And in a lot of circumstances it was no big deal.
Quarantine cost a bit but then it seems no-one paid it.

i'm sorry but you're knowingly being very blasé about the fact that, for all practical intents and purposes, a huge cohort of aussies were effectively locked out of their own country for 2+ years. that's not a 'winning' strategy.

china similarly has sacrificed so much over the last few years and now seems to be poised to throw all of their headway out of the window. know why? because VACCINES are by FAR the best tool at protecting your population and ensuring the running of day-to-day society. china's 'zero covid' shit hasn't been backed up with effective vaccination drives. imagine being 2.5+ years into a pandemic and still dangling over a precipice of mass death and popular revolt, because you fucked up the vaccines.

but no! let's stress lockdowns and medieval city quarantines! they are totally effective!

Most of the Aussies 'stranded' abroad were living and working and had been for years and decades.

A lot of the rest were Indians who did the bare minimum to get PR and went back to India, then suddenly realised they wanted to be Australian as did all their relatives.

Would I be considered a Brit 'stranded' in Australia, or Rishi Sunak, his wife, children and both sets of parents Americans 'stranded' in Britain?
Probably not is my guess.

Not reaching at all.

Its simply unrealistic to repatriate ~1m people in a short space of time during a pandemic.

Britain couldn't have done it and I don't suppose anyone in Britain would have shed a tear if I'd wailed about not having a charter jet and free quarantine  laid on instantly for me, my Thai bride and her parents having not paid tax there for nearly two decades.

yeah it's not like the current government want to practically remove all rights of citizenships either right?

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-n … -nationals

On Wednesday Donaghue argued that the parliament should have the power to define “aliens”, unless it seeks to exclude people who “could not possibly answer that description”, such as people born in Australia.

Justice James Edelman asked if this meant that parliament could define a person born overseas with dual citizenship due to an Australian parent or grandparent who had “lived in Australia as a citizen for 60 years, served in the military, voted, and fulfilled every civic duty” as an alien.

Donaghue said this was an “extreme example” that was politically “unlikely” but, yes, parliament would have that power – subject to one qualification, that it may not be fair to be ejected from the Australian polity if it was not possible to renounce foreign citizenship.
why would the government want powers to deport citizens?

NSW owed more than $175 million in unpaid COVID-19 hotel quarantine fees
Posted November 14, 2021

Returned travellers and state and territory governments owe New South Wales more than $175 million in unpaid hotel quarantine fees.

Figures from Revenue NSW show out of the 142,728 invoices issued as of November 11, with 62,426 having been paid and 65,408 still outstanding — amounting to $110.3 million.

Is there some legal difference between 'owing' and 'not paid'?

Find some more recent numbers.

OK, so more than half the people who went through hotel quarantine are still owing the money which they haven't paid, and it adds up to $175m

as of 6 months ago, i think the numbers might be updated by EOFY but then again 175 mil is a small price to pay to keep hotel quarantine running all things considered.

Got back from the bachelor party trip and was talking to a friend who is a doctor in Mac's neck of the woods. Apparently his wife got really fucked up with fear of Covid and anti-Asian crime reporting in the NY area news that she barely leaves the house anymore. Got worse when she got prego and now they have a new baby she's afraid of getting sick, somehow. She generally doesn't even go downstairs to get mail/packages in their apartment so there was a whole kerfuffle about my friend maybe having a $200 pair of shoes stolen.

Same with the hate crimes - I'm sure it's worse than I'd expect since I'm also not the targeted group, but she's afraid of being out in public because of seeing reported all the time. It kinda sounds like she just was watching doomerist local news for the longest time and needs a bit of deprogramming. My friend seemed a bit resigned to it, but he's taken on an awful lot of the burden there.

Well living with covid has worked out really well, only ~4000 excess deaths compared with last year and we're not even half way through the year.

https://i.imgur.com/2B1eTUp.png

Meanwhile China is persisting with zero covid.

Either they're nothing like as smart as mega-brane uziq, or maybe they know something we don't.
Having studied the virus for about a decade, re-engineered the virus and then released it I'm guessing its the latter.

china's vaccine doesn't work. chinese booster uptake, especially in the elderly (as in HK), has been very poor. china's elderly are therefore still substantially at risk and unprotected.

pursuing hard lockdowns and trying to extirpate the disease when (a) you are a totalitarian government with all powers to do so and (b) you are afraid of the political fall-out and protest from NOT doing the one thing an all-powerful authoritarian state is supposed to do, viz. protect the fucking citizens lives ... is a rather different scenario to highly vaccinated western liberal democracies.

but great analysis, as per usual.

also china's lockdowns and management are a universal disaster. people are starving in their apartment blocks. there's videos online of hungry chinese people in shanghai, one of the world's mega-cities and supposedly one of the richest places in the planet's second biggest economy, fishing from communal ponds using fucking drones ffs. i would not be looking to china as an advert for anything covid related.

China is up it's own ass and refuses to use western vaccines instead of their locally developed one.

china's no. 1 priority has been to manage this politically, to present it as a political victory, and to score political capital from it. actually protecting lives and ensuring the health of their polity isn't even in the top 3 motivations for the CCP's strategy.

to look to them as a model for anything is disingenuous in the extreme. like how fucking dumb and deluded is your analysis hahah. for the last 2 years you've been saying 'china are lying about their case numbers, hiding their death statistics'. but now they're suddenly a model exemplar of everything that is great. as per usual, dilbert-land has no internal consistency or logic.

If the U.S. better had it's shit together, we could have used COVID to roll back the global reliance on China. But we blew it. Not just Trump's fault. I blame Trump less than the people who elected him.

But the west still has a lot of issues in needs to look inward and fix. American global supremacy doesn't mean much to somebody strung out on Heroin.
