Things I will have to get used to being in a red state: cowboys.

I went to the main square of the town and there was a guy just hanging out in front of the places dressed like one.

it was almost disappointing when that streak ended.

re: enshittified games,

cherry picking a bit, and "then (2015)" lmao that's just 10 years ago, but dang if they don't have a point sometimes. there's so many side-by-sides of the new just ignoring what the old went out of its way to even fake. i remember playing red faction like "can't wait to see what they have 20 years from now," lol.

People being nostalgia for the early 2000s is so weird. I was there. I prefer the freedom of today.

...

I saw an article online about a convicted felon being elected to a school board. He committed credit card fraud as a young man and they charged him with a felony for each swipe. He was like "That happened 15 years ago. I am not the same man."

I thought "yeah if it happened in the 1992 I guess it is no big deal." Then I remembered 2010 was 15 years ago.

the internet was much better in the 2000s. i think my relationship to technology was more charmed/enchanted too. collectively it felt like big tech had much less of a hold on us too.

declinist narratives are always tempting but in this case the world has become less stable, more divided, more fractious and so on. the late 90s/2000s (aka the zoomer Y2K fashion) seem hopelessly naive and earnest in comparison.

yeah i'm going to go ahead and keep being nostalgic for days when ai wasn't trying to track me through grocery stores. how does a grocery store packed to the back of its lot every day suddenly become "financially unviable?" more of a data sales company than a food sales company? it'd serve them right to be nationalized.

and the games. inarguably enshittified in recent years. aaa just keeps adding new layers of polish onto turds. non-interactable environments and objects, sparse populations of npcs, stupider ai after two or more decades away from a game with decent pathing and interesting behaviors, "we're committed to supporting xbox live," get lost. the video and others like it make a strong case.
