A slob with a filthy house full of pets would have a filthy house if they didn't have any pets.

If you have a cat that sprays, everything is going to stink. Should neuter your animals anyway. There's already enough unwanted pets.

If you don't want to hang around animals, don't go out with someone who wants animals. Seems like a red flag in terms of your compatibility.

One of my students is very active, hyper, and friendly most days. Some days like today she can be very down. She has two friends in the class who are nice and patient with her. If she is ever feeling down I will tell her friend to give her the assignment or help her later when she feels better. The friend does a good job of it. When I have a meeting with the Child Study Team later I will tell them to see if they can be placed in classes together in the future that way the one who is sometimes sad can have her friends to cheer her up.

I suppose if they're friends then it's cool, but it sucks to lay the burden of taking care of a child's psych problems on the shoulders of other children. That's extra emotional baggage for caregiving and listening personalities, imo.

tl;dr tech fwp:

business spends years asking me for lists of alternate ISPs and their rates, which I spend some time compiling and forwarding on occasion, pushing for the ever expanding fiber services. just this morning, boss made an executive decision after what I'm told was "hard research" (read: 15 minutes looking at a paper ad), and we're going with one of these companies not on my list:
https://www.reactiongifs.com/r/2013/10/turned-on.gif

by the time I was informed, it was a done deal.

I'll probably be asked to hook up whatever shitbox, overpriced, "cheapest option" modem is being picked up to replace the older shitbox modem. I've likely mentioned before that some years back, I'd researched and bought a darling of a piece of hardware, only for the boss to change ISPs behind my back ("we had no choice!") to a service that wouldn't connect to it. I still need to recoup that money, I think.

I've warned repeatedly of red flags, bad consumer experiences, and notorious throttling belying advertised rates. but I guess despite being the go-to IT guy (a position I don't even want but have to fill out of necessity), I'm too young to know what I'm talking about on a topic more pertinent to my generation? I hope the boss's TV shows stutter and that the next photo gallery takes 3 hours to upload. "oh, I'm sorry, it's going as fast as it can, but I'll try and get right on it."

can't help but feel really put out because of my wasted efforts. looking forward to spitefully reminding them about it the next round of grousing about disagreeable internet and phone service, or the next time I'm asked to keep an eye out for ISP replacements or provide some other tech input. although this post is more acerbic than the wording I'll likely employ.

people in their 30s and 40s are innocent-eyed tots if you're a boomer. I guess that generation forgot what it was like when their expert opinions were thrown out the window by even older generations.

I can't even count the number of times I've been asked to research something only to be told the decisionmaker is just going with a hunch.
Then its my problem to implement.

Now I'm fine with pushing it back.

You've pretty much got it down to a nice summary. Unfortunately, I'm going to be hooking up the new kit if I want internet at the office. Kicking that particular can down the road will just land it in a pile of dung.

Or I could disappear for a couple days and trust other office people (or even worse, the ISP) to do it. No, thanks.

If the new modem is bottom dollar crapola, I'll let the big guy in charge buy a better one directly out of company funds.

I've lobbed a hand grenade, now we have an interdepartmental meeting to - uh - review.

Basically one dept has been doing the laziest over-the-wall 'work' they can get away with, leaving my dept to work 10x as hard to patch it up.
I've pushed back harder and harder to no avail and here we are.

The clincher was laziest slopey-shouldered person of them all who had monumentally fucked two projects sending out a 'lessons-learned' report saying what a great job he had done, and only inviting positive feedback, signed off by his manager and the dept manager.

Work got some polo shirts. Smallest size is a large. That's when I realized the only other office worker who isn't fat or old is tall and skinny.

While I do generally like my job, we just had our review and even though I busted my ass last year, survived layoffs, I didn't get a promotion. Not even a step up in title that doesn't come with any other perks (like being called 'senior' - which is a joke).

Decent pay raise, which yeah is money in my pocket, but a title seems like so much more than money.

One positive aspect of the company I'm at is we haven't had to do the typical layoff sweep. I wouldn't mind a fancy title though. "Newb the Enchanter" has a nice ring to it.

I've heard so many corporate stories that just end in tears. An unsurprising number of them involve nepotism, the good ol' boys club, closed-off, pulled-up ladders, shutdowns due to incompetence or malicious money management at the top, distinct lack of meritocracy.

I don't think business should be nationalized. Not every job should be a government job. More regulations are needed, and better protection for unionization as a viable (if imperfect) means of negotiation.

The other day a student came to me in the hallway and asked if I had tape. They wanted to put a flyer up. I walked them and their friend into the classroom and gave them a roll of tape. The student then passed me a flyer for myself. I picked it up and read it. The kid was asking for donations. They mentioned their family was struggling and other issues. I gave the kid back their flyer and pulled out my wallet and gave them 5 singles and told them good luck.

A student came into class today and they mentioned they were hungry. I said "cafe is next period." The kid said "at least you can buy food. I don't have any money." The kid then put their head down and didn't do any class work. I had a $10. I told the kid to pick me up food from the cafe, get themselves lunch, and bring me back my change. The kid was grateful. They brought back the right amount of change too.

See? I am a not such a bad guy. My only sin is hooking up with the support staff.
