Without looking at the link I assume the German tattoo artist looks like someone you would meet at a rave in Brooklyn.
the progressive guy is irritating but in a clearly identifiable and discountable way. 'i get it'. he has big blindspots in his knowledge and has clearly not read any critique left of the center of liberalism and the centrist status quo. it really is a very american type of 'progressive', which in europe would barely merit the term. he would be a much better-informed interlocutor, especially to deal with the new forms of alt-right thinking, if he had read anyone from, like, nietzsche through to foucault. all the stuff is there, lying out in the open. he could upgrade his political firmware and be much smarter.

But like I said before the reason why it is becoming more popular is that the traditional American dream thing is increasingly out of reach. Your parents being upper middle class doesn't guarantee that you will be too anymore. The Hallmark movie lifestyle that we were raised to admire just isn't obtainable any longer for most (white) Americans.
And the MAGA people know they don't have access to that life any longer. They know that by the rules of America, that money is #1, they are beneath the Indian and Chinese families buying out the suburbs.
I always understood that I am not part of the Middle American stuff and the Hallmark movie lifestyle wasn't made for me. But imagine if you grew up thinking that you were destined for that lifestyle and then it doesn't happen. on the one hand, there so obviously is a left/left-centre critique to be made of the neoliberal experiment and the economic consequences of globalisation. could have been handled a whole lot better, despite so much of it being tainted with inevitability. years of high growth and the american dream weren't infinitely extendable, especially with 4/5ths of the global population waiting at the doorstep for their turn to modernise.
on the other, the (rightfully) angry and dispossessed working classes should realise they have a helluva lot more in common with other groups on their economic level, and organise and direct that discontent towards the elite that sold them out. instead that elite are employing charismatic demagogues to turn them against one another. a tediously predictable strategy.

I think the post-World War 2 American and pre-World War 1 European way of life was totally held up by colonialism and exploitation. We aren't going to be able to bring that prosperity back to either of our nations because the conditions of the world just aren't there. I know that is a totally "woke" way of looking at it but accepting that doesn't mean you are cursed or don't deserve the way of life you have. But that is how some people take it when you explain that our way of life is held up by the suffering of countless individuals.

When I bought my new car I bought it at the dealership by dad manages. He introduced me to the young (white) guy who was prepping my car. I felt bad for the guy. I was in that position too once. I knew what it was like to have to do work for someone living a much more privileged life than you. FWIW though, I no longer feel that class envy after getting my small small drop success or whatever.
