i've been in asia for the better part of 5 years and i have never once stepped foot into a massage parlour or anything of the like (and there are plenty of dodgy 'hostess bars' and late-night 'karaoke' joints with more than just meatloaf covers on the menu). it is really not hard to avoid that stuff.

but yeah, in general i see absolutely no reason to go to a place where you 10x the average GDP/capita. do your guided tour, see the awesome heritage, sample some restaurants, and then gtfo and hop back on the coach outta there. in any place like that full of rich westerners and lots of bars or nightlife, that will be the seedy dynamic between locals and visitors every single time. people travelling for 1000s of kilometres to go out in nightlife spots in SEA 🚩🚩🚩. they’re definitely not there for the local beer.

that's a good point actually, and maybe a bit of an unintentionally misplaced brush on my part.

the people in positions of power have more exclusive clubs for sampling the forbidden generations. the pervy 50+ engineers and divorcees get to play at power by flying to thailand with the intention to seek out the local 12yos.

you definitely know the area and dynamics better than i do. all my knowledge of it is second-hand or from hearing anecdotes from other travellers out thattaways. i've always given it a wide berth for the same reason.

i know there are really nice areas in thailand and hidden gems (i think we've had this conversation before ...), but large parts of it seem to be quickly morphing into a slightly further outpost for the 'benidorm/magaluf/costa del sol'-type package holidays that working-class young brits used to go on. club 18-30 Mediterranean holidays, and so on. cheap booze, sun, photogenic beaches and clear blue sea, etc ... and plenty of sex and bad behaviour. too many 20-25yo ruffians with bad haircuts partying on beaches in thailand now. not my vibe.

to say nothing of the enclaves of old pedos, or russians avoiding the war, or koreans following their social media feeds, etc.
