Good luck with your ambiguous problem. I'm sure you meant well, whatever it was.

universities lost the vast majority of their public taxpayer purse a decade ago.

the change was even more egregious in (lower income) scotland, because due to the way funding is allocated from westminster, scotland had a highly preferred scheme of free or highly subsidised university tuition (and free prescription medication). that’s why it mentions the fees increasing from £1.9k or whatever to nearer £10k: standard fees in the UK before the defunding/marketisation were nearer £3.5k.

great news dilbert.

UCLA are recruiting for STEM adjunct professors!

luckily for you, only the humanities have to deal with underpayment due to ‘the market, simple supply and demand’. chemistry adjuncts get to deal with ZERO payment! woohoo!

"Must have a PhD and significant college teaching experience" you really can't make this stuff up. So bad.

I've actually done uncompensated work while in college. Not a good feeling. I guess I was getting credits but it was still pay-to-work.

if you're qualified enough to teach a STEM subject at the university of california, you can afford to be paid a wage.

these institutions are literally awash with money.

but dingbats like dilbert cheer it on when it happens to other people, because their subjects aren't real subjects. as if that's the crux of the issue here, lol. valid versus invalid subjects.

The whole idea of it bothers me. Like not volunteering to pick up litter, or work at a soup kitchen or whatever. Just these stupid unpaid positions that benefit for-profit organizations and businesses, even if someone is coming into it who can afford to do it on basically a volunteer basis.

As a student, I was put to random work around the campus, and eventually took another position at a local business. Both unpaid. Definitely had an impact on my enthusiasm for it all.

I don't think I can sync with the mentality of someone gloating about a worker not getting paid (or paid very little), especially ones who need the money. It's a very nasty thing, I think.

in dilbert-world, humanities and arts hipsters deserve their comeuppance. exploitation is okay if it happens to snobby elitists who have the temerity of wanting to be paid for their qualified labour.

My new professor is a girl I went to high school with. We were friends. Feels bad man even though we are technically both MAT holders. She is working towards her PhD.

I have a new job

60% being awesome
40% doing awesome stuff

Its a prestige company and they seemed very keen to have me.
My strange mix of skills and experiences, plus the robot stuff I've been doing at home, seems to be a perfect fit for their immediate and long term needs.
Plus they seem keen to have someone outspoken, and I'm well known for this, as the specific team seems to get coshed by the rest of the company on a regular basis and they want to raise their profile.
It will be a fair workload under time pressure, such is life.

One takeaway is psychometric testing clearly doesn't work.

i've been on disability for 5 weeks but gotta go back next week. not looking forward to waking up early again but whatever. had what turned out to be a cyst removed on my left big toe and realistically only needed like 2 weeks off work but had my doctor extend it so i could milk it a little lol. been pretty nice catching up things, done a little traveling, helping my mom with stuff around her place etc.

"Cyst on my big toe" is quite the euphemism for genital warts. Anyway, the mod team at bf2s is very happy to hear you are in good health.

Started my new job, it seems to be the first properly organised and managed company I've worked for.
For once everyone does seem to be pulling in the same direction, people are friendly and helpful which is novel.

But fuck me its hard work getting up to speed on 10+ systems in one go, in the wrong order, and they need to get a grip on file management and inefficiencies.
Not really liking SAP very much but I expect I'll get used to it/palm off the hard stuff to someone else.

Also very tiring being trained by enthusiastic amateurs.

"What you do is go in, here, hold on thats not it, then you press that, uh no the other button, then you enter a 3 in this box, or is it a 2? Its definitely a 2 or a 3 depending on your department, some departments its backwards, then tick this box and hit enter, hum thats not what I was expecting to happen, er, hold on I'll phone Stan, he knows, wait he's on leave, um"
