What'd going on with your Win10 computer? My old system boots rapidly Win10. Very smooth gaming and productivity where the CPU/RAM aren't bottlenecking.

I don't notice a lot of the updates. I just schedule it to occur during off-hours.

No idea, half the time it boots OK, half the time it sits there with 'Please wait' for a few minutes
It was originally Win 7 and updated to Win 10

Probably full of crap and unwanted startup programs TBH but I've had a go at it and not much change.

Its about time for a new desktop really but prevarication and inertia are real issues.

I had a lot of issues with my PC until I did a total reinstall of the OS. "Windows Rot" is the term for the inevitable decay of the your Win Boot.

Try and disable indexing, either entirely or selectively.

I've maybe reinstalled Windows 10 once throughout its life on my PC. I think the initial installation was as an upgrade for 7. I keep up MWB and antivirus software, run the occasional spybot scan, and a ccleaner wipe every few months. I don't have a billion things installed. Minimal plugins, no warez. Apart from the occasional slow update, not much Windows Rot to speak of.

Side note, Seasonic has a relatively new PSU/chassis cable management bundle called Synchro. Very easy air filters to pop off and take outside for de-dusting. If I didn't already have a HAF and Noctua aftermarkets on top of that, I might consider it. Don't care for the lack of 5 1/4 drive bays though.

Inverted setup like my old Lian-Li.

exactamundo. there is no 'mac rot'. never once reformatted a mac OS computer before.

Windows Rot is something that follows certain user patterns around. Not that it's a good excuse for the OS to ever do that, but there are steps you can take to prevent it and have a forever installation short of something else going catastrophically wrong.

Side note, it was a term around for XP as well, the OS everyone holds in such esteem.

I love bot-written articles like this. It can't decide if it's talking about Windows the OS or windows as a part of a structure.

"How do you place rotted wood around a window?"

"Does Linux suffer from software rot?"

Just had an awful YouTube experience. I am trying to play a video about the Holocaust from an educational YouTube channel. The ad that played with the video started with a lady and guy sitting together and the lady says "Honey we need to talk about your balls". My jaw literally dropped and the whole class looked at me.

I would like to talk to YouTube's manager.

But seriously. Why does that ad even exist?

i noticed a few years ago that youtube's advertising really seemed to take a nose dive. i was suddenly getting loads of really low-production-quality adverts from things that were all almost universally ponzi schemes, dodgy self-help, get-rich-quick-schemes, etc. just really bizarre shit.

I am going to figure out how to install ad blocker on my MacBook. Should be easy since it is Chrome and all but I just never expected to have to go through that because of Google services.

I would like to Will Smith whoever made that ad.

If your school is so cheap they're using youtube for classes they could at least shell out for youtube premium or whatever it is.

Actually you shouldn't be using youtube.

So I added the ad blocker. I have like 50 video assignments a year for 5 classes. 250 video assignments to classes of like 20 kids. Responsible for like 6,000 eyeballs a year. And all it took was one cute XD ad for me to block all the ads.

Balls! XD

I've blocked ads for years, so haven't really tracked where Youtube's were trending as of late, but it doesn't really surprise me. I was getting malware positives on ad services I was supposed to trust years back, so now I have a zero tolerance policy for any of it.

Then there's the in-video ads. A good compromise, except you have to deal with "products for your balls" that you have to manually timebar-skip. "Creams! Testosterone supplements. Scrote-shavers! Close-up shots of our tight undies! Maaaaaan-wipes! Haw haw haw, Sparta, pirates, etc." It's probably good that people can talk openly about that kind of stuff I suppose, but the whole men's products as an almost intentionally cringe meme has worn itself out.

@mac You should have already had an adblocker. who knows what's going to play. Some of your kids probably think you're an old, computer-unsavvy boomer for not having one installed.

In retrospect yes but I didn't expect YouTube's ad service to put such an inappropriate ad on (A) a video on a children's educational channel.

https://youtu.be/iQeDvnapdlg

And (B) Google literally provides our tech backbone. Each video and channel has a button on it that allows or disallows the video to be seen by students. Google should know to not pitch certain ads to users in our domain.

I didn't expect to get malware positives from youtube ads either (Google should know better!), but here we are. Disabled and never looked back. Maybe it was a false positive, but it wasn't the first time and I didn't feel like keeping on rolling those dice. Sorry CCs, although I have noticed a lot less videos calling on people to disable their adblockers.

Thank God for patreon I guess. It would be something if someone found a way to bundle a bunch of patreons into a single subscription service like cable did before it lost its way.

A lot of stuff I watch on youtube has little blurbs about Curiosity Stream. Maybe look into that?

The odd gamer usually has a twitch they do stuff on before it goes to youtube, and will plug their twitch on youtube. Usually a completely different vibe than the hyperactive, clown-voiced, minecrafting, cryptid jumpscare reaction stuff or whatever people think streaming is nowadays (iS tHiS wHaT yOu LiKe). Some of the content is basically radio round table fare with people talking about whatever, or interesting stuff at their real jobs. "We're doing this interesting work with mycelia at the botany lab, blah blah blah blah" overlayed on top of Dark Souls content is a weird experience. Streams of consciousness answering technical questions about electromagnetic radiation over the top of milsim gunfire. "OK I literally had my first Karen confrontation the other day," tell us more!

There are worse things you could fill five minutes of downtime with.

the whole online advertising economy is shady as fuck and i wonder who actually makes any real money or benefits from it.

even the in-content adverts and paid promos ... where are all the fucking people actually playing raid: shadow legends or whatever?!? how the hell is a generic mobile game able to pay 1000s of content creators for in-video ads? isn't that company straight-up owned by some israeli security firm.

Agree.

I've seen ccs make in-video ads for RSL that I guess were legit sponsored content but came off more as skits making fun of RSL, the game's content, and its saturation on youtube. Respect to them for letting that fly, I guess. Never played the game, but it's probably used for money laundering or something.

No chance I'm enabling ads. Last thing I want to do is misclick while trying to close one and then Google thinks I'm interested in Spiderman condoms.

If you're a cc, I feel like either it won't make a difference because you don't have subs, or it won't make a difference because you're already on 25 million subs.

From the answers page: Turn off Search Highlights in Windows 10

In case you do not like the new Search experience, you can turn off Search Highlights as well. For that, Right-click an empty area of the Taskbar, Click Search, and Uncheck "Search Highlights". This would turn off the Search Highlights feature, together with the icon in the search bar, and return to the previous design.
Easy fix it turns out, but I wish MS would stop making weird cosmetic adjustments (ahem, "the new search experience") to the UI without users' go-ahead. This is literal clutter.

Comments are funny.
