I had rsv last year

Meanwhile covid is so fucking annoying even my senses of taste and smell have deserted me.

Every day about 7-8pm I come down with the worst fucking headache ever. Last night I almost threw up from the pain. Otherwise I feel almost normal.

It will be interesting to see if you have any long term effects from covid.

Every time my fraudulent Indian CAD designer took a trip back to India he came back with a respiratory infection - moral - don't hire people who are going to travel to India on a regular basis.

if i? i’ve never had covid. that’s you. i think it has measurably knocked -15 points off your IQ in the last 12 months.

all sorts of illnesses have chronic side-effects for a subset of people. again, this isn’t an argument for shutting down society indefinitely, is it? i have only recommended the most practical and exiguous course.

No, just shutting down the travel-obsessed.

i’ve been in one place for 2 years. before that i was self-isolated for 1.5 years in the UK, when that level of restriction was justified, prior to vaccines. i didn’t even see my then girlfriend, who was a 2 hr train journey away. our relationship ended.

think you’re going to have to find a new line other than “travel obsessed”.

i’ve always spoke about the necessity of international travel and human beings, as well as goods, crossing borders in terms of the international labour system and global markets. i’ve never made an appeal to open up airways for package holidays.

and, it’s quite right to point out that for as long as a small group are necessarily exempted from travel bans, be they ambassadors and diplomats or manual factory workers who undergird so much of the labour markets in the west, then there will be a ready vector of covid transmission that defeats the whole point.

china tried 3 years of totally closed borders and they’ve been playing whack-a-mole with covid in various cities the whole time. playing with tens, if not hundreds, of millions of lives, throwing them into the most draconian treatments possible at the flip of a switch. it didn’t work.

still you’re ranting about ‘travel obsessed tourists’. they surely weren’t the problem in china. and i’m not one of their number. so maybe time to, erm, actually make a fucking point, eh chap? you are tilting at windmills.

NR posted an article about COVID deaths. The comments are a lot of "What about the deaths of despair from the lock down?" That's all fake news. There was no jump in suicides. Maybe a small jump in overdoses related to addicts getting stimulus checks and using it on hard drugs.

But! If conservatives want to die at higher rates of COVID...I mean sure go for it.

There was an increase in suicides among young people where I am, and unfortunately my ex/gf was one of them.

Did she die because she was sad about the lockdowns? Do you have data to prove a jump?

Macbeth, nobody takes their own life because of a single reason. Arguably, the pandemic lockdowns were  the straw that broke the camel's back. During the pandemic there were also increasing waiting lists for psychological assistance as so many people were experiencing depressions or were suffering from other worsening mental health issues.

I don't care about US data. Half your states didn't even give a fuck about covid or take any meaningful action. In northern europe we did, but the flipside was an increase in suicides. It even became national political talking points in some places.

Also I don't appreciate your needlessly callous tone, for fucks sake.

Macbeth: posts a comment about covid-related suicides in the US

Larssen: suicides were up where i am

Macbeth: shows data about suicide rates in the US during the pandemic

Larssen: WhO cArEs AbOuT tHe US??!!111

Larssen, you interjected into the conversation with a personal anecdote that while very tragic, is of no relevance to Macbeth's point.

He linked US data, but asked for the following 'data'. As if I need to send a death certificate or something.

And the whole of US data still doesn't tell you much with places like Florida in the mix. Or most of the R states.

That wasn't callous by the measurements taken by the CDC.

Nobody's making fun of you or your ex for that suicide. IIRC the forum was pretty much unanimous in its condolences at the time.

I'm pretty sure I've seen some piling on out of you as well.

the problem with the philosophical take of ‘ultimately nobody can deduce why someone takes their own life’ is that you can’t overinterpret lockdown stats to blame covid measures for a rise in suicides. if it’s some impregnable mystery or something irreducible to a mere organisation of facts and circumstance … you can’t credibly try and sway discussions on covid policy by relying on emotive anecdotes.

of course everyone is very sorry about that happening to you larssen. just like everyone is very sorry to hear about loved ones passing from covid. they are both tragic circumstances but the sorrow part is ultimately not that helpful for guiding policy. sunt lacrimae rerum.

there have been measurable upticks in people reporting mental health issues because of the pandemic in the UK. the lockdown criticisms tended to home in more on the effects of extended isolation and loneliness: in the elderly and those who need shielding, and in children and groups where socialising is considered very important to development. but it does seem like a very politically dubious choice to present an increase in anxiety or depressive disorders as a ‘worse’ ill than pretty much unmitigated death. america has got way too comfortable with a very high level of covid death. it feels like the political class kind of gave up on trying to fix that special type of stupidity incurred by the trump admin.

China lying about its covid numbers

WHO begging china to be honest and supply truthful data

Sensible countries, starting with Italy,  imposing travel restrictions on travel out of china

Britain dragging its feet and prioritising travel over health safety

China acting belligerent and demanding free travel for its citizens

Its like deja vu from Jan 2020 all over again.

The bottom graph's peak is 0.15% of the top graph's peak.

We're still in a pandemic, anyway. People trying to act like it's ancient history. Vaccinated, still wearing my mask.

It’s the other shit that’s making me sicker than covid

One thing I did notice about mass masking in Japan and Taiwan was that I didn’t get a cold or flu that I usually would.
