Not long before any creative is deemed to be a traitor undermining the power of AI or something.

actually on-topic, ai "gun detection" vs doritos and a clarinet.
Student handcuffed after Doritos bag mistaken for a gun by school's AI security system

Student holding instrument like a gun prompts automated system to issue Code Red at Oviedo school
https://www.clickorlando.com/news/local … do-school/
as if kids didn't get to worry enough about being shot as it is.
i don't get why ai is trusted with something like this with lives at stake when it's still very clearly in its infancy of reliability.
fw: health insurance claims ai
we are a literally few iterations from The Boardroom Incident:
complete with a techbro calling it a temporary setback.

ironically, considering the 'us' of this thread title, that being a collection of quondam gamer-geeks ... this is pretty much becoming 100% true.
micron announced they are leaving the consumer RAM market earlier this month.
today it has been confirmed that samsung are quitting the consumer SSD market in 2026.
coupled with the post-crypto/AI goldrush for GPUs, we are effectively seeing the extinction of the 'desktop PC' in real time, especially the 'self-build gamer tower' concept.
there's even rumours that off-the-shelf tech like laptops will be reverting to 8Gb RAM base models, commencing next year, just because of the pinch on RAM as all the companies pivot to milking the AI thing for everything it's worth.
someone ran some figures on twitter, and a self-built gaming PC in early 2025 now would cost ~$1200 more for the exact same parts. and that's presuming you can even find them in store. people are panic-buying storage and RAM as we speak.
and all this so that giant companies can develop total surveillance systems/states, while mongs get to distract themselves with the jangling keys of generating some of the ugliest videos/images you've ever seen in your life. neat!

Some of the AI porn is, um, remarkable
Also we need to drain the aquifers to cool the GPU farms.
I'm fine with that, I mean, who needs stupid aquifers?

fwiw i think some of the calculations about data center water use were a bit off ... like orders of magnitude off. but, yes, generally it is crazy that we are hiking electricity/water/utilities rates for small townships to build giant UFO structures on their outskirts, with no perceivable benefit to anybody.
i brought up micron and samsung in the fwp thread with the frustration that it's all converging now of all times. i'm not even going to blame myself for sitting on relatively low prices in the past while my own machine is running on pixie farts. this is on them. if you wanted me to buy before, maybe stop teasing that thing that's like twice as good coming out in four months!
e: already having planned on not migrating from gtx 2k until it was absolutely necessary, anyway.
imagine dropping to 8gb for a windows pc in 2025/6. we're going backwards to a time where you had to optimize config.sys for the express purpose of running doom.
e2: what exactly do gamur geeks really have to look forward to anyway? slopware?

pc gaming is basically dead. between the death of AAA gaming and hollowing out of expertise at the major studios, and now the consumer market being abandoned in favour of b2b and the AI industry ...
there's still gta6 but yeah i agree. even indies are feeling it with credit card companies pressuring sites like itch.io because some right wing advocacy has its panties in a twist. it'll be interesting watching valve in all this.
while i don't think it was worth trading all this consumer market just to boost surveillance state fetishists and ai gooners, i'm not sure whether gaming itself is really a thing to be mourned much (outside of sympathies for developers who lost their jobs). crass, badly cultured, outwardly horrible people and their bad ideas in greater numbers than just a few bad apples.
before ai started figuring heavily into all this, expertise and solid dev teams and creatives have been being binned and screwed (mick gordon!!) by corporate suits for such reasons as celebrating ends of successful years and releases with layoffs. straight up admitting now that they can't make games like they used to because the data and expertise is all gone? lmao, fund a team of modders to reverse-engineer your own legacy software and the tech side will be done in like a month. it still blows me away what people have done with DOOM of all things.
