I have absolutely no plans to ever pay back my student loans. Public Service Loan Forgiveness. I will end up well over $100,000 once I start a PhD in Fall 2025. And I will make the bare minimum payments on it until PSLF removes it all.

- Bootstrapping himself with a stint in the military
- Taking a job dependent in large part on juicy govt contracts
- Setting up a company to milk said juicy govt contracts
- Claiming to be a self-made man who worked hard and never took a dime from the govt so shouldn't have to pay any tax at all
- Milking medicaid to pay for his many ailments and taking every other benefit available despite objecting to and avoiding as far as possible paying the taxes which pay for them

That and likely has a goatee and carefully oiled baseball cap with an earthmoving logo eg Caterpillar and rants on a well monetised youtube channel about the evils of big government and freeloaders.

She also wants more students failed instead of passed. When I tried to explain the issue with paperwork and documentation she basically called the teachers lazy. Meanwhile she isn't the one working until 11 PM to put grades in or answering emails for admin.

So Walgreens admitted that locking up merchandise has led to lower sales of that stuff. They also have said they don't have a good solution to the problem. If they don't lock it up it will get stolen. If they lock it up they won't be able to sell it.

Whenever I go to Walgreens the Tide stuff is locked up.

So I have personally experienced the shift in spending.

Also, if you are buying a house in an area you should go look at the local Walgreens. If the stuff is locked up you are likely in a low income or high crime area.

it’s weird how this has affected seemingly so many countries after covid. low-trust societies got even more low trust, it seems. bankrupt on trust … combined with cost-of-living crisis/record corporate profits, underfunded police departments who can’t and won’t prosecute thefts up to four figures, and it’s basically open season for shoplifters.

meanwhile in korea and japan i can leave my $4,000 macbook pro at a cafe on a table all day long and nobody will even look twice at it.

shopping at these perpetually-understaffed stores with locked security cases is a nightmare. they're almost invariably understaffed which means you have to find a harried, baggy-eyed clerk traveling somewhere in between manning the cash register and stocking shelves, just to fumble a locked shelf open while you stand there feeling like an asshole waiting to grab your secured item that wouldn't even amount to a rounding error in the company's value if you had a thousand of them. i'm sure some people get off on flexing that kind of power over retail workers, but i'd rather just go to the grocery store where i can also pick up some scallions and a bag of apples. and not, you know, pad the wallets (any more than i have to) of companies that lie about shrinkage to cover up store underperformance.

crypto is breaking a lot of young people’s brains. you hear about the 1 in a 100 stories (which are often barely disguised inside trades or rug pulls), and they all come away with this idea you can make life-changing sums of money with a few risky trades. the idea of plugging away patiently at a job for decades to reap rewards is alien to them, i think. the culture is all smash-and-grab.

which makes sense considering the value and rights of labour are fucked in this current stage of tech-feudalism. you can’t blame them for not having a work ethic. honest, hard work doesn't pay.

noticed something similar in korea. even the ultra-competitive corporate jobs which have thousands of applicants for each role, the samsung managerial class or engineer caste, don’t pay high enough salaries to get on the property ladder in the greater seoul area. about 3/4s of all young koreans are trading stocks. salaries are basically useless when it comes to achieving a normal middle-class lifestyle and security. you have to speculate and take risks if you’re not inheriting a spot squatted on in gangnam by your family through sheer luck for the last 4 generations. whole system is fucked. and korea seems to be a bellweather for where we are all going in the rich nations, in this as in so many things.

I participate in labor and political organizing on the side. My profession tends to be among the most politically active. Engagement is still really low. These people's lives and careers rely on politics and people still don't show up.

This results in only the most ambitious and connected people becoming involved in politics. I almost don't blame these leaders for not caring about the well-being of their voters since their voters don't seem to care about their own well-being.
