There's reading books and then there's reading books. How well the information is absorbed; analyzed with a trained, critical eye. I've read multiple books on anatomy and biology, but don't consider myself a doctor, keeping in mind this copy/paste:

The proverb 'A little knowledge is a dangerous thing' expresses the idea that a small amount of knowledge can mislead people into thinking that they are more expert than they really are, which can lead to mistakes being made.

cannot believe a western nation is talking about banning books. in 2022.

remember in the late 90s when everyone was shocked and appalled that salman rushdie’s novels were being burned in islamic countries? how everyone tutted at the barbarism and expressed disbelief that a culture could get so upset over some books?

yeah. that’s literally white america now.

Same group of people banned Harry Potter, Magic the Gathering, D&D, etc. It is the evangelicals being weird again.

i don’t like rushdie myself but that’s hardly the case.

ironically i’m pretty sure you were in support of charlie hebdo’s cartoonists drawing lame, juvenile cartoons in the name of ‘freedom of expression’.

yes some parts of the british public were annoyed that rushdie was getting a taxpayer-funded police protection etc.

way to miss the fucking point, though. we tend not to burn books or have mass moral panics over reading material in the notionally secular west.

it shows just how far america has backslid into the fundamentalist-religiose sludge.

The Hebdo cartoonists were also morons, and their cartoons were shit, didn't really deserve to be murdered.

Rushdie knew exactly what he was doing and reveled in it, not caring about the consequences.

there's a bit more to his novels than cheap provocation, even i can see and admit that despite really not liking rushdie (as a writer, that is, not for his politics) at all.

books, and indeed art, are sometimes there to challenge and provoke prevailing ideas.

american states are voting to censor and ban graphic novels about the fucking holocaust. we are into serious fascism territory. hence why i mentioned the frankly islamo-fascist book burnings of salman rushdie's works.

I think the mouse holocaust book was made in order to teach kids about the Holocaust in a way that wasn't overly traumatic. Side steps the issue of race to simplify it as a cat vs mouse thing. You could even argue it is a white wash. Of course that flew right over the head of pig people.

It should be noted that not all of America is wrapped up in this lunacy. It is a specific subset of conservative white Americans. Here in the great state of New Jersey, we have mandates from the state saying we have to teach about the slave trade, the Holocaust, and LGBT rights.

Example
Under legislation sponsored by Assemblymen William D. Payne and Craig A. Stanley, schools in the Garden State are moving to recognize the integral part African-Americans have played at every turn in this nation’s history. The Amistad Bill (A1301), which became law in 2002, calls on New Jersey schools to incorporate African-American history into their social studies curriculum. This legislation also created the Amistad Commission, a 23-member body charged with ensuring that African-American history, contributions and experiences are adequately taught in the state’s classrooms.
https://www.nj.gov/education/amistad/about/

How much these mandates are enforced is blah but at least the state has your back. Or you can just blame them. A local district had issues with people being angry about the LGBT mandate. Over and over again the board told every complaining parent "this is a mandate from the state. We don't have a choice".

This school controversy makes me hesitant to mouth off about subjects I am not a certified expert in. A lot of people going nuts in either direction get a lot wrong about the basic functions of things. The right wingers probably more so. The lefties or whatever are willing to defer to education specialist while the right wingers want to argue the points they read.

ok so you clearly haven’t read it.

there’s nothing baldly insulting or offensive in the book. nothing that would cause a secular reader’s eyes to widen anyway.

interpreted by conservative muslims, you could stretch and say that discussing the life of the Prophet in quite mundane and naked terms is ‘blasphemy’. i believe an old testament name is called ‘a bastard’ or something in a bit of dialogue - swearing in dialogue in fiction generally isn’t seen as an incitement to riot in sane societies.

once again you’re pontificating on things you know nothing about.

I never read the book by check the wiki when the controversy.

According to McRoy (2007), other controversial elements included the use of the name Mahound, said to be a derogatory term for Muhammad used by the English during the Crusades; the use of the term Jahilia, denoting the 'time of ignorance' before Islam, for the holy city of Mecca; the use of the name of the Angel Gibreel (Gabriel) for a film star, of the name of Saladin, the great Muslim hero of the Crusades, for a devil, and the name of Ayesha the wife of Muhammad for a fanatical Indian girl who leads her village on a fatal pilgrimage. Moreover, the brothel of the city of Jahilia was staffed by prostitutes with the same names as Muhammad's wives,[19] who are viewed by Muslims as 'the Mothers of all Believers'.[20]
That's a bit much. The Iranian leadership displayed barbarism by calling for his deaths but it is not like he wrote some stuff that was just misunderstood.

I looked up his biography and he was Muslim by birth and became an atheist. I would bet he had some intense hatred for Islam probably mixed up with some self loathing for being born into a colonial system and educated enough to understand the humiliation of it all. So he punched down on some other Muslims to create distance between the people he probably blamed for the situation that led to the whole British Raj thing.

That's my theory.

Yes, I can't see any muslim finding that at all offensive, why would they unless they're silly people?

Mind you it seem like only yesterday when you could start a fight in an Irish pub by saying "blessed are the cheesemakers"

Really Rushdie was just an attention-seeking twat.

Lancaster - John Nichol

Not really sure what the point was, it was messy to get going and was likely written from details culled from other books, most of the rest of it it seemed to be about the miserable conditions and sacrifices made of the crews in general and some in depth specifics, so I suppose it was worth writing from that point of view.

What Really Happened in Wuhan - Sharri Markson

I was about 90% sure covid came from a lab leak, now I'm 100% sure.
Even if it didn't there's no question China is developing virus based bioweapons to kill us all.
The US involvement is very weird.

'why do i need to take a dumb ethics module?' - STEM graduate.

'hmm top-level bioweapons research is going to kill us all. it's very weird why scientists are working on this stuff'.

there's nothing prima facie suspicious about gain-of-function research. there are lots of regulatory grey areas, depending on extra-locality and national-level laws and legislation.

What bothers me about the notion that it COVID-19 is a bioweapon is that the conspiracy theorists are folding in speculations of the extent of American involvement.

I would ask this: "why would the United States help China develop a weapon to bring the United States to its knees?"
Their answer (over the rims of their glasses if they're wearing any): "why indeed!" dun-dun-DUUUN

Most people who pick 2 also pick 1. 1 is easier to live with anyhow. How are we going to punish China for a bioweapon? They make all of our stuff.

Said not STEM graduate ever.

There's something suspicious about the PLA conducting gain of function and genetic-specific virus research.

Gain of function research has no practical use.
"If we alter a dangerous virus so it can infect humans will that make it more dangerous to humans?"

erm of course gain of function has a practical use. it's how we pre-empt dangerous mutations in the wild, and how we peer into the working mechanisms of viruses and micro-organisms. it's 'reverse engineering' of microbiology.

the argument in support of GoF research has always been that it allows us to better develop vaccines or antivirals.

you really talk such utter fucking bollocks.
