Face is the perfect size.
Welcome to the Oris club, great choice. The big crown looks fantastic. I have the Aquis source of life edition.
I have an Aquis Date that utilizes recycled plastic for the face. I like it but im not a fan of the metal strap, and the dial is a bit big for my liking. In hindsight I definitely should have ordered the smaller dial size.

Speaking of jewelry...I still need to get myself a gold crucifix and chain. When Jesus comes back I don't want to not be dressed for the occasion.

Pivotal moment though it may be in the story, I don't think I'd want my worshippers to hold the thing that killed me in such obsessive reverence. I think few people would, unless their last name was Addams.

Finding a good chain can be tough. Make sure the jeweler is reputable and that they tell you the gold % and weigh the chain before you buy so you understand how much gold you're buying. Do not buy at a pawn shop, no matter how appealing it may be.

Could you just find one for me? Italians are masters at wearing crucifixes.

I had one I got for my first communion but I cast it into a fire when I renounced my faith.

Not sure if I said already, I stopped wearing watches as I had to take them off 3+ times a day so Bobo the Terrible could do his bite training.
He'd broken one fang before he got him and the root had to be removed. Looking back $400 was a bargain.

i have broken or scratched every nice watch i ever bought, either through clumsiness or on a night out, normally involving alcohol.

i don’t work in a workplace that requires a cocksize- analogue piece of bling, in fact understatement is rather more the order of the day in the arts/culture sector, and i certainly don’t date the sort of woman whose eyes light up at the sight of such a thing.

no shade to guys who are into it though. they’re finely made things if you can extract them from the managerial and golf club vibe.

I had a really nice watch as a kid, inevitably that got a chipped face within days, then lost, since then I've not allowed myself to get invested in watches. Every watch since has got damaged somehow.
The only watches I actually like are the minimalist Pulsars and Citizens.

Enough information is enough, I don't even want the date.

My parents had some really nice solid gold Rolexes and Longines given to them by Qataris, they were supposed to declare them and hand them in but discovered the support staff were selling them on and pocketing the cash so they didn't.

Maybe thats where I picked up the style.

my dad and uncle both have rolex submariners (afaik). it was always unfathomable to me as a young adult seeing that sort of money just hanging out on a wrist. all i could think was that it would pretty much furnish and fill a decent-sized home library or record collection. something to derive hours of actual joy and stimulation from.

of course there's nothing stopping someone from having all those things. 'umble arts graduates have to make those sort of choices.

if i had $20k of cash hanging around agitating a hole in my pocket, though, i'd do another master's or something, just for the brain-tickle.

Back before men could wear jewelry a watch was the only wearable ostentatious display of wealth men could have.
I'd rather have some nice guns.

it's not really as if it's the norm now for men to 'wear ostentatious jewelry' unless they're atlanta rappers, or something.

i'd say the mid-life crisis car or motorbike has done it pretty ably, too.

A dandy's entire ensemble could be said to be plenty ostentatious. More recently, a watch was hardly the only ostentatious piece of bling for a conservative mid-20th century man's look:

  • fancy crucifix necklace or modest chain
  • wedding/club/college rings
  • tie clips (pin, tack, bar, clutch)
  • lapel pins (very popular in the Soviet Union before it became dress code for US politicians, hahaha)
  • cuff links (almost ceremonially gifted at times)
  • fancy belt buckles
  • etc.

Remember to keep your shoes shined, pants pressed and creased, shirt ironed. Spend some time agonizing over visible lint or pet hair. A bit of cologne, but not too much please. Don't only trim your nails, but utilize the file.

limited bling selection

e: Also, as zeek mentioned:

i'd say the mid-life crisis car or motorbike has done it pretty ably, too.

funningly submariners are an "entry level" luxury watch.

also its a bit of a netowrking piece i found, rich people have watches, people like talking watches etc. watch prices have gone nuts lately to the point its legitimately an investible asset.

As a millionaire, I'd probably pick up one of the lower Omega Speedmasters just for the historic interest of the line, worn on Apollo 11. Would still flinch at more than 10k for the stuff above entry models even with a bottomless well of cash.

From there, might pick up where I left off from ground school, get my instrument rating, and maybe hand-deliver dilbert his American spring.

Actually its an Italian spring.

As a millionaire I'd stay completely anonymous, not work and have a workshop full of machines.
I might treat myself to a nearly new Subaru.

yeah they both bought them for a family event.

i know they’re not a scratch on a patek, but that wasn’t my point.

spending grad school money on a timepiece seems insane to me. ‘investible asset’ or not. i’d value the former way more.

imagine spending $75,000 so you can have a conversation opener lol. here in britain we mention the weather. or here’s an idea: read a fucking book or attend the opera or something.

cannot imagine living in circles where people’s elected choice of enthusiastic conversation is a bling watch.

I revealed my lowbrow upbringing when we were looking at the top end items in the rewards program at work a while back. Reading the items out among all the TVs were fancy watches and I pronounced Hermès as" her-meez", whereupon I was promptly corrected by someone who watches the Kardashians that it's more "air-mezz".

Correcting people like that is super obnoxious. Funny also when they offer up an incorrect pronunciation, inflection, spelling, whatever. A little forward for them to, uninvited, be acting the parent with another grown person anyway.
