Your thoughts, insights, and musings on this matter intrigue me

a religion is not the same thing as a comic book superhero franchise.

that biblical figures are mythopoeic and various types of fiction also use myth in their world building ... is not a ground-breaking observation, dilbert.

tolkien's silmarillion is just the same as genesis!!!!! he establishes a creation myth!!!!

you're a smart guy, sharpen up.

edgy opinion, bro.

you just spent 4 posts sounding like an edgy teenager ranting about religion in response to ... observations that there are endless, bad, derivative franchises/sequels on TV and in cinemas thesedays.

you do know that you seem a bit cracked sometimes, right?

Isn't this the dilbertian train of thought that points to the cave drawings of ancient man as proof positive of some grand furry heritage.

The Scarlet Pimpernel and Hugo Hercules and serialized John Carter were wee-1900s, early prototypes of the modern superhero fiction genre.

re: lotr stuff, first episode was alright. A writer I chance-encountered on forbes said they expected it to be an expensive fan-fiction and were going to try and enjoy it as such. I'm getting that vibe on first impressions, and it didn't bother me either. I don't think I would have the patience to sit through thousands of years of exhaustive, fictional history and incomplete meanderings without some time compression, interesting events out of place, and certain creative liberties. Might be a good test for a self-proclaimed Tolkien nerd to see what all they can pick out.

Very TV-showish with a cliff hanger already, but it wouldn't really be Middle Earth without that would it.

IRT one of my previous, Amazon's whole front page has transmogrified into this series along with a bunch of *checks notes* merch. Still weird that I barely saw mention of it there until it was already out, like what the heck. Would love to see the bullet points on that.

The new GoT is doing well in ratings so far. The one criticism I have heard from viewers is that it is bland and there is nobody to root for.

The one issue I have is that nothing in the show matters because we know 176 years from now they all get overthrown anyway.

I thought GoT could do no wrong. You were really defensive of it back in the day, iirc.

I said the show creators did a wonderful job adapting the bush league novels to the television. They cleaned up a lot of stuff that sounded dumb in the books. They screwed up when they went past the books and rushed things in order to make some Star Wars films.

GoT was dumb before season 7 was a twinkle in a capitalist's eye.

I haven't finished this video yet but this guy splits the show into three parts.  1 to 4 is a masterpiece. 5-6 starts to go off the rails. 7-8 collapse.

probably right

The Targaryens just aren't really that interesting to me. Kind of weird considering it should be an allure in a fantasy series to have a bunch of fire-proof people who ride dragons, and along comes a prequel series that Tells Us More.

I would have probably watched a show about the Andal conquest of Westeros, as far from the events in the previous series as it's reasonable to get.

What about modern Westeros? How screwed up of a country would that be in the modern era? Would there still be ambiguous magic? White Walkers online? Power is cut off because because they didn't winterize their pipelines. Some long lost Targaryen could find out about themselves in a factory fire where the only exit is blocked off, and become a powerful union leader bent on cramming workers' rights down the country's throat.

Maybe a communist revolution. With a communist dragon.

comic books have many cultural antecedents. they were pulpy and disposable entertainments, of course they didn't emerge out of the void through some herculean act of creative imagination. they continued and re-presented lots of literary and cultural trends. that's fine.

but to argue that, ipso facto, a comic book universe is on a par with a 2000-year-old belief system, by which billions of people structure their lives and believe in fundamentally, with convictions of life and death, and with which they're helped to navigate all of life's great emotional and spiritual challenges ... makes you seem totally cracked.

equating edward norton's the hulk with moses makes you sound like a 14-year-old who just read dawkins. it's lame and it's sad and it's weak piss. dilbert in a nutshell.

This is what is sad:

a 2000-year-old belief system, billions of people structure their lives and believe in fundamentally, with convictions of life and death, and with which they're helped to navigate all of life's great emotional and spiritual challenges
The world would be a better place if people made their decisions according to the philosophy of the X-Men, the Avengers, the Ring Fellowship, anything really would be better than religion.

it really doesn’t matter and you are pathetically irrelevant.

religion for most people is simply a way of life and a positive structuring force. they don’t spend their time agonising over the empirical veracity of Moses life.

ironically you get more wound up about biblical myths, like the jews supposed travails in egypt, than most practicing religious folk. you really should have studied theology. it occupies a lot of space in your worrisome dome.

as a secular person without religion you use dubiously ‘scientific’ rationales, as a neat substitution of untested and unverified religious faith, to justify ugly social attitudes. racism, sexism, pet mis- hobbies of all stripes. you are evidently unhappy and full of bitterness and scorn for other peoples and other lifestyles (the outsider and counterculture aspects of comics has obviously passed you by; how ironic that you reference x-men, a fictional universe from which you’ve clearly taken no message). your nerdy and maladjusted enthusiasm for children’s entertainments and corporate merchandise trains hasn’t made you any more empathic or understanding of fellow human beings.

your quack scientific ‘rigour’ has really not enriched your life. i’d rather have a humble christian for a neighbour than a person who dunks on refugees and is racist about indians tbh.

human beings structure and lead their lives according to all sorts of irrational thinking. not everything is scrutinised and laid out in pellucid logical clarity.

if you had any powers of self-examination, or weren't a bitter ingrown little man, you'd realise you have a few such irrational prejudices yourself.

erm your entire political outlook is structured on pseudo-scientific racialist thinking.

your average person with faith isn't a zealot, or even really an evangelical. it's a private matter in most democratic societies.

your attitudes seem genuinely toxic. it wouldn't surprise me if they have more real-world effects on your social and emotional life than a religious person's faith.

Looking forward to the next religion-driven war.
yeah, secular societies never go to war. we're all-so-reasonable. derp derpington.

But you engineered parts for the military, and profit from oil.

Anyway, "the philosophy of the X-Men, Avengers," etc. in what limited capacity those are didn't spawn from nothing, re: uzique's mention of antecedents which I would've brought up in my own post had we not already been over this.

Even now the 'politics' of comic book characters parallel real-world changes. X-Men are regarded as allegorical for real-world issues. A mutant commits suicide because they can't take life "outed" as a mutant. Or simply ejected from their home and community to go live out on the street. Gee, I wonder where else we see that?

Didn't Superman give a speech against racism once? Or was that Captain America? What would they think of your take on Indians? In what regard would Professor X hold your stance on transgender educators?
