Ah. I've always felt some measure of success helping jumpy rescues get to the point where they could sleep through an overhead thunderstorm.

I was walking to my car and a cat popped out from an alley next to me. We both didn't see each other around the corners. I yelled in surprise and the cat saw me and bolted down the street. We scared the hell out of each other by accident.
Cat update:
Still a maniac, steals slices of bread, runner beans, spring onions, and eats them.
Sweetcorn and crisps are favourites, can't open either without being mobbed, will happily eat corn off the cob.
Thought she was going to be petite but has put on a good growth spurt and is now pretty well a normal size cat.

Goddam cat prised open one of the air vents and climbed into the AC system.
Luckily it was the one vent which has a cavity before the hose and she stopped there, and I happened to see her do it.

He's two and eats other dogs poop. So I don't know if I would go so far as to call it "sage" advice

Cat is now full size, still belts around like a maniac.
Caught a fly on the wall by stretching to full height, cupping the fly in her paws, slowly dragging her paws down then opening said paws so it flew into her mouth.
She is consciously trying to be a good cat but has poor impulse control. A short time out in the garden room sets her straight.

The meme is that cats do whatever they want, but I've found that cats will usually try to work around their people and follow whatever expectations they're able to divine. Even though the pet world is constantly weighing cats against dogs, they're not dogs. Nobody expects a horse to behave like a squirrel.

Cat finds best hiding spot
We get worried the cat might have escaped or got stuck in a cupboard and look everywhere
We don't find the cat
We rattle a crisp packet in the hope she'll reveal herself in return for a crisp
Cat reveals herself and gets a crisp
This is becoming a regular event and The Cat is getting quite fat.
