To your previous, I don't think felons should lose voting rights. While incarcerated, debatable (Maine and Vermont dgaf), but when you're back in society, a member of the community, paying taxes, etc., it shouldn't be a thing. Neither of our states do this. Looking it up, it only applies for certain felonies in Tennessee. I guess homelessness must be up there with whatever other horrible crimes that implies. Very 'murica vibe. Police will come and shoot you if you're poor, as the reductive.

Saw an article talking about a teacher retiring about 52 years of teaching. The article by some mainstream news outlet was about how amazing it is he stood teaching for 52 years.

It is deplorable that this guy was holding onto his position that long. How many aspiring teachers were held up because this guy refused to retire? The guy was in his 70's making the salary of two teachers meanwhile he is old enough to remember what it is like to protest the Vietnam War.

There are two people in their 70's doing that in my school. A guidance counselor and a French teacher. Both are so old they have trouble walking. Both are making well over $100,000 and holding up things up for others.

The old lady French teacher is so old she uses a walker/cart to carry things around. She gets up the stairs one at a time with her cart. I used to offer to help her when I see her but now I just walk around her. I can't care anymore.

Once again I see that you're mad when people make more money than you. Quibbling over 5 and 6 figures, like I mentioned before. There are memes about that.

Amazon boxes don't figure much into my life. I'm on like three or four orders a year and most of those are shipped to an indoor locker where they're usually in much better condition. I don't really grab collectory books there anymore either so it doesn't bother me when mass market whatever shows up with a head start on shelf wear. It would be totally reasonable for me to swap Prime for Costco membership at this point. A lot of the stuff I want to watch on PV I still have to pay for anyway.

I think it's nice that there are some jobs where you can expect to earn more for having worked a position for a long period of time. Not everyone gets that. Instead of being mad at those people, why not focus your energies at being annoyed that people have to work regular jobs well beyond what was traditional retirement age.

We get pensions after 20 years. They are well past retirement age. I am not yelling at the cashier for being too old.

You do realize that the same will happen to millennials and zoomers right? "Get out of the workforce and go die responsibly of exposure in the woods or something." Meanwhile, Bezos is dismantling landmark bridges for the sake of his yacht.

Isn't there overcrowding in classrooms?

Again, quibbling over 5/6 figures, already mentioned that 3 times. Meanwhile people making exponentially more laughing at all of us. Good on you for pushing your way past an old person scaling some stairs though.

We could retire the old lady, who literally looks like the Hunchback of Notre Dame, and hire two new young teachers in her in place. Do you think the old lady is teaching French to the best of her ability? I am not sure if she can even hear well since I spoke to her today. I didn't tell her to get out of the way when I was speaking to her.

I didn't develop this idea on my own regarding retiring the two 70 year old's. A senior teacher who is nearing his retirement pointed out how messed up it is that you have these 70 year old's holding onto their spots, classrooms, and extracurriculars when they should take their pension and go to Florida.

Fire the old person so you can hire several younger people at a piddling wage, got it. It's all their fault, after all.

Contracting does this, you know. I thought you talked up how superior the public sector was. Will you not rest until your teaching job is more like the mechanic's shop?

it's the same situations in most business organisations, to be honest, including academia (where seniority is perhaps more germane and important than in high-school education; at least academia has invented emeritus chairs to give the real oldies a quiet seat to sit in).

as the age of retirement has inevitably crept up, organisations haven't restructured or accommodated for this. so you get middle-managers who have been occupying their rung for 2x as long as its really useful. they're not learning anything new; they're probably complacent and bored in their jobs, looking to their pension fund only and merely 'turning up'. meanwhile the newer waves of graduates are more educated than ever before, on average, and chronically underemployed under the boomers who are clinging like dear life to their emoluments.

Yes, well, if a person can't perform at their job or refuses to stay updated, then sure. If it's just because they're 65 and for no other reason, well, Mac's no paragon either. I have numerous anecdotes from my and adjacent fields of younger replacements being (still underpaid) downgrades. More people to complete the replaced person's job, and more clumsily, even after a year or two of settling in. Hardly something to celebrate imo.

Pushing people out of especially technical jobs, you lose a lot of expertise on old/damaged/obsolete equipment, hardware, systems, and in some cases working relationships with clients. I would rather delegate a computer network, a work truck, job site, or property to a person who's been in their business for 20 years (or in at least a supervisory position) than an average 20yo tech college graduate who decides the solution is to format all your hard drives or conclude that a $30 fix is actually a $3000 part swap.

This isn't to say that sometimes the older people, including the ones above, aren't ever problematic or intractable. Or that older people hanging onto jobs longer than they have to (or because they have no other choice) aren't sometimes making it hard for (competent) younger people to find employment.

Beyond about 5 years in any job people can do it in their sleep.

After that point they use their excess energy to

- improve things

or

- cause trouble, sometimes in a passive way like blocking any improvement

Without strong management its usually the second.

I think I'm going to pick a fight with the miserable bastard who deleted a swathe of 'how to' guides for the company systems because "you can just ask someone". Pretty hard when the workforce has turned over twice and no-one knows except him.

Florida is one of the last states I'd want to retire to. Why would I skip out on a beautiful Pacific Northwest to go leather myself the meme land of giant mosquitos, swamp ass, flakka zombies, and worst of all Ron DeSantis?

Cool people retire to Alaska and then pose in the snow like Jack Nicholson in their last moments.
