If most businesses are doing fine they can subsidise the ones which depend on tourists.

Are we agreed we can nuke China at least?

lol. amazing. so your solution is no solution at all. you're advocating for a turn to widespread redistributive socialism as a 'solution' to covid. because closing borders entirely for 5 years, making people comply with endless and ineffectual lockdowns for eternity, and encouraging businesses to start fessing up higher tax rates to subsidize half the furloughed economy ... are just so much more feasible than promoting vaccines+social distancing+masking up.

you just can't make this shit up. stick to your lane making periscopes, to be honest.

If it had been done properly it should have been three months, six months tops.

If the Chinese hadn't lied and been responsible it would have been 0 months.

this is your perpetual refrain. remember when i said above that you've had nothing new to contribute on this topic since 18 months ago?

'if only this had never happened in the first place' ... this is your godrace engineer 'solution' to the crisis? moaning over spilt milk? sorry, that's not a policy.

i don't know if you've noticed dilbert, but businesses don't like paying higher tax rates. in fact, they go to great lengths to avoid them. one of the great characteristics of our current epoch is that multinationals and nation-leading corporations both expend a huge amount of effort to park their proceeds offshore. tax avoidance is the global game. your casual remark that 'profitable businesses can subsidize the ones affected by tourism' is fatuous in the extreme. nevermind that the sectors affected by covid shutdowns are much more numerous than merely tourism or hospitality. we've been here before. didn't your entire university sector almost fall over in the first year's fallout?

i don't know if you've also noticed, dilbert, but on a behavioural level, most regular people, with regular jobs, regular social lives, regular families, etc, – and bear with me here because i know that everything about your situation is most certainly irregular – most people were fed up with compliance. there is a behavioural limit after which people start to fadge and skip on observing the rules. that's human. you have to factor that fried and burnt out element into any prospective 'engineering know-it-all' fix you supposedly have. people just aren't going to follow it with perfect obedience or compliance. that means you're going to have clusters and covid outbreaks. and that means you need to be realistic about 'zero covid'. which you are not.

really you are hopeless. hopeless.

Because of tax avoidance we must let a pandemic kill people.

Genius plan, you should be a strategist.

There was little need for compliance, we pretty well didn't have any covid here.

no, i didn't make that inference at all. that's your pathetic logical fallacy.

i said your proposal to make society pivot, in short order, to a socialist model in which every business starts paying greatly increased tax rates to furlough 1/3rd the working population, is grossly impractical compared to the current recommended epidemiological picture.

this is a human problem and you seem, in your autistic engineering way, singularly incapable of grasping the human dimension. businesses and people have their own interests and their own stakes in this situation, and are not going to be shuffled around to comply like variables on a screen. you're not balancing an equation, dilbert.

the only way to achieve zero covid in your proposal is to have (a) perfect human compliance, which is a practical impossibility at this point, after 3+ years of fatigue and stress; and (b) for society to suddenly pivot to a drastically new tax regime in which everyone plays (and pays) their part, which is also practically unlikely given the vast amount of vested interests in the political+business status quo.

keep your specious logical fallacies to yourself. you are being dumb to an absurd degree.

If 1/3rd of an economy depends on tourism its not really an economy, its a house of cards.

dilbert, the world isn't australia.

what worked for 1.7 million people in SA isn't exportable to the world. it's not even exportable to oceania.

we have been over this so many fucking times.

it's not ONLY tourism that's affected by zero covid, is it? look at the example of china today. they have had borders closed to tourists for THREE YEARS. do you think the people rioting in their streets and trying to escape their apartments on ropes of bedding are disaffected tour guides? you muppet. you don't achieve ZERO COVID cases in a population merely by closing the borders. what are you going to do about the high rates of community transmission in australia? that won't affect any business sectors other than tourism, really?

you are being so fucking dumb.

We didn't have high rates of community transmission in the bulk of australia for two years.

it wasn't tourists who were responsible for quarantine escapes, though, was it?

we have established, in countless examples, that delta+ variants are monumentally difficult to control and screen effectively.

it was australian citizens, or her migrant workforce at least, who introduced covid to the community. not holiday-makers and tourists.

it's been illicit trade and movement of labour which has reintroduced covid to china, despite her officially closed borders. not tourists.

you are being obtuse to an n'th degree.

you're really not doing your 'engineers are master solution-makers' thing any credence. you are hopeless.

If everyone had the discipline of engineers this would have been a doddle.

make it stooop

One of my stem professors was literally, morbidly obese. "The discipline of engineers." I'm not judging him specifically because I don't know if there was some other underlying issue, but engineers have plenty of human problems.

You, still going to restaurants during covid, ordering springs from halfway across the planet in the midst of your anti-flight mantras.

lmao. what you mean to say is that if everyone didn't have a life like you, then it would be no problem.

unfortunately many people have commitments – work, family, social or otherwise – which means they do need to go out and interact with the outside world. occasionally even by crossing borders, as is a perfectly reasonable expectation in an era of migrant workforces and multinational capital.

nobody is surprised that you're fine with the prospects of sitting inside for 5 years with little social contact, or, as you like to call it, "partying". this doesn't make you normal or a model worth emulating, however.

Anyone remember this guy who did the slightly homoerotic "hunt the gays down at Target stores" video?

GOP operative wants LGBTQ community put in “isolation camps for their own protection” (the word "hunt" specifically comes up again)

Whyever are any of these people compared to nazis?

There is a 100% chance that 5-10 years from now, news stories come out about that guy having a ton of sex with dudes. He's clearly one of the people that's so ANTI-gay because he's gay himself
