Well they should.
avocados are dirt cheap now and farmers are begging. why dont you support aussie farmers.

Relatively cheap here too. No more going out of my way to buy a sack of avocados than a lot of other produce. You could eat avocado toast every day for pennies on the café-dollar if you just make it yourself.

Avocados are so cheap in the U.S. because of Mexican slave labor and the ability of well armed drug cartels to negotiate labor cost.

I think an overwhelming most avocados in America are grown (massively inefficiently) in California.

Tell me more about your love of coffee. Do you ensure your chocolates are fairly sourced? What are the animal QoL and labor standards like for your nuggie farms?

The banana has a sordid history as well.

I wasn't complaining about the cartel infiltration of the avocado industry. I wish a well armed militia could negotiate a better contract for me. I am sure Ken would be happy with if the cartels could kidnap his boss and convince him to let his stay. I swore that was a 90s movie.

My boss loves me. She's a huge part of the reason I took this job in the first place.

I have all the backing I need from the executive management team within my company. I just received a raise in April and a retention bonus in July. They love me!

The problem is the PE group that owns us. They literally only care about the metrics they force us to run the company by. Sales per head, EBITDA, etc.

Clark Griswald was able to negotiate better compensation when his brother kidnapped the boss on his behalf.

so truss's great cost-of-living rescue plan genuinely does seem to involve taking a loan of near-£100bn and paying it straight to the CEOs and shareholders of the energy companies. no real efforts to radically change the current energy cap – in fact, the current policy benefits the already wealthy (i.e. her tory base) who are surely the least bothered about the current setting of the cap.

no windfall tax on the companies, no attempts to bring them in line or to make substantive changes. so this scenario could repeat for the next 2–3 winters, as long as global and market instability continues. brilliant. £150bn+ spaffed straight up the wall and 20 years of debt repayments for the UK taxpayers. there's return on investment!

for £100bn's worth of investment in solar/wind we could fully power ~10 million homes. the tory's version of the 'green revolution' seems to revolve around keeping one ear permanently cocked to energy industry lobbyists and the rotating door to post-ministerial board positions, and wasting immense amounts of money being beholden to a neoliberal orthodoxy that cracked over 10 years ago.

she's also seriously claiming that tax cuts for the rich will help deliver the entire economy out of the recessionary crisis. you just can't make shit up. we've been sold this line by neoliberals since the days of thatcher and we're still waiting to see the supposed collective rewards of letting people skip off into the horizon with record profits/bonuses and low tax. you really have to be impressively stupid to insist that it's going to deliver results this time.

What exactly is her plan? A big U.S. style tax or subsidies for gas companies? Can they rush reopening the coal mines?

she is going to effectively freeze the spiralling cost of gas/energy and take out a £120 bn loan in order to pay the difference/subsidise the companies.

they are guaranteeing the financing of private energy companies, which are posting record profits, using long-term government loans.

the wisdom of the market wins again.

Price caps cause shortages. I understand they hope to make up the difference to the companies but I expect the oil companies will take the subsidies and also export energy to markets where they make better profits.

Do people expect Boris to make a comeback. I believe they are sending this lady off the glass cliff.

i think boris expects himself to make a comeback. lots of his political idols had some 'wilderness years', after all. perish the thought.

it's hard to think of a worse PM/cabinet in all of modern british history. we're 12 years into the tory rule now, post-brexit, and all the decency and brains have long vacated the building. she has just formed a government out of the very worst hangers-on. our new home secretary has only recently entered political life after a very politicised appointment as one of the dumbest attorney-generals we have ever seen. rees-mogg, not the sharpest knife in the edwardian family silver, has been appointed as the business secretary; he's a climate-change denier. it's astonishing how slow truss and her team are.

the first PMQs were a total lol. truss has no states(wo)manlike skills for rhetoric. just repeating herself endlessly and stuttering. even for first time nerves, this is not promising. she genuinely seems a bit thick.

I heard a surprise rant the other day about "what does UK think it's doing getting rid of Boris, now they have this horrible person" followed by much drooling over how Boris was a *checks notes* "crackerjack administrator" ("yes he is, that's what I've read!"). Sure, tell me more about Carlson or whatever blog you follow and prefer over the AP you read so you can claim balance.

omg......

They were originally talking about Ukraine before the topic randomly and jarringly shifted to Boris.

Pretty much looks like this.

Britain is past Peak Derp and now locked into the Great Derpening, the endgame could be 100 or 1000 years away.

Best of luck chaps, let us know how it works out.

yes, we get it, you saw idiocracy once and thought it replaced 25 years of reading books and actually developing analytical skills.

i swear you are like a reddit starter kit made out of New Atheism sub-dawkins, quasi-darwinian bullshit and this 'everyone is dumb' cant.

and you wonder why people call you maladjusted? you have the outlook of a 15-year-old.

Whats funny is that it is your highly educated and well-read heroes from the top schools, top universities and most worthy courses who have delivered Britain into disaster after disaster and are determined to worsen it.

People like Boris Johnson don't strike me as particularly erudite philologists. Imagine comparing all pilots with George W. Bush, who SuPpOsEdLy got into pilot school by scoring in the 25th percentile.

Seems like an insane counter-offensive at Kharkiv right now. A lot of Russians could be cut off and picked off one by one.

The joke among the pro-Ukraine side is that the Russians were lured to defend Kherson and left the Kharkiv front undefended. Probably half right. The Russians are stretched along the front and the Ukrainians are still fully mobilized. They had the political power and lend lease to do it.

boris johnson isn’t well read. i don’t know how many times i have to tell you that actual classicists find him a phoney and a cringe.

memorising a few latin phrases from your Eton books isn’t being ‘well read’, i’m sorry. it might impress that impression on you because your own reading is non-existent.

johnson fancies himself as a great statesman and a great historian and a great writer. but his shambolic books, vanity projects, were universally rinsed by historians and critics in the review pages of the press.

literally nobody of any qualification or credential rates him in these matters. the idea that johnson is a ‘well read’ exemplar of the humanities is totally moronic.
