OK so:

The UN is bankrupt because countries are refusing to pay in

War criminals can travel the world freely

Nothing has been done about an actual genocide

The President of America rapes children

What a time to be alive.

actually, if the conspiracy is to be believed, that ghislaine was a reddit supermod of long standing and epstein reached out to moot at 4chan to resurrect /pol/, then pretty much the entirety of the online aspect of the culture wars was fuelled by an elite pedo ring. the schizo-posters were right.

I'm a little bit less concerned about what happens on reddit and 4chan than I am that the free world is being run by a cabal of jewish paedophiles and their goyim lackeys and Trump is so thoroughly compromised by Israel that Jared Kushner is in fact running the free world.

So how about the game at the weekend?
One of the teams really brought it home.

surely your galaxy brain can spare some attention for the goings on in media platforms that prefaced trump's rise to power for the lulz rather than go off on another one of your jew bashing benders. actually, you're a shoe-in for the dregs of some of those sites.

i honestly don't believe that. i'm sure you've googled more than a few oddball questions and somehow ended up on some subreddit sharing your opinions (cats! marvel!), or one providing a two-minute solution for a technical problem far exceeding the success rate a some manual flipper in tech support could offer in two hours on the phone.

even if not directly, then maybe through crossfire between that and some stack.

more fidelity in reddit reporting these days than white house statements.

As far as I know I have never set foot in 4chan

Apart from the very occasional "How in the actual fuck do I ..." google search results I've never set foot in reddit

the hard ideological edge and the toxic parts of the 'culture wars' surface from 4chan and reddit. /pol/ especially.

the repurposing/deviation of 4chan's /pol/ sub-board into a furnace of neo-reactionary thought and a factory of fascist imagery was basically what took the skeleton of the tea party - doddering, conspiratorial, too fruity even for the john birch types - and galvanised it into QAnon. the entire qanon thing was a 4chan phenomenon. all those metal gear solid style green text missives and communiqués were posted .. on 4chan.

https://figures.semanticscholar.org/f5e11dab435e2cf2b1245fc625a6107733a6fb32/7-Figure2-1.png

this stuff escaped its pound and went on to melt the brains of normies on facebook, who had no pre-prepared cognitive filter for this specific form of ultra-ironic/not-ironic-at-all 4chan memery (cf. the bullet engravings of the zoomer who killed charlie kirk, "if ur reading this ur gay lolol" and so on). it started out as disaffected nerds doing 'pepe le frog' nazi jokes and drawing donald trump as the emperor from warhammer 40k. that's very very 'online'.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/343662116/figure/fig4/AS:933598345572352@1599598599238/A-meme-depicting-Pepe-the-Frog-as-a-symbol-of-White-Supremacy.png

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EjlxKAWWsAIj0NC.jpg

believe it or not, this sort of in-joke was where the revival in fascist aesthetics in large part began. a games workshop franchise. all the young people hopped up on militaristic blackshirt bunkum are basically carrying over an energy they first felt playing tabletop fantasy games or crusader kings strategy games or whatever. all this 'clash of civilizations' rhetoric and 'preserving the white race' stuff, the broad racial generalisations and comparison of IQ stats - it's less samuel p. huntingdon (too cold war, too neocon), and more 'new europa universalis DLC just dropped'.

https://assetsio.gnwcdn.com/europa-universalis-5-announced-paradox-europe-steppe-horde.jpg?width=690&quality=85&format=jpg&dpr=3&auto=webp

half these people are still playing an extended paradox interactive games campaign in their minds. real life has become a skyrim mod. the far-right is a LARP.

steve bannon made his fortune selling fake gold currency in world of warcraft. his involvement with the games industry was what led him to realise there was an enormous well of untapped political potential in disaffected, cynical gamer nerd types, who were already adept at self-organising from MMO guilds and had their own well-arranged channels of communication with discord (IRC) channels, etc. then he went onto breitbart and soon swiftly into the inner sanctum of the white house.

https://i.insider.com/5971f6fe552be5b3008b5acf

gamergate was a crucial moment in the culture at large when the backlash against 'woke libcucks' began in earnest. it was pretty much the 9/11 of the internet in modern terms, when the great vibe shift kicked off.

i could go on. it's angry nerds all the way down. we're living in your world, of sheisty fin-tech fraudsters and stanford STEM high-achievers, not the world of the WASPy, snobbish humanities elites.

---

remember - before gamergate and the changes to 4chan, the iconic image of an 'online' 1337 gam0r type was the vaguely anarchic-libertarian guy fawkes mask guy from V from Vendetta. remember when 4chan's Anon group used to troll the church of scientology, and were notionally about holding the rich and powerful to account with hacktivism and mass-scale DDoS attacks? it all seems so quaint.

reddit has sanitised and cleaned itself up a great deal today, it's basically just the new google for crowd-sourced knowledge (and the source for like 40% of the hot garbage that LLMs re-present to you as gospel truth). there was a huge battle for the 'soul' of the site, though, including an extended hate campaign against one of its former CEOs, some asian lady who was tasked with cleaning up the filth (and no doubt making it more corporate and palatable for regulators and advertisers, etc; they didn't change their act for fine moral reasons).

in recent memory not only did it have extremely toxic political subreddits, but entire subreddits given over to pedophilia, boy love, any sort of fetish or fantasy, etc. it was free-reign for all sorts of dark shit. lots of famous reddit moderators were revealed to be sex criminals or worse. they've locked all that stuff down nowadays so that something being 'so reddit' has become synonymous with a kind of tepid, 'mid', marvel-movies-and-millenial-humour kind of thing. but a huge amount of political hysteria was generated on there in its day, including a lot of the thrust of Qanon and 'emperor trump' type shit.

the leaking of 'reddit' sensibility into the real-world can be seen in the commingling of midwit franchises with police brutality, for instance.

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/zNk_MvWkVFk/hq720.jpg?sqp=-oaymwEhCK4FEIIDSFryq4qpAxMIARUAAAAAGAElAADIQj0AgKJD&rs=AOn4CLCzDTSLRVRht5qf7TCR_drj24hz3Q

this shit is corny as hell, and it's nerd-type online corny specifically. repressive police states in the 20th century didn't borrow their iconography from comic books.

both sites radicalised a lot of young people.

I avoid the large subreddits for the most part. I'm on smaller subreddits and they can get a bit too positive for my liking. People can post the worst photos from race weekend and people will praise them anyway, if someone actually calls them trash or provides constructive criticism without it being asked for they get downvoted. I don't care about people posting bad photos but to call some pixelated shot through a fence amazing is too much for me.

I'm on my local city subreddit and every time a protest/political post is made the rightwing people come out. I'll click on their profile and they're posting on several different city subreddits about immigrants or whatever dumb shit.

Police have been told The Punisher disagrees with the way they do things for 10 years and they still use that logo buy hey, what can you expect from chuds who went through a 21 week course to become a cop.

If it wasn't for Bannon, 4chan, and reddit "radicalizing" some young men then it would have been something else. These young men are just acting out the class and identity politics they are assigned. Newbie could probably tell you of the long tradition of blue collar guys consuming right wing talk radio while installing drywall.

I don't subscribe to this top down notion that our leaders are sowing division and so on. They are but the differences between communities and support networks are real.

i think they're just demagogues leveraging opportunities and weak-points created by material circumstances. clearly, they're not responsible for those wider socio-economic factors, only good at capitalising upon them and directing the flow of opinion.

however, the complexion of the culture wars – while we are on that topic – is highly influenced by and downstream of internet opinions on boards like 4chan and reddit. toxic corners of the internet, either through extreme ironism or rhetorical manipulation, basically laundered a bunch of politics & aesthetics that would have been considered beyond the pale a decade or two ago. that filters down to the boomers on facebook and changes that much-invoked 'overton window'. it's not so much that they're directing politics and acting as 'masters of the universe', and more that they're affecting the political weather and mood music, and what it is permissible to say and not say. the tone and language and figures and memes and rhetoric. and so on.
