at least finally intel is getting back on track. Would have loved to buy a new intel instead of my opteron but the p-d performance is just too bad

They took the 530$ Conroe for the performance tests on the IDF.

And these were the results:

With Conroe you get a processor for half the price and with a performance increase between 16 & 40% compared to the Athlon FX-62.

AMD got the crown for producing the fastest/cheapest CPUs for the last years. Intel strikes back with the Conroe and it will take possible years for AMD to get back. If there are still users who say that the AMDs are better than the Conroe - stop beeing only subjective and compare facts.

Remains to be seen what AMD will be offering in '07, which is in my upgrade timeframe. I'm not prejudiced; if Intel is on the top for price/performance then, looks like I will be going back to my Intel days of 1995. Heh.

thats what it looks like now the new conroe revisions (cpu) are way better than the ones that intel used in IDF... a 2.13ghz conroe now is on par w/ fx60 not overclocked...

btw, conroe can overclock to around 3.6ghz on air... from 2.4... now thats awsome

So are they then going to have to come out with new motherboards to support the fsb and socket?
Or are they just keeping it the same?
Right now i have a socket 478, some have said that they discontinued making newer versions in the 478 line and that they are moving on with 775.
Is this true?

775 LGA is the current socket in production and also the same socket for conroe. The only difference in mobo compatability is the express chipset on the mobos. The current socket would be the same with the future processors for now. Socket 478 is like toasted history. If you want to upgrade, get a new 775 mobo.

Right now it's still AMD in the lead....
the only reason to get an intel is probably if you're on some kind of budget.(e.g. compare the Pentium D's to the AMD dual core ships and there's a notable differene. the only thing to drool about for Intel is the Mac chips and Conroe/core Duo which isn't that much to drool about)

I heard from many reviewers and friends, blah blah.... AM2 will make prices fall $20 - $50.....
