Here's hoping they don't create an ebb and flow of up and downsizing phones over the decades. I did lament when they started getting bigger and bigger for people chasing screen size (as a person who doesn't consume much content on their phone), trading off something that was lightweight, accessible, and fit nicely in most pockets.

bad news, as it sounds like next year they’re axing the mini already. poorest selling version despite the rave reviews.

the ultimate limitation is battery life. people are used to being on their phones all day for 8-12 hours a day. it’s a radically different use-case to the smartphones of a decade ago.

buying an iphone mini effectively takes me back to using phones for messages and essential business and that’s it. the screen size is perfectly fine for everything.

there’s additional battery packs available but meh.  cutting down on endless feed scrolling sounds good to me.

Every time my work phone is replaced, it's with a bigger screen. I barely use any of the new features that come alone. I text, make phone calls, (sometimes) take notes, or actually take a photograph of an email because I cba to open the file transfer app or log in on the go. More rarely play music from youtube or read a chapter out of an ebook. I spend enough time on my computer. I don't need to spend the rest of it on my phone.

My ideal personal phone has tactile buttons and a flipscreen. Those were phones, back when I could dial someone on the road without taking my hands off of it or issuing dorky spaceman commands to it while alone in the car.

I don't like mixing the depression medication that I am on (just like Larssen). So I got this safe to keep me from getting to it during the work week.

On the one hand it is sad it comes to this but on the other hand it is the responsible thing to do to balance my habits.

It's amazing that society and technology have come to a point where we have electronic timeout jars for cellphones. Get a lock box for your TV dinners and put the key to it in one of those bins. Practice making better food. Any meds you're on could only work better if they're not having to combat a brain dampening diet.

Looking at the prices of PC parts now compared to when I bought them in March 2020 hurts my heart a little. Everything is half the price it used to be. I understand this is how tech pricing used to work before cryptocurrency made everything crazy.

supply chain issues were a much bigger part of the pricing hike tbh. crypto has been out of the reach of your average home-GPU-farm guy for years already. especially mining bitcoin or ethereum. you now need vast facilities to even break even doing that stuff.

What are the best earbuds? I want Apple Airpod Pro but I don't own an iphone and am not sure if I would get all the features. I really don't want an iPhone and will not buy one under any circumstances.

I am just going to go with the Google line of Smart watches and ear buds when they are released. I really don't want to switch away from Android phones. I also really like my Google Pixel and will probably stick with that line of stuff.

wireless earbuds are rubbish unless you are really attracted by the wireless phone/handset capabilities, incl. incorporation with smart watches too.

the idea of buying a specific phone or ecosystem to access the ear buds is crazy. definitely stick with what you have. the ear buds are overhyped status-symbol nonsense. remember when the plain white apple earbuds were 'cool' too? those things were worth like $6 and sounded like listening to a concert being played by ants inside a tin can.

I decided to get the Samsung ones since I wouldn't be able to use all the features of the Apple ones without the iphone.

I don't like the way my ear holds or is supposed to hold the plugs. They are not that loud. I ordered the Galaxy Buds Pro. I checked reviews and apparently they hold into the ear better.

I really like the galaxy pro headphones. I am wearing them right now. Loud and fit in the ear really well.

I highly recommend the galaxy pro if you own an android. Just don't get the white ones.

Is anybody into retro handhelds?

I've been diving into them lately and it seems like there's about a million options at or below $150 and they can all play up to some N64 titles. With so many good games from arcades to NES to SNES etc etc it seems like $150 for hours of mindless commuting entertainment isn't a bad purchase.

I know full well that I may want to get into N64 and Gamecube games shortly thereafter though so I think I've narrowed down the best choices to:

Retroid Pocket 2+ for the thousands of games 1997 and prior

Ayn Odin for N64/Gamecube/PS2/DS. Evidently even some Wii games? Can't imagine that without a wii controller they'd pack the same punch...

Honorable mention to the Anbernic RG351M/P, Miyoo Mini, etc

A few years back I bought a $20 thing on Amazon that looked like a PSP but could be filled with NES, SNES, GB, and Sega roms. Super cool. I can only imagine things have gotten better.

Probably should just get a Switch though. A lot of rose tinted glasses about retro games.

I have a few RPi I've converted, but not handheld. I don't like spending time looking at a small screen. I know retropie used to have trouble supporting the button configurations on n64 controllers but it's been since ironed out

Yeah definitely better, but that's the idea - tons of fun games for some nostalgic fun and for not a ridiculous price tag.

Ditto the Pi > Retro Pi. I still even have it along with a SNES-USB controller. It's definitely cool but feels like it could be just as fun on a smaller screen and 10x more fun if portal, hence here I am in the market. And it looks like I share the same sentiment as millions of others since the market is exploding.

I hadn't heard the n64 was worked out though - at least not on the Pis. I thought their cpu wasnt strong enough to run those.

After using the Galaxy Pros for a few days I have to say that I am very happy with them. If you are thinking of ear buds, you should buy these.

yeah solid pair of earbuds that! you chose well. sorry i missed your whatspp chats about possible replacements.

i'm going back to the audiophile shop in gangnam this week, when the monsoon rains subside, to replace the cable on my IEMs. i think wearing them for a year with mask+glasses has fucked with the connectors a bit and worn the cable out fast. intermittent sound from constant tension and tangles with the stupid mask situation. luckily my last cable came with a 12 months warranty.

check and register any warranty info you may get with those earphones, dauntless. most quality earphone manufacturers have good after-care packages.

btw, i love this country.

Oh boy. My home isn't too bad. Work though is utter trash. 30Mbps down, 70 up. That's probably for the whole place too. If several people are on a teams call it goes to 100p very quickly

this internet was practically thrown in as a freebie with my apartment. i literally don’t even pay for it. i think the bill is like $7 a month. my landlord just covers it as a gratuity.

it also includes 100+ channels of korean cable and an ‘egg’ device i can take with me anywhere, and use as a tether to use their high-speed network on public wifi/5g hubs. i can work using ‘my wifi’ in a riverside park. 100mbps down/up, on a laptop with a dongle … in the park. not a single fibre cable or wired connection in sight.

I thought the word "dongle" was funny in the 1990s and still sometimes snigger at it today.

the USB-C only generation of macbooks made everyone very, very familiar with the word 'dongle'. officially the era of the dongle-verse.

LMAO Do you know how much energy data centres and communication networks consume?
