this new twitter verification thing is going super well. all hail elon musk, the genius, who is here to save the public sphere an $8 fake account at a time! this will surely help journalism/news orgs, political discussion, and the future of communications!!!

I suppose one comforting fact is that the people fooled by parody accounts now were also fooled by satire accounts and misinformation bots before.

Considering people are drawn to train wrecks I think this whole debacle might actually positively impact Twitter's user engagement.

Musk had the right idea in diversifying the income streams but by god is he going about it like a fucking moron. The investment genius also bought twitter at the height of the tech boom as now we're in the midst of a bust with shares dropping and people being let go left and right at the tech giants.

twitter's shares dropped dramatically because musk bought the platform. he rashly agreed to a share price buyout ... the news of which directly took like 20% off the share price.

we are watching one of the worst business deals in history go up in flames, in real time.

all the bankers and consortiums who dipped into this were prepared to lose money in the short-term, maybe even to write it off. but i don't think even the in their most pessimistic moment thought that elon would cause a mass advertiser exodus in week 1.

the big platform capitalist companies, e.g. meta, google, amazon, etc, were long overdue some staff thinning: agreed on that. meta is burning money at historic rates too on this second life v2 rubbish. all the companies were totally bloated on staff and most of them seemingly do little. there's so many tiktoks and instagram rolls of 'day in the life' influencer bullshit from these companies. some ditzy late-20s 'project manager' who seems to spend half their workday at HQ in meditation rooms, being catered with fancy food, or playing ping-pong to 'help thought flow' or whatever. all for some ridiculous 6-figure or NYC salary.

On the other hand, office rec rooms, benefits, and the occasional catering aren't necessarily bad things themselves. I remember reading about those conditions at Insomniac Games (Ratchet and Clank) way back. Would help ease the inevitable crunch.

After the taste of WFH, I hope companies feel pressured to ease up on the hellish office landscapes. Work shouldn't be a prison sentence even if you're just a data cruncher.

i think people forget that these companies’ main business is our personal data. they didn’t make mega billions out of sinking wells for the poor in africa. they’re mining US.

and having a drug-addicted narcissist running one of the biggest social media platforms is not good.

the guy broke one of the most popular social media sites in about a week. mass layoffs … then asking for valuable staff to come back. haphazard rollouts … which were then fudged and rolled back.

i don’t want to ever see another fawning PR piece about genius musk again. the guy is a total clown. manoeuvring yourself onto boards and taking credit for things you didn’t do are not laudable skills.

So what, is this 44 billion dollar company staffed like a small business now? Press 1 for mom department, 2 for pop department.

yeah he literally panicked about the company’s finances in week 1 and fired everyone. he’s a genius, baby!

alternative take:

“11,000 people lost their jobs because the world's biggest dork predicted we'd wanna put on VR headsets and attend work meetings as floating cartoon characters. the theme of 2022 thus far is that billionaires are mostly idiots who got lucky”.

Under the company’s settlement with the FTC, Twitter is required to perform privacy reviews before it makes any changes to its products. But in a letter posted to Slack by an attorney on the company’s privacy team and reported by the Verge, the author says that they heard the company’s head of legal, Alex Spiro, “say that Elon is willing to take on a huge amount of risk in relation to this company and its users, because ‘Elon puts rockets into space, he’s not afraid of the FTC.’” The company’s legal team is now asking engineers to “self-certify” that their features comply with FTC rules and privacy standards, according to the Verge.

twitter is gonna go bust or get whacked by the FTC within the year.

I'm not really at the point where I want to commute with current VR tech. Most meetings can be done on a messenger service or a few short emails. Also, screw long trips out for basically nothing, and screw video calls with people who are probably in their underpants below keyboard level.

re: telecommuting, etc. - FWP: handshakes need to finally go away for good. There is nothing redeeming about two people competing to see who flinches last at having their hand bones crushed together. Each wondering if the other bothered to wash their hands after using the restroom. I'd much rather skip that and exchange business cards or something if there absolutely must be a ritual.

People who object to the decline of the handshake should find more private avenues upon which to feel the texture of each other's skin.

Ha ha so bitter.
My current company has all that, isolation chairs, video games in the Avengers room, ping-pong league, table football, regular free lunches, cakes etc.

As a drug-addled narcissist yourself I'd have thought you'd have seen a lot of yourself in Musk.

Hannibal Lecter ate people. Turns out anyway that Musk isn't that clever.

I should clarify anyway that there should be performance returns on pampering employees. It has to be sustainable, after all. Zeek's hypothetical makes sense in that respect. That said, you can often find rec room kit for free online. All you need is a truck and a spare room to put it all in. Passed up a lot of good pool tables because of a lack of space.

My company even had free drinks until someone began pilfering entire cases at a time. Like, chill out there, master thief. It's just some powerade.

The bankers are pissed, they want 70cents on the dollar for the debt and can only get 60 cents. they got fucked hard.

Saudis and Qatari's obvviously aren't in it for the money. CZ/Binance already got the value of the investment by wiping out one rival and about to take out another platform.

why am i bitter about project managers? i’ve done it myself and could have taken a career route down that way. it’s a meme that millennials at these big tech companies are showered with money and don’t produce much. meta is laying off 11,000 people, which would suggest there’s a bit of bloat in the organisation.

all sorts of people take drugs. musk seems to be the sort who gets really into right-wing politics and creepy ideas about race, reproduction, the future of society, etc. a bit like you, only he has been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. what’s your excuse?

‘great genius’ lmfao. you really are a dweeb. fanboying over a middle-aged narcissist. you’re a crushed little manlet and your idol has hair plugs. sad!

i think most companies offer free catering or at least hot drinks to their employees. it’s in their interest to have caffeinated and focused workers. well worth the occasional 15 minute break and water cooler chat.

the funny thing is that dilbert presents himself as an investment maestro and also a green warrior … but apparently, even though he has enough money to ‘live on for 50 years’, he drives in his highly wasteful personal vehicle to the office every day for ‘free coffee’. what a perq for a millionaire! free instant coffee all day! he must be saving at least $20 AUD a month. and only the planet has to pay for his high-emitting lifestyle!
