I've been watching them. I usually set aside my two weeks every two years to watch both Olympics. People complaining that this year its all about politics clearly don't watch the Olympics ever.

Authors of our own plummeted viewership, perhaps. Endless griping and complaining about The Woke Athletes on Fox, etc. may play a part for some demographics. The Olympics, like COVID-19, are partisan issues!

I am peripherally aware that China had to ramp up factory production of their panda mascot. And also that people complained that it had a male voice in one ad. Although to be fair Olympics mascots are not supposed to be voiced at all.

I don't mind the winter olympics, elite sport is mostly psychological at that level so they're interesting from that viewpoint.
I don't really care about aerials, although the difficulty and pressure are remarkable.
Figure skating is OK, it looks effortless but really isn't.

I have what I'd describe as basic competency at regular ice skating about the level of my roller skating. Long enough going around in circles and and working at more intermediate stuff will wear you out. I have respect for figure skaters who take it into an art form and push against records. If I tried to do an aerial twirl at this point, I'd probably fall on my face.

curling strikes me as the equivalent of an outdoor pub game to be played for diversion during long and boring winters. it’s fucking bowls/pétanque for christ sake. something old people do to keep socially active and stop their hip oil from seizing up. how in the fuck is that an olympic sport?!

i can see the athletic merit in the ski’ing disciplines. the cross-country stuff is basically military. pretty sure my cousin did it as part of his royal marines arctic training.
but, i mean, it’s hopelessly niche. it’s literally called ‘nordic ski’ing’. lmao. no surprises that every year the scandinavian countries carry away all the medals. they’re the only fucking countries with any history or pedigree in these incredibly niche pursuits.
i can sort of see the idea of making winter olympics as a concession to all the northern/cold nations which historically had no connection to summer olympics. but the complexion of many of these disciplines is odd beyond belief.
you could just as credibly assert that log tossing and highland games pursuits should be included. let scotland soak up 8 free gold medals a year at an equally inane and minority pursuit.
