to replace us all with bots, either way I'm not doing it.

we are trapped in a 3-5 year doom cycle and there's no way out of it at this point. resources have been committed, cap-ex has been budgeted, the concomitant HR cuts are an inevitability.

it's the 'disruptor' playbook innovated by the likes of amazon, uber, and tesla, and now openAI, viz. run a business at a tremendous loss for years, propped up by VC funding, and hope you can snatch away enough of the market and embed your service in enough essential processes to then become indispensable -- even better if as an appendage of the state.

even all the best financial press are reporting only modest profit increases from AI. many are reporting straight-up losses. the business model doesn't work, for one thing, and the technology, for its all wonders and abilities, still requires heavy babysitting and frequently can fall over in a way that ruins your entire day. that's without even getting into the more abstract stuff about its implications on the cognitive abilities of your workers, who come increasingly to rely on a blackbox oracle for all their answers with little fundamental domain expertise.

we are going to see compulsory AI and mandatory staff cutbacks while this cycle plays out, and it becomes clear that we are in for a market correction of all market corrections. everything will get shitter in the short-term. like, dangerously shitter. nobody is going to 'no thanks' to the AI rollout, not unless you're a genuine industry leader like Apple and have a vault stocked with trillions of dollars and your own closed-garden ecosystem. prepare to say goodbye to lots of skilled, experienced colleagues in the next few years, as everyone tries to muddle on with tools they barely comprehend, wasting thousands of man-hours per year correcting mistakes and trying to fine-tune agents to automate their workflows. joy!

hope everyone enjoys the couple years holiday, at least. take up woodwork. read war & peace. enjoy those hipster craft beers on a beach. the tech-sociopaths and retarded project managers are in control for now.

the thing is: the west doesn't have the strong centralised state and sense of civic/community 'mission' as the east. china can innovate and release world-beating AI models for free, because their tech industry is basically muzzled and compliant with the overall direction of society. their ability to 'disrupt' is kept on a leash, by design - and it's a design that's working tremendously well for them.

by contrast, the western leadership seem intent on now doing for their white-collar middle class what deindustrialisation and mass export of manufacture did for their blue-collar class. what is the endgame here to all these gains and automations from AI? where will all the economic activity derive from? tech oligarchs talk vaguely about a universal basic income, but i don't believe any country on earth is prepared to fully put >50% of its populace on soylent green and weekly bank deposits. it'll never happen.

the west just seems committed to committing civilisational suicide at an ever-accelerating rate. all so that a few misfits can try and live-out their sci-fi geek power fantasies on some mars colony or floating ocean tax colony or some stupid bullshit. this isn't automation that leads to new opportunities and a fantastic new stage of growth in the economy. it's automation that will dump generations of trained and educated workers onto a trash heap. AI is to many fields of white-collar work what working fusion reactors are to fossil fuel industry and its well-paid execs. there is simply no need for it anymore.
