It was first period today. There is one student in the class who is failing for the year. He is not moving into sophomore year. He is still coming to school though. Tall Hispanic kid.

The students were supposed to quietly do independent work. Instead this guy had a female student sitting at his desk and they were playing flirty grabby games.

I eventually ordered the girl student to return to her desk. The guy student started arguing with me on her behalf.

So I yelled at him "You aren't even graduating." He got upset about that and yelled "that ain't anyone else's business!" We got into a back and fourth where he cursed me out and was upset I mentioned he wasn't passing in front of the class. "You didn't need to tell the whole class my business." I told him "everyone knows already."

The whole class was watching and laughing. I guess they found the drama of it funny. It was probably funny watching the student curse at the teacher.

Eventually after we finished arguing back and fourth. The student got quiet. He then took out his Chromebook and did a few assignments.

I was talking to a senior teacher about the situation and he said "telling the whole class he is failing probably made the whole situation real to the kid and made him want to not fail."

In any case I now realize that I may have given the kid a scaring memory. He will remember the time the teacher told him, the class, and the girl he was flirting with that he is going to be a freshmen again and not walking across the stage with them.

That is an... interesting take from the senior teacher, like in the most after-school specialy sort of way one could describe it. I would think it far more likely the kid would resent the teacher who dropped that info and is more likely to think they and all other teachers don't have the students interests at heart.

Both of these students from my last two post have discipline reports with 20 to 30 entries from different teachers. I can have a parade of teachers who will confirm they are both terrible. I can also produce a parade of students who would say I have been great with them this year.  These are the students people are afraid to have around their kids.

Evil adults were once teenagers too. It is a shame the monsters don't feel included.

Today I learned that many of the employees in the Malaysian factory are actually Nepalese and can't read, speak or understand the local language.
They did have a translator but that person has now left.
This could explain the plethora of quality problems we're having. New problems, old problems repeating for the fourth or fifth time.
To be fair local employees aren't a whole lot better, and the quality of the designs really doesn't help.
"We will depend on operator skill and diligence for the assembly of this product"
OK, so we're fucked before we've even started.

I mean, its fun doing everything in pictures, and a whole lot better than conference calls.
"Sit closer to the microphone, thats great I can nearly hear you, can you connect to the room mic, someone online is eating - stop it"

What you are describing has little to do with the ethnicity of the operators and a lot to do with your technical documentation and your suppliers work instruction. But you know that because you're the one responsible for that piece.

You don't call out IPC and J standards in your technical data packages?

One of the constant issues in manufacturing is the reliance on operator tribal knowledge to move something down the line. Supplier quality and Mfg engineering should be constantly auditing those work instructions and travelers, and updating internal technical documentation to limit this.

That's like, a main part of your job!

That's like, a main part of your job!
The technical documentation is perfect - at least mine is, and they are expected to meet IPC-610 without input from us - being an electronics manufacturing company after all.

Every operator has a PC which rolls through the work instruction right in front of them as they're working.

Every time a quality issue comes up and/or they're audited the question is: "Why in the fuck are you not following the work instruction, and why in the fuck are you just throwing in your own ideas, and materials, and processes, and variables, with no reference to us?"

We now have two local full time employees whose job is to audit them on a weekly basis.

As I said, the quality of the designs leaves A LOT to be desired. Pretty clear some of the designers have 'personal issues', are utterly complacent - I actually heard one of them say "we have no competitors, we can produce complete crap and it'll still sell like hot cakes".
Well we do have competitors and those days are over. Customers are way beyond pissed and if they can buy something else they will.

I've spent a year solid doing little but clearing up major problems on the company's flagship product.
Its lucky there was a huge dip in the market, I've fixed the major problems in that time and now its selling again.
So many problems - the best one was the PCB test jig (designed in-house by the pompous christian guy who thinks he's been bullying me) which flexed the PCB so hard the BGAs broke.

I think my manager has gone senile. 20 Years in the same job will do that.

Long story short, one of my colleagues has spent six months not doing his job, had a machine explode in his face and, is now off sick with covid (actually he's 'off sick' most mondays and often tuesdays) and the project team - complete douchebags - want to order tooling on Monday.

I've explained repeatedly:
A) This is not my fucking problem
B) I wouldn't care if it was.
But no-one is getting it.

Root cause is my manager let my colleague not do his job for six months.
Why should this be my problem?

Another thing thats bugging me is I want to create a robot cell with two robots.
Partly because its the most efficient way of doing what it needs to do, but mostly because I want to program two robots to joust.
My manager thinks one robot with pickup tooling is a better option.
This is causing a lot of friction and angst. I'll keep you updated on where this goes.

Managed to spend the entire budget of another project on external consultants without delivering anything tangible at all

Has been promoted to overseeing all projects.

And:

In the middle of winter the company has decided to shut down the heating for a week while they replace the boilers. Much too easy to do it now than in the other nine months of the year when the boilers are off.

From this point I think I'm going to cause trouble and annoy people.
I think no-one will detect any change.

I've got a job interview circuit coming up either later this week or early next week. It's for a job I actually want that is a hair above me so I would actually be challenged. I'm genuinely nervous and for the first time (ever probably?) I'm actually studying and prepping. I'm even going to get a haircut so as to look slightly more presentable.

I applied for a new role I'm eminently qualified for since and had a 1:1 with my boss a couple days after. I let her know, but she seemed mildly displeased cause apparently at this company they encourage you to meet with the hiring manager even before applying, which feels incredibly wrong to me such that it could skew the interview experience. We'll see if I even get an interview, because the role profile is 2 levels above what I'm at, which would implicitly mean admitting they shortchanged me when I was hired.
