japan has quite a pedigree for assassinating political leaders in very public and spectacular ways.

still, quite a wild thought. their longest-serving ever PM just got shot to death in the back by a person with a sawn-off. very light security detail.

Hell, I clicked on New Posts thinking it'd be about James Caan, then I was like, oh, makes sense for ol' Shinzo, but this turn of events was even more crazy.

Fair. In my defense, I have no point of reference for how old he actually is, nor many of the world leaders of the 2010s.

i know what you mean, it does feel like he was around forever. he seemed like an old eminence even in the bush–blair years.

how ironic that the nationalist who aggressively wanted to rearm pacifist japan got killed by someone with a team fortress 2 scout meme weapon … because none of his security knew what a shooter situation was.

Cops were able to take this maniac in alive, yet will draw a gun on a person who bought a pack of mentos because they didn't see the transaction. Crazy.

There was a perfectly legal fatwa in place, we have to respect that, thats how multiculturalism works.

I thought people were still making too big of deal about the fatwa thing until it turns out that it was still a real threat.

Between this and Abe's assassination, we might get one more checks notes religious assassination coming up. Everything happens in 3s.

Its been going on a while, umpteen people have already been killed or injured for Rushdie's moronic ego.

Violence, assassinations, and attempted murders
Hitoshi Igarashi, Rushdie's Japanese translator, was found by a cleaning lady, stabbed to death on 13 July 1991 on the college campus where he taught near Tokyo. Ten days prior to Igarashi's killing, Rushdie's Italian translator Ettore Capriolo was seriously injured by an attacker at his home in Milan by being stabbed multiple times on 3 July 1991.[19] William Nygaard, the Norwegian publisher of The Satanic Verses, was critically injured by being shot three times in the back by an assailant on 11 October 1993 in Oslo. Nygaard survived, but spent months in the hospital recovering. The book's Turkish translator Aziz Nesin was the intended target of a mob of arsonists who set fire to the Madimak Hotel after Friday prayers on 2 July 1993 in Sivas, Turkey, killing 37 people, mostly Alevi scholars, poets and musicians. Nesin escaped death when the fundamentalist mob failed to recognize him early in the attack. Known as the Sivas massacre, it is remembered by Alevi Turks who gather in Sivas annually and hold silent marches, commemorations and vigils for the slain.

just like clockwork. so predictable.

being anti-racist and believing in kindness and respect for all people, regardless of skin colour or creed … is not tantamount to defending extremism.

lone zanies committing acts of violence don’t rubbish the concept of multiculturalism. you sound completely and utterly bent.

The fatwa was issued by the President of Iran, just like Obama, Trump and Biden issued fatwas and sent the military to kill people.
Its hardly extremism.

The problem is the people you're promoting don't hold the same views as you.
They'll take the advantage of preferential treatment and use it against you.

On topic:
Salman Rushdie writing the satanic verses is as stupid as this guy.

I mean sure freedom of speech blah blah blah but what is being achieved really?
I wonder if that guy made it.

iran is a fundamentalist theocracy, i don’t know if you noticed.

only an extremist ideologue would try to assassinate someone over a novel or some cartoons.

this isn’t representative of average muslims. do you really think billions of human beings are prepared to murder someone in response to taking offence?

as i said, you sound bent. go and talk to an actual muslim.

this post is just so funny.

in one paragraph you fearmonger about ‘those people’.

in the next you basically condone artistic censorship and curbing free thinking. you sound an awful lot like ‘those people’ you scorn so much.

the satanic verses is art. maybe bad art, maybe good art; that’s up for debate. but i prefer living in a society where someone can create works and not be punished for it. weird how you basically want to muzzle writers but at she same time decry ‘backwards’ fundie ideology.

have you ever considered that maybe you’re just a bit of a fash?
