i think trump saw what musk did - and more to the point, did for him - with twitter/x, turning an app with some thorny regulatory responsibilities and complex content moderation into a univocal platform for his own worldview, and figured having tiktok as a big gen-z booster app would be much to his advantage. it’s straight up media control … from a populist right that has risen to the top by fulminating about control of the mainstream media. they are manufacturing their own consensus and voting results now. and big tech are onside.
it’s almost as if all of this has been written about exhaustively before. how the average little guy’s preference for their own patterns of desiring and consuming (i.e. don’t take away my little scrolly app! i like it!) easily slides into support for fascism and turning a blind eye. deleuze and foucault wrote about this 50 whole-ass years ago. and here you are saying tiktok is fun, it has cat videos, etc., so what’s the big deal???
