do you have kids now ken? wondering what would even strong-arm a grown man into watching a musical fronted by a disney teen star. (no shade, genuine question.)

i finally got around to seeing ‘evil does not exist’. i’ll give it a 6.5 out of 10. like the director’s last work (‘drive my car’, which was better but not by much), the soundtrack work by eiko ishibashi is far and away the best thing about it. very striking choice of OST which gives the films an indelible quality.
No, GF wanted me to watch it.

Children of Men: 6.5/10. I liked the premise but thought it was a little too shallow.

Snowpiercer: solid 7/10, maybe a little higher. I was surprised at the quality of the storytelling in this. It's one of those dystopian films that is so over the top in it's premise yet still finds ways to subtly reinforce the them throughout the movie. It gives you little morsels to keep you curious. I liked it a lot.

i would swap those ratings around. children of men has better cinematography, and snowpiercer – like all joon-ho's work – deals with its premises in an incredibly dunderheaded and shallow way. you basically get bludgeoned half to death with the 'point' of his movies. there's something very bombastic, melodramatic even, in that era of mainstream korean film that always strikes me as tonally 'off'.

Oh I agree with that analysis. Children of Men had pretty terrible dialogue and the pacing felt a bit off. The sound engineering was also horrendous. I felt the lack of detail in the story did a disservice to the whole film.

I mentioned that Snowpiercer is very blunt in its theme, but I still felt like it was able to create subtleties within that. I think the "over the topness" actually served the story well.

that's a good point actually, sound engineering has changed and come along so far since then. but children of men is noticeably higher budget and more polished than snowpiercer i think; or rather, snowpiercer has that kind of 'glossy' hi-def look that all modern films have, no matter how carelessly made, whereas children of men's cinematography and editing actually give it a strong aesthetic of its own.

the 'over the topness' of that entire corner of korean film is definitely a matter of personal taste. it definitely has its many admirers and plaudits.

I didn't really appreciate it as much in Parasite, but maybe i was just surprised with Snowpiercer. I legitimately had no idea what it was about before I watched it.

I like Clive Owen and thought he did a very good job with the role (I think he wom an Oscar for it?). I liked the intensity, and the film definitely captured a certain aesthetic that I enjoyed.

Anyway, I've scratched the dystopian future itch for now. Nosferatu is in the queue, but i feel like I'll need to be in a certain mood to watch it.

Dredd - 8/10

Loved it for what it is. 90minutes of action.

I saw The Substance last night. Interesting movie. Went sideways a bit at the end. Not quite sure how to rate it, as i have conflicting thoughts and emotions about it.
