We are all getting old. God has cursed man to die because we cucked his tree.

We should be able to talk about our health problems in a supportive environment among men who understand the male loneliness epidemic.

I will start: acid reflux issues. Interesting new health problem. Probably related to vaping. Anyone deal with this or have ideas other: stop vaping?

Do you sleep on your side? Sleeping on your right side can exacerbate acid reflux, while sleeping on your left side can calm it.

Vaping and diet. Drink more water (reduce all carbonated drinks).

I've been trying to gain muscle mass and have realised that the weak point in my body is now my joints, not my muscles. Used to be easy enough to work out my muscles to the point of fatigue but now the joints are giving up first. Maybe I need some cod liver oil or something.

Joints or tendons? Tendons grow slower than muscles - which is how body builders manage to rip them off the bone.

As a STEM megabrain I'm really careful to sleep on my right side - I would not want my left hemisphere squashed by the useless right side.

As you get older you'll need to eat earlier or suffer heartburn at night.
Alcohol really doesn't help, also chew your food thoroughly.

magnesium is best for joints. should know that from your rolling days 😉. i take it as part of my routine now just to help me get proper rest and recovery, especially after a heavy weekend.

cod liver oil is one of those supplements that seems to have been around forever, but even the biggest metastudies return a '/shrug' as to its benefits. ymmv. my grandparents force-fed me that stuff from a young age, as well as feeding me plenty of actual cod and fish, and look at me now – i have a galaxy brain. maybe it does work.

creatine seems to work very well for recovery and general growth. don't ask me though, i'm not a gym head. i've only encountered it in discussions about its general benefits, including for cognition.

no health problems at my end, thankfully, which is a small miracle considering how hard i put the accelerator to the floor for most of my 20s. i would even go so far as to say that i look younger than just about all of my peers, touch wood. the wonderful tonic effects of that victorian miracle powder from the new world?

i will say that alcohol derails me for half a week at a time now. it's barely ever worth it, in objective measure (alas, to be objective!) 3 full days of being tired or at reduced levels of vim and vigour. brain fog. all sorts of digestive and intestinal issues after drinking. my body felt pretty elastic and hardy in my 20s, but at 35, a heavy drinking session is a quick way to waste a lot of money and make me a grouchy, despondent arse for most of the next week. still, i go out. there's still some fun to be had while draining the last drops from the sack.

yeah I pretty much never drink anymore. even if I have a single big bottle of peroni at night, my sleep takes a hit and I feel it the next morning too. magnesium is a good shout, I'm on the protein powder but not on creatine, should get that sorted. trying to figure out a decent diet too, definitely need more fiber than I'm currently intaking.

wonder if our accelerated 20s will result in our hearts popping at 55, my uncle and dad already had heart issues, can't wait for mine!

Epic heart disease on both side's of the family, already had three bouts of atrial fibrillation, as part of that discovered I have a minor heart hole - as 1:4 people do.
Memento mori I guess.

I had this completely misguided thought growing up looking at the rapid advancement of technology that in my life we'd sort mortality and it wouldn't be an issue, either through medical means or consciousness extraction means, whatever, always lived like I'm never gonna die. had to 180 that outlook in the last, idk, decade or so.

both sets of grandparents (were) well into their 90s in my family. dementia seems to be their main predation. at that point, just give me a fucking speedball, i'll take the coke overdose and cardiac hand grenade.

the good news is i think it's fairly easy to rejuvenate yourself if you get serious about it before you're 40. there's still time. a half-decade of good dieting and cardio and staying away from ciggies and alcohol can drastically turn things around, if longevity is really your main worry.

covid lockdown era saw me totally sober and abstinent for about 1.5 years, eating well with almost zero takeouts or junk food, plenty of calisthenics and home exercise and daily walking, etc. i dropped basically all the excess fat in my body and looked a full two years younger. that was with barely even trying, all other things considered with the forced changes to lifestyle back then. it was easy to put on some extra muscle weight with a huel shake or an extra serving of scrambled eggs here and there, etc. made me realise (and appreciate) how much of a finely tuned machine the body is, really. put good things in and good results come pretty quickly.

Do compound lifts. Deadlifts, cleans, squats, presses. Compound lifts work joints and tendons in addition to specific muscle chains. Also make sure you're stretching. I was one of those people that dismissed stretching as somewhat unneeded, despite playing sports in my youth where a good 30 mins was stretching exercises. Once I started lifting I really got to notice how stiff I was.

A good proper stretch in the morning, before, and after a workout

getting resistance bands and stretching is a game changer. i did that when i abandoned my office lifestyle as my working positions and posture went to shit (working in bed, working on the sofa, etc.)

hips and shoulder stretches make such a difference to my day. oh and sometimes just hanging from a bar for a couple minutes.

That reminds me of how grateful I am to not have to work on cars or with my hands all day. We can keep working even if we pulled a muscle.

i consider myself extremely blessed on an overall scale w/r/t working lifestyle. so long as i'm a little bit conscientious – no sitting down all day without moving, etc. – i can work and earn and stay healthy. it's easy for me to spend as much of a day as i want walking, working outdoors, exercising, making food, etc.

plus outside my door in any direction is one of the world's great cities. every different neighbourhood is like a different zone of an RPG. can just find some of the low-key best food or coffee i've ever had for about $10. that's just an average workday.
