the decline of arcades here is depressing. genuinely fun place to hang out with like-minded friends. we still have lan party places, but some of those just floated away like so much vapor. if you want to shop at walmart, you're covered pretty much wherever. joy.

the last time i wanted anything like a gaming room was in my 20s. seeing how obnoxiously bright cold cathode was cured me of that, and the electronics industry's unholy addiction to blue LEDs maintains that distaste.

it's still not something i'd mind in a media room. a cabinet with old consoles and a modest CRT could be fun. i have a couple NES cartridges floating around FFS. it's just that it would go into the same room as my musical instruments, books, and radio shack detritus. i can't see myself building a wall-to-wall stack of funko pops.

one of my neighbors had a gaming room, i think. it could be like 3am and purple light or some RGB cycle would be flooding their back yard from out their window. that's got to do some crazy stuff to the brain.

My local 'arcade' has a Time Crisis game, usually when the EOFY company do comes up I load up on free booze and bunk off early and play that for a while, or go to the cinema if there's something on.

I congratulated the wrong black guy at work for winning an award. He accepted the congratulations. I have no idea if he knew what I was talking about or not.

you're just describing the petit-bourgeois. not really a race thing per se. jay evinced the same attitudes and social climbing. 'well-to-do' working class like to punch down on their feckless and irresponsible neighbours, etc. small church and chapel morality are often mixed in with it. somewhere between thin-lipped puritanism and other forms of parsimoniousness, hard work, suspicion of pleasure, etc.

it's not unusual for immigrating groups to be highly educated. the old cliché about taxi drivers who were engineers back home in baghdad/the former soviet union/korea/etc. often times it's the second or third generation immigrant communities who close ranks and want to keep out the newer generations. there's your blue-collar polish/irish/italian/etc. dynamic. they built the townships, erected the church spires, and ran the stores on main street. naturally they don't want to see kbbq joints and indian banghra classes all over the place. that's because they are still intrinsically precarious. still essentially petit-bourgeoisie. the 'old school' americans are WASPs on long island or something. i don't think they're worried about highly educated koreans or iranians or whatever. they're concerned with too many jews getting admitted to princeton or hahhvaahd.
