I've kinda grappled with that, but it is a net benefit for ukraine since the smarter/capable ones left, and only left the rest to get sent to the meat grinder.SuperJail Warden wrote:

Its a shame uziq isn't here, having expired from having his essence drained over and over, I could have told him "I told you so"LONDON â Nigel Farage, one of the biggest advocates of Britainâs departure from the European Union, reckons Brexit has failed.
Speaking on the BBCâs Newsnight program Monday night, the former Brexit Party leader â one of the most famous figureheads of the Brexit cause â admitted the U.K. had not benefited economically from leaving the bloc.
âWhat Brexit has proved, Iâm afraid, is that our politicians are about as useless as the commissioners in Brussels. Weâve mismanaged this totally,â Farage said, responding to a raft of data suggesting there had been a negative economic impact of Brexit.

The issues in Belgorod are a sign of Ukrainian weakness. I know people don't want to hear that but it is what it is.
The anticipated Spring Offensive is now a "Summer Offensive." Bakhmut is under near total control of Russia. The Ukrainians are unable to defeat the Russians in a standup fight and are now resorting to terrorist like tactics. "Terrorism is desperation" has been the argument for decades. And attacking undefended towns is pretty terrorist like.

-50 votes in 2 minutes in /r/worldnews when I pointed out that things aren't going great for Ukraine at the moment.
It reminds me of the post-9/11 echo chamber.

Reddit is a bunch of establishment centrists.
Why are you posting on reddit about Ukraine? Lol

imo upvotes and downvotes don't really do the "filtering" job they're ostensibly for. Bunch of empty comments still hit top, bunch of reasonable arguments get buried or hidden. Adds nothing to the discussion, and everything to internet point trophy cases (that said, it was still useful for uploaded content, such as youtube where there's like 80 fake movie trailers per actual).
I can think of very little reason why I'd want to engage in political discussion on e-peen social media. Even just observing boomers get bot-banned for taking bait doesn't sound terribly exciting.

Everyone on Reddit is 17 years older than they were 17 years ago, so I'm guessing about 30 now.

I think that the current build-up of Russian troops on the Crimea is mainly a backup plan to save Russia's only Black Sea/Mediterranean access.
They have made contracts with Ukraine under Yanukovych to have exclusive access to their seaports and airfields there.
But that is something that could easily change, especially since the new government was formed with parties from the Western regions only, is EU focused and intends to join NATO.
I dare to say that ANY Russian government would make that move.
Just like the USA under Obama would protect Guantamo Bay, should the Cubans try to invade, or any of their foreign military bases.
The EU is nothing but a glorified gay parade trying to be the new nazis.
Fuck the world police.
Go Russia!

(in all seriousness the brain drain is very real. young brits today who want to work in europe very much resemble irish graduates in the 1990s and early 2000s. very large emigre group.)

i think this is also quite a reality shock for most brits today. poland is doing better economically than the UK. the polish immigrants are all returning home. i think british people are quite used to habitually looking down their noses at anything âeastern europeanâ as being inferior. not so anymore, on several metrics, thanks to their agitating and voting.
a strange consequence of the faragist-UKIP fearmongering: all those campaign signs with endless queues of faceless brown hordes. and what happened after brexit itself? the white, christian, well-integrated polish all went back to their booming country and the tories allowed uncapped immigration from the global south. perfect!

i'm just kidding, i'm not really about to renege my british citizenship. i've even been paying a spiteful amount of tax to HMRC over the last few years, for which i'm getting diddly squat.
I'm still a citizen but don't pay tax. Marginal on getting a state pension.

i got provisionally accepted to a PhD last year under one of my dream supervisors, but the funding lottery didn't go my way. it is ridiculously bad for the humanities thesedays, with the AHRC losing almost a quarter of its funding from 2022/2023, iirc. so i want to keep my home student status for that purpose (i had a friend who spent 4-5 years outside of the UK, teaching in asia, and was then presented with an international student tuition fee bill for his taught master's -- ouch).
no pain for me to continue with this very amenable lifestyle until i wait for my card to be drawn. much rather be in tokyo (or seoul or taipei or just about anywhere else) than waiting around in the miserable, fractious, declining uk.

The brain drain started 20 years ago with me.

i think a lot of western economies that went all-in on the tertiary/quarternary sectors, and imagined they could turn their formerly industrial workbase into a new model army of university graduates working in financial services, servicing clients or countries that do still produce things -- a lot of them are wondering the same fucking thing today.
Well you can produce things by creating value out of pretty well nothing, no real input raw material, books, films and video-games for three.
But you have to actually do it, and you need to find someone foreign who wants to buy it if you want to buy their produce.
Its no use churning out stuff no-one wants, or not producing anything at all, or deciding you're not going to trade with foreigners - this seems to be Britain's business plan.

creating value out of nothing? but the costs of all three of those things are considerable, lol. the film industry is a properly industrial production. hence why all those franchise movies you love are so carefully designed and calculated to turn profits. most books lose money. contemporary AAA video games require about 400 people to make within a 3-4 year turnaround. and, with the exception of contemporary hollywood films pandering to the vast chinese market, it's not as if any of those industries are particularly affected by the needs of 'finding someone foreign to buy it'. anglophone publishing isn't exactly scrabbling around for spanish or mandarin readers.
using the cultural industries as examples really isn't that illuminating. that is actually one area in which the UK still punches far above its weight, internationally, in terms of income and soft power influence.
it's the transition to a financial services-based economy that just shuffles 0s and 1s around on a screen that is really causing us the issues. the vision of britain as 'singapore-on-thames'.
