ProPublica did a thing about that too a while back. My dad did get forced out of IBM through that and I actually did try to get him to talk to them about it.

Crypto exchanges refuse to cut off Russian transactions. Would be unsurprised if the government now comes down on the whole thing. The crypto people picked this hill to die on.

Crypto is the worlds biggest scam and I'm still confident mining and blockchain are the Russians using distributed computing to crack western military codes. There's just nothing else which needs that amount of computing power.

If this means it gets taken down then great.

it’s a book that talks about murderous and corrupt mining/engineering companies, and the great harm that such STEM types do to the world, for one thing. you’d find it very interesting.

National Review Article about how the U.S. should have a trillion dollar defense budget. An increase of $230 billion.

The article didn't say where we would get the money for that. I bet they want to axe the food stamp program in order to build some more ships to combat the Russian naval threat (???)

Top comment on the article.

As an Army vet, throwing money at the Pentagon won't solve anything. Setting aside the excess spending and failures of procurement programs where every congressperson has to get some piece made in their district, and the lunacy of combating climate change and racism by the armed forces, a lack of funding is not the problem.

There are not enough fit (let alone interested) young people today to man the expanded Navy the article wants. There is nobody willing to work in the shipyards to fix the submarines. Their aren't enough people interested in flying, let alone capable, of flying the next generation of fighter jets.

Obese, lazy and entitled 18-21 year olds want to sit in their parents basements or get the "free" college peddled by Democrats, not put there life on the line for the GI Bill.

Making the Pentagon budget 1 trillion won't fix fat, lazy and stupid.
That comment is

The guy persistently misuses their/there, in a way that, impressively, suggests he has them switched in his head.

a person who hangs out on comment sections, reading articles all day, and hasn't figured out how to use their/there.

here is a crazy thought ...

half of the world's neon, vital for semiconductor manufacture, is supplied by ukraine. and like two-thirds of the world's semiconductors are made in ... taiwan. so if, between them, russia and china take ukraine and taiwan, they literally have the global electronics supply by the balls.

a totally huge hypothetical 'if' there, of course, but it's quite a giddying thought to think just how a small number of relatively minor strategic gains can begin to flip the global order.

plus russia now controls europe's biggest nuclear facility. lol.

and it's not inconceivable that a long period of harsh sanctions from the US and western banking institutions will only serve to motivate russia/china to get their own shit in order. in the long-term it could undermine the default go-to status of the dollar as the global reserve currency, or at least so far as the petro-dollar economy, upon which everything else is based, goes.

russia is still the world's second biggest supplier of fuels. if they started trading with china in gold reserves or some other currency, instead, it would probably go some ways to creating a multi-polar world order. 'punishing' people by not letting them trade in your currency, in which they might also have large bonds/debts, is not exactly the greatest weapon ...

Speaking of Viagra...do you think Putin has sex? Like a lot of it with a lot of different women? That is what Saddam and Qaddafi did. It is very sus of anyone with absolute power who also doesn't have a reputation for keeping a bunch of girls on retainer.

I love that "as an Army vet" lead-in. Probably enlisted. As we all know, the army is famous for producing crackerjack geniuses out of their lower enlisteds. Probably got his government welfare ride to blue collar training at a community college and thinks he has the whole world figured out. "America could be great again if only they listened to me," and stopped whining about how little a dollar can actually get them these days!

Indeed its a problem, Russia and China together can be self-sufficient leaving everyone else in deep trouble.

Showed this to my juniors today. Probably one of the most important videos I showed them all year. Some of them watched it intently, others listened to rap music on their phones. The video is 14 minutes long. You should watch it. Even though it is from the 50's, the video is still very relevant. Please let me know what you think?

Gave a lesson on the American class system. I tried to explain to the students that "this is the most important lesson you may have all year. The class system affects you today and will affect you for the rest of your life." Most of the class didn't care at all. It wasn't just the cell phones. It was off topic comments and questions. Want to talk about rap music and blah blah blah. I can't today.

It's probably normal for people to put off facing that ladder when so many rungs have been removed by the people already at the top. Adults do this, certainly kids will.

Not all of that video really applies today, either. You could argue that the distribution of population between classes (also spending power) has shifted in the decades following when that was made. Resigned narrator pointing out a middle class man's chonker of a home, "he probably won't do much better for the rest of his life." Pfft.

Do you have newer material?

We are talking about social class in the 50's. A video actually from the 50's is good. I don't give them reading material from the 50's to go with it.

If you're speaking purely in terms of the 50s, sure. But I think its modern relevance is a bit limited. A management-class father from the 50s might (have been) challenged later in life by helping out with a down payment for his 5th child's house. A father today may be lucky if he can afford an apartment big enough for his family, between his, and his wife's, combined six jobs.

"this is the most important lesson you may have all year. The class system affects you today and will affect you for the rest of your life."
Round peg into square hole, you need a new video.

You are right. I was wrong to show a video from the decade I was talking about. I should have instead ran a modern movie and than transitioned into a discussion on class. Hmm. What movie do you think?
This would have been great but Will Smith slapped Chris Rock.

I wonder what the man this movie is based on would say about how hard it is placating the whites before they go gently into the night.
