imo too many cat toys and too much cat furniture is a bit like throwing too many options at a small child. perhaps rather, too many games into a steam library.

there's few things worse in the world of gift cards than a holographic sticker over paper requiring surgical precision to remove without damaging the code. who thought this was a good idea.

this is like a few rungs down the ladder from dilbert waiting for a specialty spring to navigate its way out of the czech republic, but now i have an open ticket to see if the gift card will still be honored, because non-returnable.

there have been some moments of difficulty when i just thought 'fuck it, i'll reinstall a dating app and be away and out of this within the week'. it's really that quick and simple in any big megalopolis like tokyo or seoul. but, really, i'm quite committed to the idea of having my own space and a nice relaxing haven. if the cat could be brought to heel, i'd really have it made here. city centre apartment for about the same monthly rate as i'd pay for a mortgage in my county hometown in the provinces of the UK (pop. 115,000 people).

walking around tokyo of a sunny morning, watching people go to work, listening to the birdsong, watching the butterflies cavorting around, a blanket of silence of everything ... which is so well organised and efficient, everything runs on time, etc. etc. it is basically like living inside a pokémon gameboy game. the living quality is exceptionally high.

plus, i introduced this one to my family back home in the UK. we've vacationed all over the place together. things between us are really good and simpatico ... when the cat isn't in the equation. tough one.
my mum always said that you don't marry the person you marry their family, and you're already living with one of the in-laws.

for better or for worse, there genuinely do seem to be a high - and increasing - number of younger millenials and gen-z who are basically socially conservative, whether out of a reaction to things around them or out of capture by specious 'trad' aesthetics and the ideological consensus-making enterprises of peter thiel et al. they are basically soft radicalised and sincere about it, as opposed to cynical and opportunistic.
I think women are unchanged in the fact that they largely still want to be wives and mothers.

The trad thing is popular among younger Gen Z men who still optimistically believe they will settle into a career, marriage, and home ownership in their mid-20s like generations before them.

I know a lot of guys who wanted children and wives when they were younger but who are now in their 30s enjoying all of the benefits of money and freedom and totally reject all of that trad stuff.

You don't have a wife and kids either. Let's be real about how many people who are married with kids and secretly hate it. Stuck in relationships or single parenthood because they bought into trad nonsense.

Don't do it.

I think a lot of family men go through a quiet suicide - drinking, smoking, eating shit and not exercising.

i mean, lots of people go through that rigmarole even without a family or wife. loneliness or unspent energy can lead you down the exact same paths.

it's too hard to generalise this stuff. for everyone who rushed into marriage out of social pressure or because their friends were doing it and posting cool pics on instagram, there's a lonely incel or stressed girl-boss facing down spinsterhood. everyone is on their own paths and it's just too hard to even compare.

i don't know about this whole 'til death do us part' thing, but i do know that i myself personally felt really done with all the rakishness and chasing skirt by my mid-30s. i realised something was quietly changing within me when i was passing on dates even with high-quality, interesting women who were doing all the initiating and practically throwing themselves at me. my appetite for it seriously started to wane. the thrills got old. maybe that'll change after years of being settled down. nothing is guaranteed and we have to manage our emotions and expectations constantly.

i also don't really buy this line that 'men in their mid-30s finally get some money and want to enjoy themselves' thing. that's just extrapolating your own personal experience to everyone else, which doesn't necessarily follow at all. some people come into money much younger or much later. and having the money to woo women isn't exactly the deepest and most fulfilling pleasure in this life, in any case. it's not that deep bro. get a hobby that doesn't involve seeking validation from a constantly rotating gallery of dating app matches.

My Instagram is all luxury watches. $8000 watches. Total waste of ad budget.

Uzique, I think people largely don't change. You would likely get bored after a few years of settling down with your Zoomer fiancee. You will hit 40 and then find some Gen Alpha 20 year old who would totally let you manipulate them into whatever so long as they don't have to live at home anymore.

my other half is my age, lol. 'zoomer'. i have never dated a zoomer. i have no desire trying to navigate a relationship with someone born after bf2 was released. the coochie isn't worth that much cognitive overtime. i've toured all the vineyards in that valley.

oversimplification: boomers' parents post-GD had a dearth of social freedom (in some aspects) but a lot of spending power. boomers' children and younger have far more social freedom, but no real spending power. both are environments where being shackled to a threadbare marriage or being chronically alone can eat away at a person.

a glut of both could begin to patch a lot of stuff up. imagine being able to afford a house you don't have to share just by working a single job at walmart, or being able to support a family with the same, starting basically any time you want without having to spend 15 to 20 years after high school trying to stabilize in an every-rat-for-themselves world. i really don't have the patience for economy editorialists or whoever picking apart middle agers and young people for a reality birthed and controlled by the elderly and/or wealthy interests.

i know republicans want to shut the touchy-feely programs down, but there shouldn't be homeless kids relying on summer lunches at schools in the first place. shithole country, where you could get cancelled for saying 'good riddance' to a guy who wanted your head on a spike.

Newbie, I don't even know what to do at this point. From what I have seen actually trying to help many Americans makes them resentful of it.

...

Uzique, I don't think I have the energy to keep up with a Zoomer at this point. Even some of the girls near my age (29 to 35) who I see going clubbing and out for drinks looks like too much.

I really rather sit down at one of my these and go over memos and set policies than hitting the trendy bars in Hoboken.

Of course I am not sitting with Kenneth B. and discussing the final solution.

But when you see your words and ideas actually make it into memos other people need to look over it feels great. Much better than dropping hundreds of dollars on mixed drinks, expensive food, and a hangover.

there's clubs and then there's clubs. have had this discussion many times before. a sweaty meat-market full of college kids and the horny and desperate is no place for a 35-year-old, agree. but there's a whole different subclass of places that's more about an actual subculture, and those places are not age-restricted. a lot of the festivals i go to in japan have entire families in attendance. there's toddlers wandering around in earmuffs.

while america is melting, youtube wants two hours of my time to show me a drama video about how a youtuber got "destroyed" by a couple of vtubers.

why is this in my sidebar.
