My biggest concern is that my neighborhood's tennis court got destroyed by the wind. And I can't go in my jacuzzi until the pool guy comes and cleans it
hope all your extended circle stay safe and well, KJ. i heard a bunch of insurance companies basically cancelled fire coverage on the west coast in the last few years. i can't think of a better suggestion to move, and move fast, than losing your insurance coverage when living in wildfire country.
scariest weather pattern i've experienced yet was this last autumn in the south of taiwan. the typhoon season lasted unseasonably long, well into late november, and included a few monster storms – afaik some of the biggest cyclones globally all year. kaohsiung, where i was staying, had its first direct hit in something like 40 years, a freak storm that hooked up and around northeast to the plains, and skipped the usual storm-buffeting coastal mountains. it came ashore about 0.5km from where i was staying. that was a hairy 24 hours. no fatalities, but the city was totalled. pretty much all the vegetation was gone overnight, and the beaches looked like trash dumps. the main port of the city had cargo containers thrown everywhere like lego bricks. i have some pretty insane videos on my phone somewhere.

The school turned the heat on. It is really hot in my room.
The first world problem is that some of the kids are whining about it being too hot. Like I get it. But there is nothing that can be done about. You will need to get used to working in hot and cold.

Don't you have a thermostat?
Jay is an HVAC technician, you could ask him to take a look at it.

I bought a new ipad.
The old one was pretty solid and had great battery life - but couldn't really open any websites and couldn't clear its own memory. I reset it and installed the only app for cats which would run on it.
The new one feels like my finger could poke through it - completely useless for hitting a burglar.
Somehow its decided my phone and ipad should sync themselves, so now I've got some hybrid fuck knows what mix-up of settings, bookmarks etc.
I think I'm supposed to log in to icloud or something to unfuck this but its sort of working so I'll leave it.
Unfucking facebook took a while.
"You have logged into facebook on another device, for safety you must reset your password"
"You have reset your password on another device, for safety you must reset your password"
This went on a while until I stopped resetting it, nothing bad has happened yet.
Also I don't remember giving apple permission to use whatsapp to send me passcodes.
I only have whatsapp for work, I never told apple about this.
Duo-Mobile (security app for work) has some conflict with iOS 15.whatever and defaults to German language, so if I ever need to change a setting there I'm stuffed.
This is all getting a bit much and I'm ready to live in a shipping container in the outback.

jesus christ, how old are you again? apple devices are literally the easiest devices to setup in the world. you turn them on and sign in to your apple account and everything is good to go. doesn't matter whether you buy an apple watch or a $5000 mac pro, the setup process is exactly the same and migrates everything over.
apple devices also have a chip that stores all of your data and passwords locally. if it sync'd with your existing apps, that's because it has already passed through the onboard security chip, which typically uses your fingerprint or face-scan or some other form of highly robust biometric security.
all meta services like facebook, instagram, whatsapp, etc. have their own security systems that will flag you whenever a new device ID tries to log on, or whenever somebody from a new IP location accesses your account. that has nada to do with apple. frankly perfectly good features, considering the interest that people have in hacking highly private social media accounts? what exactly is your problem here, lmao, you old crank.

Did I want all the bookmarks from my old ipad to overwrite the bookmarks on my phone?
I did not.
I did not.

sounds like a skill issue.
No its a stupid system issue.
"These apps are not syncing between your devices"
Well no, I haven't enabled them on any of my devices, why would they be trying to sync?

your bookmarks, reading list, open tabs, etc. are associated with your icloud account/email. it's extremely convenient. you can resume reading something on your computer which you had originally opened or consulted on your phone. it's a seamless, continguous experience. this is Good.
for whatever reason you've had multiple apple devices and not connected one to the internet, or kept it logged out of your icloud account, or whatever. if you want to keep your private device in a faraday cage for Reasons (i don't even want to know, pedo roy) then don't blame apple.

I did not ask for my devices to suddenly become self-aware and start communicating with each other.
Shouldn't there have been a box to tick or something?
Also I assumed 'backup and restore' meant 'backup and restore'
Not 'backup and only restore the apps which are currently available for an OS which you don't have'
How stupid of me.

I am getting old. Legit First World Problem.
My favorite MILF videos on my HD are still like from 2012. Some of the MILFS are younger than me.
She is only 36 here.

The Italian girl I take to church (???) is 31. Somewhere in America there is a lady teacher that age who is willing to throw her life away.

Those 19 year old girl you watched when you were 22 in 2012? They are almost 30. She is 29.

She is old enough to work wife. Like those weirdos that get engaged at work.
https://youtube.com/shorts/NxsJIIVCRtg? … o48ZqnFM7Q
That shit is weird. "Why do I have to watch this?"
I don't get streaming video games.

Maybe as background noise it makes sense. Sort of like Podcast or YouTube videos. But to actually stare someone else playing a game. No thanks young ones.
I couldn't even get through those videos from our day and age.
I still have a techno song from a BF2 montage stuck in my head. No idea the song. Can't find the video.
I am so checked out of gender politics. What is even going on? Just make more bathrooms.
And the music is bad. What the fuck was that nonsense at the Superbowl?

Rap doesn't play well with large crowds. I mean literally. That shit wasn't party music. Give me some pop 90s throwback. Give me something I can talk with a girl about.

Add some K-Pop in for diversity.

I don't need to see a guy on my TV to feel included. I ain't some homo trad like that. I don't even watch sports.

didn't you sit through all of game of thrones and marvel content?
the game streamers are probably a natural evolution of video guides, let's players, james rolfe, stuff like aoe2 match commentary, arcade socialising, and even just watching from the couch while another friend takes their turn at street fighter on The Nintendo. something like game streaming sounds like a fantastical dream job if you were a kid in the 90s whose parents would've been quick to stamp that out.
harboring resentment against the people who made it in game streaming because it's streaming seems petty. a streamer could have went into parasitic house-flipping and slumlord feudalism or the (arguably more ethical) theft of hubcaps. but instead, they have a channel that some people enjoy watching to unwind. on the flip side, it feels unsurprising when news breaks about how one of the more successful ones is actually a huge douchebag. and the obnoxious among the audience fully invested in the parasocial experience? even worse. gaming culture is one of the havens of cyberbullying, and this geek culture stuff bleeding into the rest of social media has probably not been very beneficial (gaming was better when it was more niche and stayed in its own lane, imo).
-
trailers of heavily curated footage on gaming storefronts are not useful. watching someone work their way through 20 minutes of a game you're considering adding to your library is probably a useful tool if you actually still play video games. before even getting into mod showcases. it's not all in flanderized, obnoxious hyperactivity format, even if that stuff is what has the most visibility from the outside.
something like watching two hours of the cheapest trolls in mario maker over the course of like 2016, while not actually playing the game, can still be fun and way more entertaining than whatever netflix dreck was going on. some people like watching the (admittedly schoolyard) spectacle a ball getting kicked around by athletes. more power to them, too.
that said, i don't really have any horses in the streamer race. i'm probably not going to make a fortune on any NFTs tearfully defending pewdiepie from haters any time soon.

i really don’t like kendrick lamar. nothing to do with politics, i just don’t click with his voice and sound at all.
the worst thing is any ‘typical’ rap fan i explain this to gets it, even if they disagree. but there’s a type of college-educated white person who will lecture me on how Important kendrick is to the Discourse. it’s so cringe. especially when they’re not even american.
i’ll keep to frank ocean or whatever other great shit is coming out of america. the whole kendrick ‘generational rapper’ thing has felt like a weirdly contrived fever dream to me. maybe i am just old too.
a giant beef with drake? the fuck? i have never voluntarily listened to a whole drake song. i thought that was music for suburban tweens. how do you ‘beef’ with a former child star? is kendrick going to release a diss track about corey feldman next?
pass.

I like GKMC, even have a first pressing on vinyl. I think the bar is set so low with mainstream rap that when someone comes along and doesn't rap about women and guns and drugs, they get championed.
A lot of people cite his voice/tonality as the reason they don't listen to him. Rap has been so hypercommercialized and pillaged by BIG MUSIC that it's tough for artists to distinguish themselves. Remember when emo rap was a thing?
Vincent Staples is pretty solid if you haven't heard any of his stuff. Funny dude too. Have run into him a few times around here. Super nice.

yeah, all good points. but his presentation as some sort of 'conscious' rapper goes out the window when his biggest year-defining hit is a totally gratuitous diss track, doesn't it? 'i don't do guns or drugs or misogyny but i will still engage in arbitrary beefs and threaten rivals'. it's not exactly Zingalamaduni by arrested development, is it?KEN-JENNINGS wrote:

voice/tonality pretty much sums it up for me. i don't like the vocal delivery and the beats aren't really to my taste. but i hardly ever listen to west coast music and i am missing so much cultural context there. i totally get that he seemed like a fresh, new thing in a pretty stale scene. plus the whole dr. dre imprimatur probably helped, there's that weird apostolic succession thing going on in rap.
recently i've enjoyed albums by MIKE, billy woods, navy blue, armand hammer, etc. i like a lot of the projects the alchemist is involved with, production-wise. i really don't listen to rap that often though. it's good if i'm taking a jog or long bus journey or something.

I think one of the reasons Kendrick had a resurgence last year was because he said a lot of things people in the culture thought about Drake but wouldn't say. Not Like Us could be put into the broader context of the commercialization and exploitation of black culture over the last 20 years or so, and seen as a push back or recapture of the art form from pop-heavy Drake to someone more in tune with being black in Ameica. Viewed through this lens, it's not hard to see why it became so popular so quickly. And because life is a flat circle full of irony, the song about how "they" aren't like "us" become a sing-a-long track at the biggest exhibition of American commercialization.
Armand Hammer is solid. Black Thought and Danger Mouse released a pretty great album back in 2022 that has more or less been on my playlists since.

Someone broke into my OnlyFans account. I used the same password and email combo that was in a data breach.
They bought like $50 worth of subscriptions and then tried to load $100 onto the account. I caught it within minutes and changed the password on them. I wonder if they even had a chance to download everything from the subs they bought. OnlyFans doesn't make that easy.
Anyway this is a good wake up call to clean out all of my old accounts and data. This is something we should all do in this new Trump era. Tighten up the opsec.

apple has a feature that tells you whenever any log-in you use has been caught in a data breach. they must regularly scan and keep an eye on that sort of thing. a few of my emails have come up before and it's such a *groan* situation. so many websites and services.
i just switched to using apple-generated passwords for all the one-off or seldom used sites. whenever i sign up for something new now i'll take one of their 25-character randomly generated things.

I have started to use the same randomly generated passwords Google provides for things. To their credit their integration has gotten a lot better with that.
Too many services and websites is a real thing. I think I would be one of those parents who don't allow their kids to have a TV or computer in their bedroom or a cellphone until they are 12.

yeah, the apple integration is perfect. biometric security chips to unlock the 'password wallet'. then autofills everything. very secure.
and yeah, at one point the little apple warning for 'compromised by a data leak' was next to like 50+ accounts with the same sign-up email. fuck that. it's a write-off at that point. probably easier to just cancel all the old cards with your bank and get new ones issued.

I use one iteration of passwords for bullshit. Another, stronger iteration for sites I regularly use, utilities, etc. Then a much stronger subset of passwords for any financial logins. I also have a bank account and card specifically for use online.
I do the same sort of segmentation with email addresses.
It's not foolproof, but i prefer it to having to use a password manager.

this is probably a good reminder for me to go through my estorage.
groaning under the weight of old accounts stretching back to the 90s. in some cases, i can only track which account verifies which with notes. some accounts are from those "are you still there" companies who want you to sign in every so often or they'll deactivate your account and make you sub for a month or something to get the right service tier to get your stuff back (side note: i have no idea if i still have any uplay stuff, it's been like over a year). i have false personal information like names and birthdates and security questions laced about to poison the well. it's like spy vs. spy but for (mostly) inconsequential stuff from the 2000s.
as a matter of ehygiene, it also might be a good idea to get your new bank cards issued with new numbers after each expiration if your bank doesn't already do that.

i feel officially old whenever i hear young people speak or see the way they communicate on social media.
it's not the illiteracy (that's a given), it's the neologisms and catchphrases.
"oh, she totally ate!" (describing an actress giving a performance). what on earth do you mean, she ate? presumably in the trailer between takes? 'give me the tea'. sorry? you want me to pass you the teapot?
why is everyone talking like a drag queen from new orleans? stop that.
