More of an Olympic Nat'l Park fan. Muffled forest is otherworldly.

I have never been to a national forest before. Don't even know the difference between a forest and a tree.

I grew up going to the peninsula for backpacking and having to drive 30 extra minutes keeps all the transplants away so I too prefer that. Backpacking on the beach in a NP is also pretty awesome. (not me but an idea of a spot I like: https://happiestoutdoors.ca/toleak-point/

But it'd be nice to have a chance to camp in one of the more picturesque places in the world that is an hour drive from me.

My car is haunted. I got into it today and the clock was updated to Day Light Savings. My radio presets were also reset.

I need to get there at some point. Would also like to take a longer look at Deception Pass than just bridge travel, as well as look around Point Defiance some more.

Man, we have some metal names in this state.

I had a roundtrip flight on a budget airline to California next month for a friend's bachelor party all booked, but today the return flight got cancelled. Had to rebook a one-way there and then get a return on a different airline for a few hundred more than the initial price. Kinda unfortunate.

Are you going to a strip club? If you do ask the girls if they smoke and keep track of the responses. Tell them you are a scientist.

Nope. Never been to one and I'm probably past the point in my life where the novelty is worth it. If I want to make Mr. Macbeth proud, I can't be searching for a nice lady in dens of iniquity such as those.

Are you flying into Ontario? That probably would have been the cheapest.

Joshua Tree is awesome. If you're staying there, I hope it's at Jumbo Rocks.

Palm Springs, actually, which does seem to be cheaper and closer. The groom's brother set up accommodations, so I didn't have any say in the where.

Looking to replace a lot of my older cookware (taking up cupboard space with disused, warped pans and scratched non-sticks, no bueno). Turns out shopping for some of that stuff is more of a headache than shopping for a new computer. Thinking a wok or two, a couple 12" frying pans with lids, and various smaller pans.

Can we talk about indoor light pollution? Why does every device need a light on all the time? I like to sleep in total darkness.

All the ^'s to that. I've complained once, twice, maybe three times about light pollution from LEDs and displays, and I feel like it's never been worse. The coffee maker lights the whole kitchen up a ghostly blue with its maybe 0.5" display. When the fridge door light comes on as well, it's bright enough to read a book. Trying to sleep in a room with a dozen different devices each adding to undesired luminosity is horrible, especially when you think you're used to it but it still affects your sleep.

The biggest insult is when a device manufacturer is aware of light emitting disorder and has an off switch … for all but the power LED. Thanks.

Office computer monitor turns on in the middle of the night sometimes for its windows update. It's like there's a burglar fishing around.

Lights out in the media room, trying to watch a movie, 12 different devices around the TV all staring at me like HAL 9000 contemplating its next murder.

RE: sensory pollution, mute button on a microwave that beeps twice at you because you have to press beeper volume and then zero. Can it not just beep when you press zero? What's that, an extra $0.03/model for add'l microchips?

I was hoping my Explorer was made early enough to avoid this, since it was made only 8 days after that article was published, but apparently it is indeed one of the ones that's temporarily missing the backseat climate control module due to the chip shortage.  There's a plastic cover fitted flush to the spot where the module would normally have gone.  I wasn't really bothered by it at first but I had my family in the truck yesterday and my brother wanted A/C.  I had to take my eyes off the road for way longer than I was comfortable with on a little winding narrow two-lane backroad to navigate the stupid touchscreen menu specifically for back seat controls, when ideally he could've controlled it himself with physical knobs that were directly accessible to 2nd row passengers:

I'll have to e-mail the dealer I got it from to confirm my eligibility to have it installed for free when the kits start to arrive at dealerships later this year, it's supposed to be a standard feature on the XLT trim.

The good news is that for the same reason that I don't have this feature, my car is also completely missing Ford's obnoxious auto start-stop feature where the car would automatically turn the engine completely off at stoplights and then turn back on when I press in the gas.

Interesting, can't be long before an OEM gets sued for causing a crash by putting something which should be accessible by instinctive blind touch four menus away on a stupid touch screen which knocks out your night vision.

I'm sure the marginal benefit from start-stop is outweighed by the reduction in engine life.

Trailers for trailers are bullshit. Who has time to watch a 5 second blurb for a 1 minute trailer. "You're about to watch this trailer! And now, our feature trailer!" Like could there be a technical point? Saving data? But it's in the same video as the rest of the trailer. Why would you watch movie trailers on a cellular service where data is such a premium resource? It can't be it. So why does this exist? Am I alone in being annoyed at it? I looked it up.

Why movie trailers now begin with five-second ads for themselves
https://www.theverge.com/2016/4/22/1148 … son-bourne

Take for example, the trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence that was released this morning: the first 10 seconds are visually arresting — an alien ship turning Earth's atmosphere into flames, an upside-down skyscraper skewering a city like a giant dart. But the images, free of context, make no sense. They're simply loud and spectacular.
"Visually arresting," I don't even know what I'm looking at. Then they give you no processing time and just abrupt-cut into the start of the trailer. It's so jarring.

From cinemablend:

The Trend: Movie marketing has evolved with the boom of the digital era, and that means catering to audiences who now have the ability to skip many YouTube videos after five seconds. As a result, we have seen a notable uptick in trailers that actually begin with rapid-fire teasers preceding the full preview that attempt to show off some of the most important action and drama highlights before an audience member would typically click the "skip" button.

Why It Sucks: These teasers suck because they give away vital footage to a trailer before audiences have a chance even to watch the preview. A lot of work goes into editing the best trailers, and those explosive, rapid-fire montages ruin the tone of many of them. It's like taking a shot of hot sauce before diving into a gourmet meal.
I see. Thanks, google, for answering my questions on a problem you helped create.

At the very least, the rapid cut should not be shown on paid services.

Yeah, it seems like a simple thing to leave out of the car on paper, but like you said, the alternative method of control is even more dangerous unless you have somebody in the front passenger seat to manage it for you.

I feel the same way about start-stop not being worth the extra wear on the related parts, although my concern is more about how awful it could hypothetically be 5 years down the road when it's a nice cold day in the fall or early winter, my aged car battery now suddenly shows slight signs of weakness when starting up on the way to work, and then at a busy intersection in Annapolis, start-stop turns my car off as usual and eventually the light turns green and my battery just can't quite manage enough cranking amps to turn the car back on and I'm either immediately rear-ended at worst or at best I'm suddenly stuck in a very long, angry line of cars, having to abandon the car at that busy light and wait on AAA to come tow it

It already happened in January with the 93 Dodge Dakota I was borrowing, the fuel pump died while I was at an extremely busy left turn and I was waiting over an hour for AAA to come gas it up(gauge stopped working in December so I thought it was empty and couldn't tell, turns out gauge failure's a sign of a failing fuel pump), luckily a cop blocked off oncoming traffic and helped me push the car into a parking lot.

Car companies are under pressure to cut fuel consumption numbers, they don't give a crap if your engine is worn out in ten years time or your fuel savings are eaten up by having to buy extra batteries.

If Americans drove smaller cars they wouldn't have this problem.

The cars do keep getting smaller to accommodate those CAFE standards, or nowadays the cars disappear entirely because everybody is just buying trucks instead.  I would totally have bought another landbarge if I had the option but literally nobody makes them at all anymore.  The closest I could currently get is probably a BMW 8-series.

I'm hoping that once electric vehicles go mainstream that we'll start seeing manufacturers experiment with cars of all different shapes & sizes again.  The bonus is that the larger the car, the larger the battery.  I would love to buy an all-electric 20 ft long Lincoln Continental Mark IX that's styled like a 70s throwback if they ever make one.

Thats the stupid thing about CAFE - manufacturers are incentivised out of building efficient cars and encouraged to build gas-guzzling trucks

Then no-one wants a car because every other moron is driving a monster truck which will squash them like a bug.
