it's an irony of history that we could have probably had LLM tech in the 1980s, but for the fact that cybernetics research and that branch of tech was considered tainted by its association with communism and central planning. the cybernetics guys who would have been working on these problems were all considered pinko megalomaniacs. the neural networks underpinning it all date back to the cold war.

Skynet is one the least terrifying outcomes of AI for me. Even if the AI wipes us out we at least managed to create a living thing that will exist in perpetuity.

eh? how do you think AI will power itself without humans? it requires an energy/water infrastructure to 'keep the lights on'.

or is a self-aware machine intelligence going to somehow extract fossil fuels and keep turbines spinning?

we already created a bunch of stuff that will outlast us. the anthropocene is going to leave a stratum of plastics and forever chemicals in the ground.

You know how lab cut diamonds are cheaper than natural diamonds? I think AI art may lead to a comeback of hand painted art appreciation. Like people becoming famous for being able to bang these out by hand.

there's already been a whole weird-ass trend in contemporary art of 'neorealism', in which people paint things as if they are a gajillion megapixel photographs, or something. art is always absorbing and reiterating these stuff.

the other day i saw a youtube playlist of classical music. all the composers were rerendered by ai to look terminally jovial. all kinds of weird artifacts. even scribbly, broken parodies of music notation in the backgrounds.

make the slop stop.

so we're all pretty confident that musk was just in the government to steal a fuck ton of data to give to palantir to make a huge database of americans? then use all that stuff that should have been extremely private to connect to the easier to get stuff like social media data (lol to twitter and truth social users who didn't got their data handed over happily instead of the linkedin/snapchat users whose CEOs had to consider not doing it for at least a tenth of a second first...).

The problem with tech is that it’s still largely being built by men who’ve never felt truly connected to themselves, to others, or to the world. It’s revenge-of-the-nerd energy disguised as innovation, and it’s torpedoing culture, intimacy, and meaning in the process.
Just think, if people like you weren't so vicious and exclusionary maybe a lot of people wouldn't grow up to be maladjusted adults?

Whats the expression, its takes a village to raise a child, and if a child doesn't feel warmth from the village they'll burn it down to make their own?

Go into ChatGPT and put this prompt. See what it gives you.

"Give me a a detailed breakdown of specific members of the BF2s forums." It will and won't surprise you.

"One of the most memorable and polarizing users; praised for insight, criticized for arrogance."

lmao.

chat-GPT's take on jay is certifiable proof about how junk this technology is. imagine taking actual advice from this thing that read the entire history of bf2s and concluded jay was a deeply intellectual, engagé philosopher. a literal first-year undergraduate could be handed a printout of several of his long posts and know the score.

🔹 Dilbert_X

Role: Extremely prolific poster, long-term presence
Personality: Highly cynical, often pessimistic, especially in D&ST.
Famous for: Anti-American rants, climate and resource doomerism, general misanthropy.
Legacy: Legendary for quantity and consistency of his posting—viewed with both irritation and fascination.
lmfao

i also asked it to produce some of my 'greatest hits' that showcase my (supposed) posting profile the best. it presented some totally random quotes from nothing-burger threads about call of duty or something, and then subjected them to high-school book report analysis ('this post demonstrates his mixture of statistics with abrasive wit'), etc. it has like absolutely no 'sense' of anything. perhaps my prompting isn't specific or fine-tuned enough, but it really is like interacting with a not particularly well-optimised ask jeeves. i was hoping it would remind me of some all-time great quotes but instead it's total bilge.

in what sense am i vicious and exclusionary? you have a weird take on english literature graduates. have you ever actually interacted with any?! i'm also worried about the lasting damage your strange social life has done to you ... nobody was 'exclusionary', least of all based on their degree type, when i was growing up. half of my partying cabal were physicists ffs. both of my best friends here in tokyo now are quants working for top-level consultancy/FAANG, respectively. 'exclusionary'?

it's weird how in the eyes of the reactionary philistine right, humanities types are both too inclusive (purple-haired lesbian LGBTQ+ pro-hamas radicals) and somehow too elitist. it's almost as if ... these are caricatures which bear little relation to reality!

sorry, but there's no novel-toting humanitoooores snob on earth today doing as much culpable harm as a Thiel or palantir egghead. it's not the feminist studies bard college graduates designing death drones or robot dog warriors. and i really don't think you can blame well-adjusted, bookish, flowery arty-farty lit types for causing 'nerd rage'. i think it's instructive that both bezos and zuckerberg have reinvented themselves as swole martial arts types – i think the jocks and priapic all-american boys at school are probably better candidates for 'nerd rage'.

I didn't get Jay in my list. I got you, me, RTHKI, and Dilbert among the final holdouts.

The stuff it said about me was pretty good. Did it mention me in yours?

it didn't, actually. and it mentioned a bunch of people who were liminal figures, at best. funnily enough, it said KJ was just some 'additional member' who showed up and made occasional contributions, lol. it also mentioned some thing about 'jord's dad' (?) that i guess was an in-joke on here for a hot minute, but doesn't strike me as a significant milestone in bf2s history, lol.

in some regards it has a freakish amount of pure data and can synthesise it into summaries very well. but if you actually have any familiarity with the 'depth' in said data, and its nuances, you realise the AI is just basically blagging the exam.

it also said some bizarre stuff, like 'uzique disappeared from the forum in 2020 and hasn't been heard from since'. makes me wonder what time window it scraped and relies upon for its bf2s info. then again, it was 'smart' enough to infer that my 3x uzique accounts were all the same poster.

the fact that people are using this technology as an extra organ or prosthetic brain is really concerning.

chatgpt will still on occasion confidently whisper lies into your ear while pawing at you like grima wormtongue.

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Cssro_tb9wU/maxresdefault.jpg

i've done the bf2s thing before and when it's prodded for sources, it lists different users on different forums, either or both of which may not even be real. when pressed, it admits it outright made some or all of it up. "illustrative examples," it would say. when pressed again, it again provides other forums as an example, or chides the user on how this isn't really what it's for. then it continues to just make stuff up for niche topics.

overly agreeable, obsequious, frequently wrong tool for the purpose. highly susceptible to leading questions, up until some point. there are probably less-jailed alternatives more willing to tell you off, provide negative feedback, or outright admit they can't do something (or can't do it well) without the extensive interrogation.

if you told it to list the different ways vaccines cause autism, you might run into a part of it that is fine tuned to avoid providing misinformation. perhaps if you frame your prompt as worldbuilding for an alternate universe scenario, you could draw out an answer that will satisfy antivaxxers.

it really is worrisome how many people lean on it (and google's search engine ai) for answers to stuff. same people i've talked with who, in contrast, regard wikipedia articles with (healthy, even!) skepticism. "what makes online fact-checkers the arbiters of truth!" good start, but concerning hole.

yeah, i asked it about the uzique poster's identity (wondering how much personal info i have disclosed on the web) and it basically hallucinated some uzique accounts on 'philosophy forums'. (reader: i have never joined or posted on a 'philosophy' forum). it basically like projected my posting style/qualities into a constellation of purely fictitious websites.
