I've listened to maybe about 30 minutes of it in the background since this all started, literal youtube channel surfing while I'm doing other tasks. I don't maintain any illusions that he's an expert, and neither does he. I do appreciate that the theme is countering and puzzling out misinformation, and the "stop and think for a moment" kind of fare. Something that mainstream press often seem to lose sight of, and why I linked it as a bizarre curiosity.

That said, it's definitely not my go-to source.

Very funny to me that Mac is all like "wow haha," meanwhile reposting snuff, garbage opinions, and a million, dull, public freakout videos from reddit.

Er, reaction videos are like a whole other, multitiered genre ranging from the stuff you just posted (pass on the "youtuber reacts to vines and memes and tiktoks" fare) to someone taking notes and vlogging their thoughts about a TV episode.

Two of the best mods for dawn of war - unification and ulitimate apocalypse - I discovered on youtube along with stuff like brutal doom. also other video games, I think 'souls being one of them. I think it beats subjecting myself to a thousand public freakout videos and ghoulish daily beheadings.

Did Russia intentionally attack a holocaust memorial today? You'd think Dilbert would be on their side after that.

i didn’t disagree with that. we are talking about the consequences of the measures, though. it could just as easily have negative consequences for the west. 140 million people living inside a closed media bubble, being hurt by western sanctions, being fed propaganda … what could possibly go wrong? the idea we are going to make them revolt against putin is optimistic in some regards.

Really the only path is to ensure Putin's inner circle removes him, we can maybe deliver that by applying pressure in the right places - and from what I can see that adds up to the generals, the oligarchs and the Russian people. The oligarchs and the people we can touch, the generals barely although a war crimes investigation might help.

Progress in Ukraine is mysteriously slow, apart from a few crack divisions who are being expended its snail-like. This isn't how the Russian military normally gets things done.

Interesting, the IPC wanted to let Russia and Belarus compete at the paralympics but too many other nations threatened a boycott so they had to boot them out.
Embarrassing for China - this is good.

A shame for the competitors who have spent the last four years training, but Putin's fault for breaking the olympic truce.

How do they usually get things done? I've read it mentioned that they also don't take care of their trucks as well as they should, which would help explain why you see so many of them roadbound and subject to delays and blockages, as well as some of the reports I've read of blowout issues if those are as severe as suggested.

Fighting in areas of dense areas of structure and plentiful tree cover also has its own set of challenges as opposed to typical open ground that characterizes much of the war porn we've seen in the past 20 years.

it's been reported that china asked russia via a diplomatic back-channel not to invade ukraine until the winter olympics were over with.

so evidently they knew about it far in advance, too.

which represents more of a 'victory' for them than this minor egg-on-face moment over the wheelchair judo or whatever.

ukraine is overwhelmingly wide-open flat terrain. it's not been called the breadbasket of russia/eastern europe for nothing. it's essentially iowa. excepting lviv and the western part of the country, the russians only really have to pool their forces around 3-4 major cities in the main part of the nation.

Er, I think some 20% of Ukraine represents as forest, compared to some odd 2% in Afghanistan. Despite deforestation concerns, the place isn't barren of trees, and photos abound with them even in developed areas.

Meanwhile, like 50% in my own state:

I'm pretty sure there's Ewoks somewhere in there.

Ukraine announced that 16,000 foreigners volunteered to fight for them. How many will actually make it to Ukraine and how fast is up in the air but that is still an impressive amount. Thousands of extra support troops or if things get really desperate guys in basements that need to be cleared or extra boots to break an encirclement.

erm, yes, but hitler, stalin, and now putin (plus centuries of conquests beforehand by, e.g. the poles) didn't all see ukraine as desirable lebensraum because it was full of impassable, knotty forests, newbie. it's practically a giant open-air factory.

'photos abound with [trees] even in developed areas'. yes, kyiv is quite leafy. i'm not sure green spaces and tree planting in cities is really a great way to characterize terrain from a military POV. the challenge to the russian military from ukraine's terrain so far has evidently come from its vast tracts of muddy steppes and plains, not from forests ffs.

i've seen it commented on multiple times that ukraine poses problems for air control, for getting troops around by helicopter, etc, because it is so flat and featureless.

i'm amazed that eastern europe has more vegetation than afghanistan, though. great comparison.

makes you wonder why ukraine doesn't have green on its flag in recognition of its famous gigantic forests.

My point is that they're present, come into play for concealment, and complicate fighting. This isn't purely my commentary, it's been brought up by military officers. The mud, notorious mud, of course isn't helping the Russians much either at this stage. But yeah, good job finding a picture of a field. I could snap a photo of high desert and scoff at the notion WA has any trees.

sure, there's tree cover and embankments on roadsides and so on, like pretty much any highway in europe that verges onto farmland. but it's not like the ukrainians are waging a guerilla struggle from within deep woodland concealment.

But yeah, good job finding a picture of a field.
it's literally what their national flag alludes to, you moron, i.e. that which is considered to be 'echt' ukrainian, that which typifies the country.

The flag of Ukraine was adopted in 1918, and is interpreted as the blue sky (symbolizing peace) above the wheat fields (symbolizing prosperity).
https://t4.ftcdn.net/jpg/04/87/41/97/360_F_487419796_Arg2o2NfGhBnx62lKPnyrmOMiHjY72ar.jpg

the price of wheat has shot up 40% since the start of the crisis. ukraine literally provides half of europe with its wheat.

it has commonly been referred to as 'europe's breadbasket' for centuries.

now you're out here making out it's a land full of difficult wooded terrain. "there's even trees in their cities, look at the pictures!" lol. i assure you the russian forces are not having to contend with any problematic forests on their slow and inexorable march on kyiv or kharkiv.

I'm making out nothing of the sort, bite me.

You pick the weirdest hills to die on, and strangest times to regress, you know that? Drag your little google man around Kiev, for instance. Trees. Are. Present, and factor into concealment opportunities.

trees are present in every european capital you dipshit. is it a material fact to urban warfare? i'm sure they're going to be worried about all those freedom fighters hiding between linden trees in the streets.

use your expert google maps knowledge to look at berlin. plenty of trees and urban woodland. do you think 'forest warfare' was a major component of capturing berlin in ww2?

from a terrain POV the much bigger problems for an army advancing by land to kyiv, or across the southern regions, are precisely low-lying flatland. water. bogs. mud. kyiv is basically surrounded by the largest marshland in europe. marshes. very distinctly not woodlands.

there's been no coordinated efforts by the ukrainians, any preparations made, etc, to make use of wooded concealment. i honestly don't know why you're prattling on about this. "there's 20% trees in the country! that's more than afghanistan!" ukraine's central, eastern and southern terrains don't reflect this impression you're trying to paint at all.

all of the fighting will be urban warfare. ambushes and guerilla tactics. that's a given. the cities will be besieged and choked off. i don't know why you're being so stubborn about 'forests'.

so your argument is ... patches of bosky woodland in kyiv are going to complicate fighting? are you kidding? russia's forces are going to encircle the cities and use their artillery and air superiority. i don't think any ukrainian resistance is going to come from infantry taking shelter in woods.

It doesn't matter anyway. 8 hours from now, you'll forget the whole thing. You never have been the most easygoing person here. I still remember fondly that one time you snidely reminded me that a pandemic was on after I'd said my uncle died from it. Fun timing, that.

More off-topic, the autism stuff really does seem dead as an insult in 2022, or should be. Mostly I'd expect it from the reddit people you detest so much. How shit of a person does that make you calling internet randos autistic as a form of insult, with no idea if they really area? I don't really care about political correctness online too much, but it does seem to be within the same *ahem* spectrum as Trump mocking the disabled.
