Unity Engine, something I have never heard of until last week, changed their subscription model. Indie developers are upset. Gamers are upset. My reddit feed is upset.

I don't get it. Isn't this why they warn people to use open source engines?

People were saying 'watch out' for awhile now. I've been picking up bits and pieces about the latest as I've seen posts, so we'll see what happens.

Here’s why so many video game developers are suddenly abandoning the Unity engine

On Monday, Unity announced via its official blog that, as of Jan. 1, 2024, it would change the terms by which it licenses its engine. One element of those changes was the introduction of a new monthly “Runtime Fee,” which would be charged each time a qualifying game made with Unity is downloaded by an end user. […] This would’ve been controversial enough by itself. Unity usually makes money off of its engine by sharing revenue with companies who make successful products, but this changes the deal dramatically in Unity’s favor, using shaky metrics that aren’t readily accessible to companies outside of Unity itself.
CEO Riccitiello, in addition to being an alleged sex pest, pops up from time to time as a recurring villain in industry news (although other storytelling says he helped EA through a rough patch and is now helping Unity through its own).

Unity bosses sold stock days before development fees announcement, raising eyebrows
CEO Riccitiello sold 50k shares this year.

Is that egregious? Also, big layoffs earlier this year. Seen it suggested elsewhere that eve above strip-mining Unity, this is an organized attempt to deplatform1 or force developers into mobile-like monetization, or otherwise hurt the indie scene (though the engine is also used by bigger titles, chances are you've played some without even realising). I haven't read the full small print of the pricing model, but worst case scenario sounds like it would suck for those cool devs who don't ask for much. Question remains if it's even enforcible in some countries?

I guess in Unity's apology or whatever, it's supposedly a "big misunderstanding?" I haven't watched or read it, but but the figurative excrement has already hit the fan and it's hard to rebuild trust. Murmurings of a class-action. Elsewhere, the Terraria people are making investments in competing engines as a middle finger.

It's probably a bit old-hat to call oneself pessimistic in this era, and these things have their dips and peaks, but a lot gaming has kind of sucked for a bit now. Express Fry-shock when confronted with news about the corporate langoliers cannibalizing stuff.

The Metal Gear Solid collection is available on Steam now. Available for the first time outside of a PS3/Xbox 360 collection way back when.

The graphics of the PS2 games holds up. The camera and controls aren't great.

i like seeing old games revived even if it's on a new or digital platform (classic gaming can get expensive and space-hogging really quickly). saw a bunch of konami stuff there that stirred a few memories of rentals.

it's annoying when games are just allowed to die because a company doesn't want to release them as freeware but also doesn't want to maintain them anymore. all the creative effort that went into them forever locked away until someone reverse engineers it and hopes they'll be left alone about it. meanwhile, you can watch movies from over a hundred years ago. there's just not that same sort of culture of preservation for some of these games in the industry.

Konami is going to remaster all of their old Metal Gear Solid games it seems. Putting up all of the old games on Steam seems to be part of promoting their remasters. The classic games have mixed reviews. They half assed the project. The games have a nice launcher but they are basically ISOs run on emulators.

The first remaster looks good though.

I am going to pack up my PS3 and send it my mom's house. She can put it next to the original NES I have down there. Maybe in 30 years those things will be worth something to someone. The NES will be like 70?

...

Also, PS3 controllers do not work with PCs unless you download special drivers from some websites. I don't want to put that shit on my computer though. I bought third party PS3 style controllers on Amazon that actually work natively with PCs. But they don't connect with Bluetooth on PCs. Shame!

likewise, don't want to get into driver sketch to get a ps3 controller connected. check dualshock4. it may work wirelessly with windows.

there's a few controllers out there that work with windows on bluetooth. i haven't used any. one of the descriptions on amazon says something to the effect of "perfect gift for your Gamer(TM) friend and/or family member." besides making you go 'bleargh,' it's so general. like selling an all-purpose tire advertised to somehow fit all vehicles and perform optimally in all conditions.

buying a controller for a capital-g GaMeR is probably like buying rainman off-brand undies. if you're already aware that someone plays games, they're probably already at the point where they've got a preferred setup. the saying goes, 'don't look a gift horse in the mouth,' but what would someone with a drawer full of gamepads do with another gamepad? put it in the drawer. don't waste your money on plastic they won't use.

I am sure the dual shock 4 work natively. I have never had one in my hand but assume it feels different than the classic PS controllers. I have an Xbox controller which to Microsofts credit works flawlessly with everything you throw at it though I can't get used to the feeling of it. It is entirely possible that I have played so much mouse and keyboard that I just am not used to interacting with controllers. Also possibly autism.

I put away my PS3 official controllers next to my Steam Controller. Remember that? What a piece of shit. 😂

it's been maintained as an overall improvement in side-by-sides from the beginning. i probably wouldn't mind using it on pc, but all my relevant games work fine with xbox or steam on the rare occasions outside of platformers where a gamepad feels like an improvement to me.

last i checked, the reactive led can be dimmed but not completely turned off. a thing for vr supposedly, which wasn't relevant to me at the time. led lighting can get obnoxious on peripherals for reasons i've mentioned at least 3 times. further, when it's on something like a mouse, the unit can get annoyingly warm. turn that stuff off.

I'm trying to enjoy Diablo 4 but am not.

Doesn't help it's randomly frozen twice.

1 is arguably the moodiest, if that matters.

There's probably a million better ARPGs out there right now, to where "Diablo clone" is probably an obsolete term and feels like an insult post-3.

Blizzard took a giant downswing years ago imo. A combination of company BS, always online shenanigans, poor attitude towards players, declining game quality, and lazy static cutscenes that feel like a ripoff considering what people were expecting from them (Diablo 3). Speaking of, I felt neutral on the money market. It was nice for some people who could make some cash that way, but I think probably made the game even more of a hacker magnet. In-game, loot felt more commonly unimmersive, unrewarding and rarely useful than previously.

Being out of the loop on their stuff is nice. Haven't even seen a trailer for D4, and from what my contacts have mentioned it doesn't sound like I'm missing out on much.

Honestly never had a desire to play 4.

Friend said let's all play. Then played it in his own time and never with me/group.

So I only got it to play with friends which never really happened.

Not sure what I expected but was pleasantly surprised. It definitely feels more mature and toned down.

Apparently most of the stuff is actually from Florida. It really makes Miami look fun.

Will definitely be keeping an eye out for discussions about the technical aspects. GTA5 still looks pretty good in 2023. Goes to show what a studio can do with a budget if allowed. Still, I don't think I finished GTA5. Stopped maybe at around the time I was bobbing around in water vats to afk the swimming skill. Money's worth derping around Los Santos. Caught the ending on youtube.

What do you suppose they'll call the next GTA Online? GTA Online 2? GTA 6 Online? Unchanged?

I didn't get past the opening bait and switch. None of the pathways or lifestyles or whatever they call them matter. I went corporate and got sent into the same story mode as anyone else.

One mission left in act 6 of RDR2, I know there's an epilogue but this is the furthest I've gotten in a Rockstar game.

After 2 years finally close to finishing.

Did you finish it? Took me a few years to get to the end, kept restarting and getting distracted by all the side content. Same as Skyrim
