I currently have a Socket 478 3.0Ghz Intel P4 (800Mhz FSB), 2GB 400Mhz DDR, and BFG 6800GT OC Video Card.

Can any of give me an idea of what kind of BF2 performance difference I would see if I switched to a Athlon64 5000 AM2 and 2GB of DDR2 system memory?* Please give evidence/explanations/cite resources so I can see where you are coming from.

*Note: Let's assume I would keep the same 6800 graphics card**

**Sub-Note: Yes, I am aware that upgrading the graphics card first would be the way to go in real life.  However, for this scenario, we're only limited to just the type of cpu, ram, and motherboard.

I am trying to get a feel for whether there would be any noticeable benefit to upgrading these components on my rig.

is it a PCI-E or AGP card? If it is AGP then you may be out of luck.  Since there haven't been any real benchmarks with the AM2 processor I wouldn't even consider them right now.  I would keep my eyes open for Intel's Core 2 Duo (Conroe) processor.

Lets ignore the incompatibility between PCI-E and AGP.  It wouldn't make a noticeable difference in performance for this card anyways, since 8XAGP can handle this cards bandwidth.  I apologize if I was not clear about what I'm trying to find out...

I want to know how much of a performance difference I am going to see with just a faster processor (if any).

i dont think that there will be a big difference. When I used to play on my 3.2 GHz P-4 Northwood it never really maxed out the cpu. Therefore I think that a faster CPU wont really help. Note that these are from experience and i dont know what the difference would be if you up the quality (i had everything on low).

I wasn't asking for that, I am not sure if there are AM2 boards that support AGP.  So if you would get an AM2 processor and you have an AGP card you will also need to upgrade that.

Remember with a mobo upgrade/change you should reformat your windows. Many a blue screens can occur if you change the mobo to a different model.

Clarification: I'm not trying to find out specifically about the AM2 chip or anything.  I am also NOT concerned about compatibility.  I'm just trying to figure out if a signficantly faster CPU would make a significant difference or not.

So basically you want to know if your CPU is the bottleneck? I guess? I mean of course the AMD will out perform the intel, why even ask that.  Will it make a noticeable difference in bf2? I doubt it. I mean, yeah your FPS will go up, but your getting good ones as it is, your eyes wont tell the difference between 60FPS and 120FPS. But in future games, hell yea you would see a difference.

I don't think you would see a large enough difference to warrant the cost.  It would be a nice upgrade, but probably not worth it.  I would more consider the upgrade to Conroe instead as they seem to be tearing up all of the benchmarks, overclocking like gods, and breaking world records.
