Belarus and Russia were also stripped of event planning and recognition, I guess.

It was a levy of western articles I wouldn't expect to have a finger on the pulse of or be interested in Korean (or really any Asian) sentiment. I feel the urge to clarify that I'm not making any judgment that that's all that's happening. I just thought it was funny a bunch of these articles were all the about tkd thing, before even scrolling down, with a big helping of "how do you like them apples" on the side.

Not a feed I pay much attention to anyway. Just along the way to other tasks.

There is a reddit sub promoting volunteering to fight in Ukraine. About 30,000 subscribers. Plenty of post by veterans going to go fight. It may seem ridiculous but back during the height of ISIS, some posters in /r/SyrianCivilWar did end up fighting for the Islamic State. A lot more found their way to fight for the Kurds. The DoD was monitoring the sub too. Considering the media and governments are giving their blessing to people going to fight, this could turn into a big thing.
They don't know what they're getting themselves into and it's a terrible mistake on the part of the newspapers and some governments to have supported this movement either explicitly or implicitly. It is another factor on the existing pile that will make this conflict even more difficult to navigate, and most of them will have no business being in a warzone. Certainly not this one.

Fighting a conventional army with thermobaric missiles, tactical nukes and other horrible ways to cause death at its disposal is a terrifying thing. These weapons haven't been used yet, but it's likely some of them will be.

Though I suppose some of those lost souls go there because they're looking to die.

UN votes 'overwhelmingly to deplore the invasion'.

A lot of the people signing up are GWoT veterans. Of course they are going into a bad situation but I am sure a lot of them know it is going to be a grinder. Even so, if the guys are put in support roles they still free up Ukrainian fighters for the front.

some pretty surprising abstainers from the UN vote.

south africa? wtf. we should never have given it back, etc etc.

vietnam?! the irony of a country which has been steamrolled by overweening imperial powers for almost all of its modern history, abstaining on a vote to condemn ... an overweening imperial power steamrolling a small country. what can vietnam hope to gain from notionally aligning with russia? i thought they were undergoing a small economic miracle because of their openness to trade/development with the USA, korea, etc.

Somewhere around $2 billion in lethal aid in less than a week. That's just announced aid. I expect every former Warsaw Pact country is going to empty their old Soviet stockpile into Ukraine. Shame that deal about the jets fell through.

Economies closely tied to Russia are going to get hit hard soon. Syria and to a lesser extent Turkey. We may see a flare up in fighting in Syria if their enemies use their new oil profits to heat up the conflict there.

If Iran was smart, they would use their oil profits on developing a nuclear bomb.

lol european economies are going to get hit soon too. this crisis is only going to compound the already-underway issues with inflation/cost of living, and the energy crisis.

more geneva convention breaking manipulation, to be sure, but at least this is a moderately happy ending.

I guess a face says a lot more than a blurred out face but I still wish they'd at least anonymize their POWs. There are some maybe justifiable concerns even from Ukraine's supporters online that this could hurt the Russian POWs when they return to Russia, or their families before.

A non-trivial share of the people are idiots. They can’t or, for many reasons, don’t want to absorb non-one-sided information and just want to be “outside of politics”. And the most accessible information is, sadly, propaganda.
oooooof

As an American, that stings.

You probably wouldn't know this but there are some famous videos of Russian POWs getting beheaded in Chechnya. Like many videos. Russians are as aware of these as we are of say planes going into buildings.

Showing that they treat POWs well instead of "like the Chechens" is probably something that resonates with the Russians.

I am keeping an eye on these foreign volunteers. You know a lot of the people who want to go want to do some ISIS ninja shit on Russians.

There are probably ways they could do that without sounding both parties sounding like the POW is about to be beheaded. Impersonal footage of them being fed, treated for their wounds, and lodged as well as can be managed for the circumstances, over pushing a camera into a shaking soldier's face and making them recite some copypasta they deliver as if it could be their last words.

I saw a video of some guy saying to go kill Russians in accordance with Sharia. Islamic jurisprudence in modern war, wonderful.

Ironically a gaming stream tries to be more objective than some of the stuff I've seen out of mainstream media. I've had this one playing in the background for the past several minutes. Even voiced with lucidity about how the sanctions are going to suck for people who did nothing wrong (or haven't even been born yet). Up front about what he isn't sure about or isn't an expert on.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5Bkgu5Z44w

His other content includes warhammer 40k mods for stuff like arma 3, not who you'd expect as one of the voices of reason above the usual warmongering columnists.

Imagine a streamer sounding less unhinged than who you're usually "supposed" to listen to. He's literally pops up in my playlist because I sometimes like to keep track of what cool mods are on stuff like arma 3 without having to play arma 3. I didn't expect regular bits about the conflict over there of generally higher brow than the usual "rawr hang the Russians" fare.

You are not in much of a position to criticize either, absorbing content from greasy reddit.

+1. who has the time. this is just some random opinions-are-like-assholes guy with a captive audience. i want to be better informed by experts not tossed about in the great skirmishes between reddit groupthink and streamer insurgents.
